**Current** Info Requested for One-way Travel from US to Colombia

I did the google search for applicable threads, but couldnt really find one which was current. Can i travel to Colombia and have no problems without having a return flight ticket already purchased, or will a one-way ticket suffice for entry purposes and remaing there on a Colombian business visa?

Thanks in advance for any useful information......=)

I have never had anyone ask for proof of a return ticket, but I would imagine this is because the issue would arise with the airline itself (and be a condition of selling the ticket) or with the DIAN form, if it is officially enforced. I think calling the airline and asking would be the best way to get current info on this.

The airlines are the ones called on to enforce it. You're not asked because they generally know you're on a RT. I've been asked numerous times and made to show an ongoing ticket.

Best way to get around it is buy a full-priced, fully refundable ticket on American from BOG to Miami. Show that when you check in to your OW into Colombia. Then get it refunded when you're in.

I called American Air like MT suggested, and they said i could not purchase a 1-way ticket from US to Bog. They did say i can project a return trip of a maximum of 330 days from departure date either online or through the Reservations line. But, when i knew the exact return flight date, i would have to pay the change fee ( /- $100 US?), of course!

However, i am not sure that AA offers these fully refundable flights. If it IS possible, I think i will do what Mr H suggests and go the fully refundable purchase price flight, then get a refund. By not being able to purchase a one-way ticket, the monkey wrench is once i am in Colombia, and i want a RT flight from Colombia to the US after that, i would either have to pay to change the initial flight when departing back to the US, and then pay for another RT ticket with a another project return date and change fee!!! Once settled in to CTG, i prefer to purchase RT tickets originating in Colombia, with the destination being the US, then use the same ticket to return to Colombia.

Thanks for your help, MT and Mr H!

Weird, I learned the refundable OW ticket trick from an AA counter agent who stopped me leaving the US for having a OW ticket only. Say you're buying 2 OW's because you want to leave out of LA but return to Miami or something.

ONE-WAY TICKETS FROM COLOMBIA:

I think I remember a note about this a few years back on pbh, but now it is getting closer in reality for me. Are ONE WAY tickets from Colombia to the USA easy to purchase? Are they available? Are they cheaper than the round-trip tickets? And, the question is in regards to The Novia/Fiance coming to the EEUU,... soon.

And, I remember someone telling me that the 'Fiances coming to EEUU' on that visa had to have a roundtrip ticket in her hand, 'jus in case it didn't work out'. But, I believe many of the posters at that time refuted that notion to be UNTRUE. AND, IN FACT... she/he can come with a ONE WAY TICKET in hand.

I just checked the AA website and they have the following fares available via the website which might do the Refund trick suggested by Mr H:

"Economy Class without Restrictions: The lowest refundable fare without purchase or stopover restrictions (for international fares). These fares do not have a fee for changes to the itinerary. Also included in this class are limited-inventory unrestricted economy fares that allow for travel in the next higher cabin offered."

Looks like if i get this, and even keep it, i dont get charged the change of itinerary fee. But, i think it would be better to just seek a refund of monies paid or a credit issued towards a future round trip ticket from Col to the US.......sounds like a plan!!!!!!!!!

I easily bought a one way ticket to Colombia with LAN. They are pretty much the cheapest from my research also, and a hell of a lot nicer than the AA planes I've been on.

They didnt care that I didnt have a copy of my return ticket both times I arrived in BOG.

I even got a tourist visa extension twice by saying I will buy the return ticket soon. I don´t think it's a big deal unless when you come into the country, you are nearing the end of your visa stay time.

Damn, i take that back.....A RT ticket non-refundable (economy class with restrictions) from US (CA) to Bogota is about $1,000 for departure in November and return in May 08. Same flight but the Economy Class without restrictions (refundable, and no change of itinerary fee) is F=ing $2,797 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! F-me!!!!!!!!! jajajjajaja.....i think i will just use my FF Aadvantage miles (30,000 miles needed) and it will only cost me the taxes of about $55 US..!!!!!!!!!!. Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DAS changed the requirement for obtaining visa extensions during the last year. I had the package of papers WITH the copy. DAS removed the ticket copy and said it wasn't required.

Based on the the quote above and my experience I'd say you don't need one but DAS can be strict, especially in Pereira.

PS: I think a round trip ticket might be about the same price. Saw info about the 199 special no problem throwing half of that ticket away.

GS, don't worry guy. A one way ticket for the post visa trip back to the US is fine. And it is easy to buy a one way from Colombia to the US. Honewever, in most cases it is cheaper to just buy a round trip ticket anyway - which makes the whole point moot. I easily bought a one way ticket from BOG to MIA on Avianca at a slightly cheaper price than a round trip ticket. But generally, a round trip ticket is cheaper ... just don't use the second half.

I just flew into Colombia on Avianca less than 2 weeks ago without a ticket back out. Of course my ticket was the return leg of a RT that I got with FF miles in April.

It is no problem to buy one-ways on Avianca. However, the airline usually asks about return flights.

You cannot get your first business VISA in Colombia. If you don't already have the VISA, you will have to leave the country to get it. There are some kinds of VISAs that you can apply for in Colombia like the student VISA. Of course you can renew any VISA in Colombia provided the VISA has not expired.

GS, LAN is Air Chile. What it stands for? I don't know? It's a great airline, free booze, newer planes, movies, even the stewardesses dress like the old Pan Am or TWA chicks from the '60s.

Cheapest way so far is an AA flight San Jose CA to Miami 1 way $200, then next day Avianca 1 way Miami-Bogota $221, then buy Avianca Airpass (4segment) $441 or (3 segment) $364.....4 segment includes a Bog-Mzl flight, Mzl-Ctg flight, and a RT Ctg-Valledupar flight......So, for $861 i can go from Calif to Bogota, and then visit Mzl, Ctg, and Valledupar (for the Vallenato Festival).....=)...i still need to look at Copaair.com...=)

I purchase one way tickets all the time because I never know when my chica would piss me off. I have been to Colombia about 10 times this year and never had a problem. You may want to check www.bookingwiz.com for the best prices.
