Crepes & Waffles and Single Mothers

I have heard that Crepes and Waffles ONLY employs single mothers. I am very inclined to belive this since everytime I go there, I have only seen women working.

Es verdad esto? Alguie puede confirmar este dato por favor?

Since the issue of single moms in Colombia seems to be coming up on the forum lately, I suggest rather than sit here cyber-blabbing about the misfortune of these girls with other foreigners (which won't change a thing because it is the Colombianos that are knocking the girls up)..... go have a waffle!!! Have a crepe!!! And tip the girl nicely!!!!

I recommend waffle de arequipe con helado. Que delicia.. and it might taste better knowing that you are supporting a chain with a humanitarian side.

Somebody call the CCLU. I hope not 'cause that would be discrimination on the basis of sex as well as marital and maternal status... (please don't say they're dark too)

True. The head of the company is a woman and contracts only women. In a recent article C&W was decorated in the human resources category. 'La Republica' states: ".. En el entorno empresarial pyme colombiano existen muchos ejemplos no difundidos de empresas como Crepes & Wafles que son conscientes de su aporte y responsabilidad con la sociedad, teniendo como política la contratación de mujeres cabezas de familia como parte de su personal .." Also on their website: http://www.crepesywaffles.com/html/corporativa/recurso_humano.php4 (one long URL!) Mmm, would like one... RIGHT NOW! (a crepe for the record).

I'm learning a lot today. Now that I think about it I have never seen a guy working at crepes and waffles.

I don't think you could discriminate like that in your hiring practices here in the states but it probably flys in Colombia. I was surprised when I was reading the employment classifieds in the El Pais on day and saw an ad were they wanted a young attractive secretary. It would be illegal to place an ad like that in the states.

Anyway thanks for the tip. I'll leave an extra tip the next time I eat at Crepes and Waffles and remember not to ask the waitress out.

Yes Its a very good program, for they not only hire "madres cabeza de familia" but they have helped them to be able to buy their own houses and with education programs for their children.

Remeber that " madres cabezas de famila" doesn't only mean single mothers, many were married and lost their husbands or partners to violence or displacement. The percentage of "Madres Cabezas de Familia" is overwhelming, many of them finding themselves with lots of children, no husband and no skills, because before the husband was the sole provider of income. AS you gringos know, average colombian women wants a husband que la mantenga, why do you think you find wives so easily...so the figure of a "Madre Cabeza de Familia" is a cultural shock and transformation of the past 15 years; and the change has been accelarated by the violence that has killed so many men.

When you leave a tip, does it actually go to the waitress, or is there a tip pool?

Just curious.

Their salries are more than minimum wage and they are super good emplyees... at least that's what i've heard. The story of the restaurant is very cool. It was their thesis project in university and then she set it up in a garage. The place was a normal garage'resturant and they were not doing to good. When they were about to shut down an old lady came in and had a crepe. She told the owner her crepes sucked and that she had a good recipe and gave her the recipe.
The owner says that this recipe changed her life. For many years she never saw the woman but always remembered her. Some years ago she met her in an airport. And finally thanked her.

For Elmo Have you tried "Frenos & Mofles"? I hear they hire only poor short indios like you. Of course, you have to eat a plate full of nuts and bolts every day.

I love Crepes & Waffles for this policy and because I actually like their food. Of course it wouldn't fly in the USA because there's laws against hiring discrimination, period, but I'm glad to see it in Colombia where there's a lot of discrimination in the workplace against women. As Isaac Newton once said, "Every action has an equal and opposition reaction..."

Opinionated and biased are two totally different things. You are making assumptions. I am entitled to my opinions and I feel that everybody else is entitled to theirs as well. I moderate another colombian forum frequented by many PBH'ers and, never banned any comments, not even those aimed at getting under my skin.

What you have is a personal dislike for me, a need to make silly and offensive remarks everytime I write something, it is like you can't find a way to get noticed without being nasty.

tips included in bill I wouldn´t always trust tips that are included on the bill. I have a number of friends that tell me where they work the staff do not get the included tip. For example Carnes y Carnes (or whatever its called) in Chia. A tip of around 10% is included on the bill but doesn´t go to your waitress who is earning minimum wage. Its goes to the restaurant. the thing that suxs about this is that most people think they don´t need to tip because they are already paying one.
