Credit Card Fraud ....follow up to previous thread

I first arrived in Colombia in 1999 and I have now lived here for the past four years. I thought I had learned most of the downfalls, the learning curve was steep at first, but for 2 years I had lived, crime free.Unfortunately there is always something lurking around the corner to learn anew.

Credit Card Fraud is worldwide, but I would like to pass on what happened to me, so as to raise awareness.

I am as careful as a Fox who has a Masters Degree in Carefulness. I use cash not cards for transactions generally, I take cash only from shopping malls cash machines to prevent cloning or theft.

Booking a flight from Cali to Bogota at Aviators in Cali centro I paid by credit card. This was a new card, never used it before and not used it since. The transaction was a paper one the old fashion way, never thought to much about it until i returned to find this card was on stop because a Company called Viajes Galleon de Medellin had managed to take out more than 40,000,000 pesos in 8 days.

Ok my card company reimbursed me the full amount after numerous telephone calls and faxes and I in turn have put pressure on Aviator to find the culprit.
My conclusion, if it is a paper transaction be very aware, even if it is a well know company.I had some luck ,as at least I knew the company whose employees had passed on my details.Whether they catch the person is a different matter.

I wouldn't waste my time...Credit Card reimburses fraudelent charges based on Mastercard/Visa Regulations and let them recover there funds which they will thru the banks they deposited those funds into that account...Credit Card is a business so let there fraud dept. do the work..that is the whole reason you have a credit card is having protection..I will not stop using my card because I don't have to carry large amounts of cash....Most vendors like that then don't have to worry about conterfeit Pesos/Dollars well established businesses that can absorb the merchant fees...

ATM Fraudelent withdrawals little bit more hassle but you will recover your funds after investigation Yes I do take precaution when I do my ATM withdrawals during the day at an established inside ATM with Security Cameras and Guard...Then the ATM Card stays in apartment but carry my Credit Card and Some Cash when roaming around..

Vicshere...If you read my email this is not a Bitch about Colombia, it was only a piece of advice and at the same time, you never know somebody might know of, or had dealings with Viajes Galleon Medellin. I am so sorry I do not know what a Troll is?.
You also seem very interested in my credentials , as a resident of Colombia and what I have being doing all those years!

I have spent over two years living in Buenaventura in Barrios llama Transformacion , Kennedy,Bolivar, working for two different charities. In that time I have had, some great experiences ,good ones, bad ones.It has been en lighting. I now live in Cali .Now I am in my house I have more time to explore the Internet. To be honest I never seen too many extranjeros in Buenaventura ,apart from the few that travelled there for curiosity or Internet girlfriends to pass on the information about this site.
I am sorry you think I have been waiting years for something bad to report. The good news is that I am going back to Buenaventura next month and I cordially invite you to come with me,where you can experience first hand what bad things can happen on a daily basis, I can guarantee your great experience in smelling TROLLS (whatever they are) will be of no use to you.

Morrongo, Thanks for the Info! I see nothing in your OP that disses Colombia either, just good general info that could be of use in ANY country. I imagine there are many who read PBH but don't bother posting, for whatever reason. A friend of mine in Bogota has read PBH for close to 6 years but does not post as of yet!

miamimike says on Aug 19, 2007, 05:53:

TRoll:In the context of internet culture, an internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who intentionally posts messages about sensitive topics constructed to cause controversy in an online community such as an online discussion forum or USENET groups in order to bait users into responding.[1] They may also plant images and data on networks that others may find disturbing in order to cause confrontation.

More specifically a troll is an insult or accusation made against a poster. It would be highly unusual for any internet poster to claim the title of troll[citation needed], rather a community member may try to deflate a post that is controversial or thought provoking by referring to it as a “troll. In usage troll is more of an insult like "jerk".

To call someone a troll is to say that any dispute over a post is not valid not because the issues raised are not valid, but to claim the intent of the poster invalidates the post. As a speech act the term troll is generally used as an ad hominem argument, attacking the poster rather than the content or issues of the post.

well humm lets look at the original post
1)he has lived 2 years crime free out of four....so some other crime or crimes has happen to him in the past 3 or 4 years...so OP why didn't you report to us these pit falls for to watch out for
2)he's says he used a new card never used before....a brand new card with 20,000$ credit limit woow not bad for a limit on a new card....and if its a Colombian card...with 40,000,000..even more wooow which bank are you using I need to know cause I want one of them to
3)he managed to take more than 40,000,000 in 8 days....don't know what company it was but which stupid company would allow charges of that kind of money in 8 days especially when charges are coming from Colombia...earlier this year I did a cash advance on my M/C (Canadian Card) here at my bank for 2,000,000....which is well under my limit....anyway I was given the money no problem....the next day my brother gets a message in Toronto from M/C....that there was unusual activity on my card in Colombia and they are sending a new cards to my mailing address....this is normal procedure for all credit card companies a human doesn't do this its a computer program that picks up on weird card movements......and if it was a Colombia credit card.....I don't know their procedures but I doubt very much they would allow that kind of movement on a card
so again I ask what's wrong with this picture

It wasn't my intention of entering into a debate over my posting, but have pleasure in en lighting you again vicshere.
1. yes i have been subjected to crime here, Peru , Ecuador and like I ve said before, if you are not a member or do not know about the site it is a bit difficult to post. I hope you now understand this point!
2. The card was new yes, but the company I was with merged with CITI bank, my credit stayed the same just a new card and number was given.
3. Here at last we can agree, this was my point , why did the Company let these withdrawals go through and for so much, be allowed before it was flagged? On many occasions different cards of mine have been flagged on cash withdrawals and the company have phoned me to check these were genuine(yes they always phone me) , so i was surprised at the amount of the fraud, their explication was the change over of companies but vicshere you are right they were stupid ,fortunately they paid for their mistake.
No it was not a Colombia credit card,I do not use banks here if I can help it, for the many reasons that have been already posted on this site,if it was a Colombia card I do not believe the fraud would be been so great. That's why I posted ,because was obvious that my card being foreign was singled out for this fraud.
Vicshere there is nothing wrong with this picture, its just your glasses,I thank miamimike for his definition of a TROLL and can say quite openly now, that if you are the troll police you might think of a career change. You are wrong to challenge my motives..on saying that ....all the best and take care
if it will make you sleep better at night I can email the fraud sheet with the transcations with pleasure, direct to you for your troll investigations!

The worst part of credit card fraud is that it really can't be stopped and it's a pain in the culo. Not many people might know this but if you have an American credit card and it's stolen overseas, expect lots of paperwork for the next year or so. If the theif knows what they are doing, there's no way to stop use of the credit card if they keep all transactions under $100 usd. My sister had her card stolen in Barcelona 2 years ago and is still receiving fraudulant statements even though the card has been closed for 2 years. They keep charging about 80-90 usd on the card and there's no way for the merchant to know it's a bad card because it doesn't receive an authorization overseas for under $100. My sister has not had any problems with the credit card company, but once a month she has to fill out a new fraud claim form. The credit card company said it will keep happening until the expiration date on the card.

Hey brad216, I was serious about www.lifelock.com.
I'm not sure if it protects against the case if your cr cards are stolen, but it IS AGAINST... Identity Theft. Which somehow, I'm thinking go hand-in-hand and are 'integrally' connected.
Look into it.
If this company were publicly traded (I'm not sure yet, if it is or not), I'd put 'all my eggs in that basket'.

That can't be true I go to a restaurant in Colombia or Exito and charge that day and go home and go on the computer I can see the pending authorizations already the same day reducing my credit line or account balance..There pending auth's but they hit the card already...and will post in about two days... The charges your talking about are merchants that still do not call in an auth or get an pos auth.. and just submit the paperwork to there local bank..so they can get an authorization..Something is wrong there...if the local bank cannot get an authorization they will deposit the funds in the merchants account..so your credit card bank because your account is closed cannot give an auth.. Something is wrong there...I had my Amex stolen..and they were trying to hit the card for about two months Amex told me..but of course Amex would not give the local merchant any funds nor an authorization.....

Something is wrong..I would definitely talk to the Credit Card Bank Manager or an attorney to write the Credit Card bank a letter...There are Visa/Mastercard International Regulations on Fraud...you can call them too...they have reps..
