Court: Colombia responsible for reporter's death

BOGOTA (AP) — A Colombian court says soldiers were responsible for the 1991 shooting death of a journalist and is ordering the government to pay damages to his family.

Henry Rojas was a correspondent for the Bogota newspaper El Tiempo. He was killed in the northeastern city of Arauca after reporting on alleged corruption in the mayor's office and the military.

The 27-judge Council of State has ordered the government to indemnify his family in the amount of $380,000.

The judges made their ruling Feb. 26, but it wasn't publicized until Wednesday.

Colombia has seen a drop recently in the number of reporters murdered, but the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists says self-censorship has made them less of a target.

1991 it could have been anyone,, that was the era of Pablo Escobar. Take a bribe or take a bullet.

This kind of monetary recompense will become more common.

Sadly,, the exact same thing happened in the U.S. during the last 40 years and who pays? THE CITIZENS pay and it is one reason why living in the U.S. is expensive,, Taxes on income and property. Insurance requirements have forced doctors to be employees of corporations. The list is endless.

I watched this happen of the last 50 years and knew there would be a cost to pay. Gezzz, started with 8 Million payment for spilled coffee at McDonalds, like winning the lottery.

Colombian Chickens are crowing about the new President of the U.S. who will assure that From each according to their ability to each according to their need.

$380,000? is that USD or COP? one is like hitting the lottery as well, and the other is a cheap price for a reporter!

Miguel
That sounds about right price for a reporter!

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."
