Corruption Survey

Corruption Survey

A post on this site about corruption in Colombia got me thinking. Corruption is basically a subjective thing and subject to individual thought. What might be interesting is to see opinions of how corrupt you believe different persons and institutions to be. Follow is a list of different people and different groups, please rate them of your opinion for how corrupt they are. Criteria used for calculation of corruption are entirely up to you. The scale is from one to ten. One is the least corrupt and ten is the most corrupt.

As a little extra definition it might be nice to get an idea of your profile. So there are a few questions about you.

To some extent members of a blog site are anonymous, but some of you are known a little. I realize that some individuals might not want to be identified, therefore feel free to send your responses to my private Email. Now that I think of it, I will also give this survey to some friends here. Expect results in a couple weeks.

Do you live in Colombia or outside Colombia?

Are you Colombian by birth or another nationality?

Politicians get AT LEAST a 5 on the scale just for being a politician. They wouldn't be where they are today if they weren't partially corrupt.

Hmm - good idea Good idea to make it easier for everyone.
One possible way is to cut the post, paste it to Word and answer that way.

Excel file would be nice for quick calculations, but does anyone know how to attach an excel file to a post?

May I suggest You create a survey using surveymonkey.com and post a link? That way the results are compiled for you. And it should be free if less than 10 question or less than 100 respondents.

missing some Scotty - you mention the Clinton's but not the Bushs interesting.

And I think you forgot Banks. Early in his life my father helped start a bank and served on its board of directors for many years. About the 5th year into it he said to me, "A bank is nothing more than a license to steal." And this was a bank in the USA.

scotty says on Feb 27, 2007, 08:23:

JM Funny you mention banks, i was going to put banks in my list but i sorta felt that they fell in line with credit card companies. What i should have said instead was lending/financial institutions, that way i could have covered( banks, loan companies and credit cards).

As for Bush Im not really sure if Bush can fall into the corrupt catagory, i put Bush more into the (I make lots of mistakes catagory). I think of Bush as a person who is trying to protect America and our allies and he realizes the very dangerous threat we have from radical islam, so i give him credit for that. What i don't like about him is that he seems to make some blunders that puts us into odd and difficult situations. However, i don't think his blunders make him corrupt.
As for the Clintons, i don't think anyone in America is more corrupt than the Clintons. Even that big time Clinton supporter, friend and money contributer in California made a statement this past week that the Clintons are the best liars in politics, he said that they lie with such ease. words from a long time friend that knows them.

Hey Scotty, While Corruption may not be unheard of In The Clinton family, the Bush Family is far from being Lily pure and un-corruptible. Since you bring up the Clinton Subject, lets fairly examine both sides of the equation! A couple known Bush&Co dirty deals that spring to mind is when Brother Neil bankrupted Silverado Savings and Loan in 1988 and stuck the Taxpayers with a One Billion dollar bailout! He(Neil) became the Poster Boy for S&L Corruption back in that Era! Anything in the Clinton's Business Dealings verifiably have done that even approach this Level ? Or how about Neil's present Company called Ignite-Inc, that Brother Jeb awarded a Non-compete Contract to here in Florida for the FCAT(high school testing in florida public schools)Testing software? Non-compete contract with Florida Taxpayer's public funds???

Survey Update:
Ok, we have only had ten percent of the allowable responses so far on the suvey.
Briefly how it is going:
Bush is considered more corrupt than Uribe.
Of the Current and Past Presidents listed, Margart Thather is considered by far the least corrupt.
People seem to either love or hate Enrique Penalosa, no middle ground there.
Mockus is by far considered the least corrupt of all mayors even the US mayors.
US Vice president Cheney seems only a slim amount behind André Pastrana as the most corrupt politician listed
The Colombian DAS, police and military are doing much worse than their American counterparts
And ouch on pueblo alcaldes – very few people seem to have faith in their honesty.
FARC, ELN and AUC are running neck and neck for who is the worse.

When we close this survey I will give the actual numbers. In the meantime, there is room for more responses so tell your friends of the site address. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=143123382287

miami First i was under the impression that those dealings back in the 80's involved alot of people? but wasnt it----gee whats his name the big savings and loan guy? i thought he was the big cheese in all that goings on, i was under the impression that neil was a small fish? i think even Mc cain was involved in that somehow.
Either way that has nothing to do with the president George Bush, he wasnt involved in any of that.

As for the Clintons, you seem to have forgotton about their big land deal in Arkansas. you also seem to have forgotton about Hilery's big futures market deal, where she got some inside info and made a chunk of money.
Let us not forget all of Bills women and one that said he raped her, then all the sudden the IRS starts visiting these ladies that came forward with their stories. Corrupt, the Clintons? absolutely! the thought of Hilery back in the White House with slick Willy at her side scares the hell out of me.
you want to see corrupt, just wait until they are back in the White House.

Perhaps next survey Scotty - don't kill the messenger here. I am only reporting the numbers. Those other guys you mentioned were not listed on the survey. But perhaps we will do another survey listing just the current world leaders. That might be interesting.

Scotty stated, "this survey is nothing but a Bush/America bash session"

Again I refer to the fact that I am only reporting the numbers and must admit that so far the results have even surprised me to some extent. Obviously we will know more when finished. But remember, all of this is subjective and most likely statistically insignificant.

Survey update March 1, 2007 Survey Update Morning of March 1, 2007

We have doubled our respondents from yesterday.
Vice President Cheney increases his lead as being considered the most corrupt of the national politicians
Winston Churchill has overtaken Margaret Thatcher for the least corrupt politician
And Uribe is considered slightly less corrupt than George W. Bush

Of the past presidents, Pastrana still maintains a commanding lead in the wrong direction.

Large city mayors past and present are within hundredths of a point of each other except for Mockus. He is starting to look like the poster child for honesty.

Very interesting in that the new Colombian foreign minister is considered more corrupt than the past foreign minister whose brother and father have been implicated as working with the paramilitary. Perhaps Uribe should have done a little homework before giving Fernando Araujo the nod for the job.

Small town mayors in Colombia even surpass Vice President Cheney in consideration of corruption. In fact they are second only to what are considered the terrorist forces (FARC, ELN & AUC) in Colombia. Speaking of the FARC, ELN and AUC, each of the three groups received at least one vote for being totally uncorrupt.

As for the average citizens of the countries, well they are all neck and neck.

There is room in the survey still for more people. Please tell your friends and relatives to participate.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=143123382287
When finished (I figure about 2 weeks) I will give all the numbers.
A big thank you to everyone now who has participated so far.

March 2 update Survey Update March 2

People continue taking the survey. Pretty much everything stays the same as stated above, except for U.S. Vice President Cheney. His lead as the most corrupt politician is growing. He now surpasses pueblo mayors in Colombia and has entered into an average score up there with the FARC, ELN and AUC.

For those who have not taken the survey, it is located at:

Mr. Hollywood says on Mar 2, 2007, 10:05:

Statistics One thing I've always found interesting when I did these kind of surveys is that once you get past about 10-15 participants the actual percentages vary little. It's actually fascinating that between, say, 10 participants and 150, the results seem consistant. I used to be much more skeptical of these small-sample polls like you see during election season, but I've begun to see some logic to it.

JMCana says on Mar 2, 2007, 10:10:

Yes, Mr. Hollywood, I have to agree to a point and therefore would never call this statistically significant. However, it is interesting and has already revealed some things I would not have thought of and opened up avenues to explore more in depth.

Will release the details when all is done. And look forward to much more participation.

Thank you for your participation.

Mr. Hollywood says on Mar 2, 2007, 12:35:

I'd beg to differ that it actually shows that a small sample is statistically significant.

Of course, the key to any survey is how you draft the questions. The simple phrasing of a question can push or pull the answer a long way toward a desired answer.

So on that front I don't particularly trust surveys.

Update March 7 Corruption Update:
With about a week to go until closing there have been some changes in the survey results.
Mockus has taken over as being considered the least corrupt of the politicians. The next least corrupt places are all held by British PM or past PM.

So, would Mockus make a good President for Colombia?

While many probably thought that a Colombian might take the top position for being considered the most corrupt politician that is not the case. Cheney just keeps increasing his lead with each new survey taker.

The citizens of each country are considered less corrupt than the politicians of the country, EXCEPT in England.

The Colombian National police are considered more corrupt than the Colombian military. The mayors of small Colombian towns have edged up and are approaching the average of the terrorists groups.
