I´m sitting in an internet cafe in my home village. Outside it´s 30o C and the sweat is trickling down my back. I´ve got a view of the village square, sun baked stone seeking shelter beneath overhanging trees. Nearby there´s the river and a Mountain backdrop covers the sky, shimmering in the heat. The air is that unmistakable smell, of which I can only describe as a weird combination of dust, manure, chickens, passion fruit, woodsmoke and roast meat. Sounds disgusting when I write it like that, yet I can´t get enough of it.

It´s beautiful.

I´m happy. Content.

I know this isn´t my birthplace and I will always be an Englishman, but there is part of my soul which yearns for this, which aches when I´m not here. A part of me belongs here always and now that I´m back, I´m truly relaxed.

oh, are there two of you? Cockney, I know the feeling even if I wasn't born in Colombia. Every time I'm in Cali the sounds, the smells, the sights just invade my senses and everything feels so right again. It's like I never went away in the first place.

wait a minute...this is serious... Which of you guys are waring, uh, pardon me, debating me all the time? First of all, one of you may not like this, but whoever decided to be the copycat didn't make such a smart decision, because I, like Desi points out above, did not even know there were 2 of you guys. that really is not of any benefit to either of you guys. There is sure to be confusion and sometimes, it is not going to be nice. Logic clearly dictates that the later Cockney (most recent arrival, change his name or at least, add some numbers.....

Two of Us I´m the original Cockney Colombian and have been a member of this website longer, though I am a less frequent poster than lowercase underscore cockney_colombian (And as I´ve not been online for three weeks on account of enjoying Colombia I´ve not been debating anybody bar mi Abuela who insists I eat rice)

I´ve had the name for about 18 months now, first used it when I opened my photo blog. I admit I was a bit miffed when I saw another Cockney but didn´t say owt as when I thought of the name as being a stroke of genuis (I´m half Colombian, I was born in East London!) no doubt the other Cockney thought the same!

Gomezman5 says on Aug 7, 2005, 13:43:

I thought you were the original (Cockeny Colombian) My point is that people never remember their friends, allies or postive contributions, but get under someone's skin just one time, and you get maligned and "talked down to" repeatedly. I just think you have the potential to be the target of someone else's wrath because of any resentment someone may have against the other guy. At the same time, he may get the credit for your contributions. It just makes no sense. It's hard enough to remember who says what in any given thread, the virtual copying of someone elses name is SURE to creat confusion, no matter where you pu the - or the _. Case closed

I'm the one who ripped off the handle (mind you I was blisfully ignorant at the time-either that or I was high).
There's no comparison between myself and my namesake on this site. It's like comparing Caviar (my namesake) to cod's roe (me).
Gman it's me that keeps having a run in with you...mind you I know you already started ignoring me a while back already. I will be changing my nick, I tend to come rushing in where angels fear to tread and that might lead to the original Cockney being thought of rather badly...as well as the posibilty of me taking the credit for the original cockney#s superlative word juxtoposition (i'm a nasty piece of work but taking the credit for this guy's amazing posts won't reat easily with me)
expect to see Quindioman make his debut very soon

Quindiioman.....ignoring you? me? no sir you are factually wrong Look and congraduds on the clarification. I igonre nobody. A run in today, is history no later than the next time I log into the site. Anyone on this site can substantiate this. In fact, the people I have had the most wars with, I am probably the most friendly with and my email box, (not here,,,my regular email) is filled with communications with these people. There is only one major exception, and that is a person that I had a dispute with 2 months ago, and then he decided to drop out of nowhere the other day to go full throttle and attack my credibility. I still can't believe someone could hold a gurdge for so long. You would think I stole money from the guy.

No sir...people will disagree, always, and people have the right to do so, but in the interest of harmony between and among all, we should work to get along ---personally that is.

One more point that is indisputable, if I ignore, than I would not get the chance to debate you or vice versa ...No?

Sonny says on Aug 8, 2005, 11:53:

What I learned about I'm from Dallas. Not a cowboy fan just from Dallas. My first non professional trip to Cali was an eye opener for me. I remember going with my fiance and her family to a funeral of a dear friend. As I walked up to the family, not knowing them nor them knowing me, they all came to me to greet me with open arms and all told me welcome to Cali and they were happy for me and my fiance. What a difference. Someone (many) took the time to stop at a moment that was so sad just to make me feel welcome. That evening we went up to San Antonio. As I sat there looking over the city from a very beautiful and old church I could not help but to think that life does not have to be so busy. I actually listened to the sounds of children playing. Families being just that. FAMILIES. Laughing and playing and the music!!!! The music was wonderful. Full of life and happyness. It made your feet move and your heart feel happy knowing that there is peace in the world and that things can be simple and wonderful. It was like that for me as a kid but as time takes over you forget the simple things of life. The street venders, the sounds of horses and cars, and the busses blowing smoke as then screamed by almost stopping to let you get on of off. :-)
Flowers on the corners, Taxi's that did not cost $1.75 for the first 1/4 minute and $1.00 for each second and fourth 1/2 minutes. You get my point I am sure.
What I learned most on my first trip is that MY life would never be the same again. I long for my trips to Cali to visit her family which is now my family. I did not need a back ground check, have my drivers license pulled, or finger printed to be accepted into a close and loving family. I learned something new. It was called love unconditional. For those of you that have never been to Colombia (Cali) pack your bags, get your passport and get on a plane. You will never be the same again. The people for the most part are caring and polite and accepting. As for me I did not take someone from a hard life in Colombia to make her life better I am bringing her to my world to make My world a better place and to have the best of both countries in one "Not" so happy city known as Dallas.Retirement??? You bet but in Cali. Just my opinion is all.

Cockney Colombian says on Aug 26, 2005, 09:33:

A Life in the Day Of Life here is great. I really love the concept of siestas. That´s just me all over. The pace of life in this sleepy little village, nestled in the mountains is just tranqulity in an eternity glass.

I get up early that´s true, usually seven am, but one doesn´t complain as I start the day with fresh fruit juice. A freezing cold shower to brace myself for the 32 degree day ahead, and a hearty breakfast; a hot salty soup called caldo, left over meat from the night before with Spanish omlette, arrepas, which are like corn pancakes and embuelto (sp?) which is like banana flavoured corn.

The villa is outside the village, about ten minutes walk up the mountains. I sit out on the veranda taking in the view, brown and blue mountains shimmering in the morning heat.

I read or write or play solitaire after the morning chores. The house needs to be swept daily, an unwinnable battle against the ever present dust. But I take my shirt off when I sweep the central courtyard and I´ve bronzed up nicely. Not that I do that sort of thing of course.

And then there is a hearty lunch, more soup, a thicker one full of meat and potatoes, and there is steak for lunch, a fresh fruit juice, a black coffee and sweet bread.

Then in the early hours of the afternoon we wonder down to the village to see the relatives. A communal siesta, rocking chairs dragged out the house and set up in the street, the whole neighbourhood in slumber, the dogs dozing in our shadows, horses subdued in the shade of the trees. Even the chickens seem to doze for a while.

Then its off to the river and a swim in that fresh mountain water. So cold against the burning sun and so freshing. Sitting on the rocks as the current threatens to drag you off to the Pacific.

Fizzy drinks for deserts and then back up to the villa before dusk. Watch the sky turn a glorious purple before melting into a inky black sky chocked full of stars.

An evening meal improvised with whatevers at hand, topped off with endless cups of coffee, sitting on the veranda in the cooler evening breeze, talk of everything and nothing, monolouges of nostalgia.

I don´t want to leave.

It is doubtful few are positioned to experience rural Colombian life and fewer yet have the opportunity or ability to describe it so eloquently.

It was purple - not necessary to be poetic about it Observing spectacular sunsets in a rural area is not an everyday occurrence. Especially purple ones with a tinge of red.

Nightfall is different. The sky, air and environment outside the cities are brilliantly clear and fresh.

The late afternoon distant hills are always a sight worth seeing while the are slowly veiled in an inky cloak of darkness.

High mountainsides thought devoid of human life show the reality of rural life as hundreds of dots of light suddenly wink on and twinkle in syncopation to the movement of unseen tree limbs blown by cool a mountain breeze.

The fine detail and absolute clarity of this sight is difficult to photograph.
