In public facilities, I vaguely remember seeing the little wastebaskets. But the worst of all for me is trying to remember to get a sufficient cuantity of paper from the single dispenser in the mensroom at El Dorado Airport. Live simply... Love generously... SUERTE GRINGO says on Jul 27, 2008, 13:16: I have flushed everything down the toilet in many a bathroom in Colombia be it friends home, hotel, apartmento, restaurante, and servicios located in the mall and have not had a problem with the toilet overflowing, In fact, I was surprised by the hard flush in several toilets located in apartamentos and hotels in Colombia. I always carry my own toilet paper wherever I go because you can not find toilet paper in many public bathrooms.

ColombianoGringo (Moderator) says on Jul 27, 2008, 13:23: This applies in some homes that have old or inferior plumbing. Bill Turley (Moderator) says on Jul 27, 2008, 15:12: Where I live, we have a septic tank. The bacteria in the septic system can't eliminate the cellulose in the TP so we ask our guests to please use the basket. The structure of the toilets in many public places do not have the capability of having seats attached they are also made with a wide lip to serve the purpose Mr. Bill Somondoco 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Tinto (Moderator) says on Jul 27, 2008, 20:43: Bill Turley - You bring up an interesting point about septic tank systems. There have to be millions of them in the US and to my knowledge, people that have them don't put used toilet paper in the wastebasket. I grew up on a farm with a septic tank system (it's still in use) and we'd flush away just like someone hooked into a city's central sewer system. Is there something different about the septic tank systems in Colombia? I wanted access to health care, housing and education, but, no, I get potholes, trash and silicone tits instead. -Desi. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Tinto (Moderator) says on Jul 28, 2008, 05:46: Here's a thought: Maybe old habits die hard. A while ago I came across a World Bank or International Monetary Fund link that said the first sewage treatment plant in Bogota didn't begin operation until 1990 or maybe even later in the decade. That shocked me. If it's accurate, raw sewage from a couple of million households was being dumped into the rivers until fairly recently. It could be that even today, outside of the largest cities, there is not very much in the way of sewage treatment plants. I wanted access to health care, housing and education, but, no, I get potholes, trash and silicone tits instead. -Desi. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

pavo says on Jul 28, 2008, 06:06: It's kind like a dog pissing on the trees. In Colombia, you mark your territory in the bathroom. Up turned toilet paper with as much crap on it as possible is always a good way to leave your mark. Others will go for the non flush and upturned TP marking. Beware if you come across the mythical crester. This is a nonflush marking that actually starts with a strong base and ends up with a pointed crest emerging out of the water.

Bill Turley (Moderator) says on Jul 29, 2008, 07:53: A comment about Septic systems. In the US it is no problem because once every 4 or 5 years a truck will come by to pump out the septic tank. I have not seen these trucks in Colombia. I did use that service in Upstate NY where I had a farm. Here I have a large leech bed ( bigger than in the US) and even with lots of visitors no problems but I DO have a waste basket in the BR with a Sign not to flush the paper Mr. Bill Somondoco 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

chewy says on Jul 29, 2008, 09:59: A 1000 gals tank with a leach field should last 5-7 years for a family of 4-6 easily. Some let it go twice that much. Bill Turley, I also lived for 32 years in upstate NY in a farm (Truxton just south of Syracuse), and I made my own septic system. In Turbaco the farm I purchased has a septic tank under the house. If something ever happens I will have to break the floor inside. The seller told me they do it that way to save on concrete. The toilet is the only one that goes to the septic. The rest of which is liquid goes to a pipe that goes to the trees outside to recycle the water. I will be building a new house there next to the other one but I am building my septic system the same was as I did in NY with its required leach field. Done the right way and the 3000 gal septic will be the same with a lid so I can access it when ever is needed. I will flush my papers also.
