As Gator said it's standard operating procedure in every Colombian home that I have ever had the need to use the bathroom. In public facilities, I vaguely remember seeing the little wastebaskets. But the worst of all for me is trying to remember to get a sufficient cuantity of paper from the single dispenser in the mensroom at El Dorado Airport.

I have flushed everything down the toilet in many a bathroom in Colombia be it friends home, hotel, apartmento, restaurante, and servicios located in the mall and have not had a problem with the toilet overflowing, In fact, I was surprised by the hard flush in several toilets located in apartamentos and hotels in Colombia. I always carry my own toilet paper wherever I go because you can not find toilet paper in many public bathrooms.

ColombianoGringo (Moderator) says on Jul 27, 2008, 13:23:

This applies in some homes that have old or inferior plumbing. However, in any home or apartment with reasonably decent plumbing, you should be able to flush toilet paper.

However, it is a good idea to do a "courtesy flush" before you throw the TP in. Also, don't throw in a ton of paper at a time. If you need to use a lot, then do an intermediate flush. The extra flushes may be inconvenient, but keeping soiled toilet paper in a wastebasket is just revolting.

NO ONE in my family anywhere in Colombia has that disgusting and unhygienic practice.

Where I live, we have a septic tank. The bacteria in the septic system can't eliminate the cellulose in the TP so we ask our guests to please use the basket. The structure of the toilets in many public places do not have the capability of having seats attached they are also made with a wide lip to serve the purpose

Well, if your plumbing can't handle it, then it doesn't leave you much choice. This is understandable in rural or older areas.

I am referring to situations with relatively modern plumbing were people insist on using the wastebasket out of habit when it isn't really necessary. Keep in mind that this wasn't a problem in Chapinero Alto when I was a kid in the 70s so I'm not just talking new buildings in Rosales. You simply learn to be careful with what you flush.

My wife's family in Southern Colombia keeps a big bucket in the bathroom. If you mess up and use too much TP and clog up the john, you fill up the bucket in the sink and pour the water in the toilet. This fixes it right up. Of course the reason I know this is that I once messed up and used too much TP.

Bill Turley - You bring up an interesting point about septic tank systems. There have to be millions of them in the US and to my knowledge, people that have them don't put used toilet paper in the wastebasket. I grew up on a farm with a septic tank system (it's still in use) and we'd flush away just like someone hooked into a city's central sewer system. Is there something different about the septic tank systems in Colombia?

Here's a thought: Maybe old habits die hard. A while ago I came across a World Bank or International Monetary Fund link that said the first sewage treatment plant in Bogota didn't begin operation until 1990 or maybe even later in the decade. That shocked me. If it's accurate, raw sewage from a couple of million households was being dumped into the rivers until fairly recently. It could be that even today, outside of the largest cities, there is not very much in the way of sewage treatment plants.

Update: The Wiki article looks to be fairly thorough and has a lot of references. The IFC/World Bank article says 84% of Barranquilla is connected to a sewer but only one district has sewage treatment plants. The other sewer districts dump right back into the Magdalena or the coast.

From the Wiki article: Wastewater treatment. In 2006, 25% of the wastewater generated in the country underwent some kind of treatment.[6] The remaining 75% is discharged without any treatment, contaminating a significant part of the natural water resources.

======================

Other deep thoughts for the day:

- Depending on where they stay, most visitors to Colombia are contaminating the rivers and oceans, too.

- The Magdalena is the drainage basin for the majority of the country's population. You probably don't want to swim or fish anywhere near its outlet on the North coast.

It's kind like a dog pissing on the trees. In Colombia, you mark your territory in the bathroom. Up turned toilet paper with as much crap on it as possible is always a good way to leave your mark. Others will go for the non flush and upturned TP marking. Beware if you come across the mythical crester. This is a nonflush marking that actually starts with a strong base and ends up with a pointed crest emerging out of the water.

A 1000 gals tank with a leach field should last 5-7 years for a family of 4-6 easily. Some let it go twice that much. Bill Turley, I also lived for 32 years in upstate NY in a farm (Truxton just south of Syracuse), and I made my own septic system. In Turbaco the farm I purchased has a septic tank under the house. If something ever happens I will have to break the floor inside. The seller told me they do it that way to save on concrete. The toilet is the only one that goes to the septic. The rest of which is liquid goes to a pipe that goes to the trees outside to recycle the water. I will be building a new house there next to the other one but I am building my septic system the same was as I did in NY with its required leach field. Done the right way and the 3000 gal septic will be the same with a lid so I can access it when ever is needed. I will flush my papers also.

While elsewhere, they will adapt to the more tolerable "in the toilet" method.

And to clarify, I certainly do not make habit of such waste-paper disposal practices. Only whilst in Colombia, and even then I find it difficult!

Yes,, and this has been discussed before but I haven't seen anyone guess the reason,, not in detail,, conjecture only. With as much shit as I see on this board you'd think someone could come up with a logical reason.

The problem is NOT the tube size,, well,, maybe 10% ??? of older homes. The tube in a rural area is,,, 4" minimum,, however the city now (for how long???) requires a 6" tube from the House to the main sewer. Every construction site I've looked at has a sewer box at the house. This box can have a 4" main line coming into it from the house BUT leaving this box and going to the main line is required to be 6" in diameter.

I'd guess every city has a requirement that can be different but I'd say that if a rural area has this requirement,, then cities should be somewhat similar.

Now,, there is a reason for the paper disposal being a trash can,, wipe your ass and put the crap covered paper into the can,, that's the norm and most larger facilities like home center, exito etc. will have a sign that say to put the toilet paper in the trash can and NOT flush it.

I have a pretty good idea why it is advisable to put the toilet paper in the trash basket,,, anyone care to guess ?

Poco: I have a "waste" basket (for trash, like kleenex, Q, tips, soap wrappers, not poo poo paper!) in my bath room here in USA, everybody does. Who says those "cestas de basura" are to put your used TP?. They look like something you would use for your kitchen!
IN THE CITIES YOU DO FLASH YOUR TOILET PAPER!!!!!. I HAVE NEVER, BEEN TO A HOME IN MEDELLIN, CALI OR BOGOTA, THAT YOU PUT DIRTY TP IN A BASKET!!!!!!!!!!

I don`t know my sh.. it is just I want to clear that out!

More help,,, Lisa,, these signs were INSIDE the MENS ROOM stall !!!!

Now that I think of it,, heck, maybe there are a LOT of MEN putting Q-tips, kleenex, and soap wrappers in the Mens room crapper ???

Heck,, now that you mention it,, maybe there are some men putting kleenex soiled with eye makeup in the crapper,, enough so they need to make a sign !!!!

I'm with Lisa. I've NEVER BEEN at a home in Cali, Bogotá, anywhere in Colombia that you don't flush the tp. Perhaps on the coast, B/quilla or Sta Marta?
I have a trash bin in my bathroom in Sweden too. It sure isn't for toilet paper.

Billyb Quote: I know that in the cities you put the T.P IN the toilet, if you are in the countryside or in fincas, and I guess in low stratus homes you put in the basket.

That wasn't my quote Poco. This was my quote:
"I'm with ya Lisa. I've never seen it in the cities (not to say that it doesn't occur in some neighborhoods), but in some remote farms, yes. BTW, I tried to keep them in line while you were gone Kat."

but that's ok, like you said,"the ignorance abounds on PBH........

"All I want to know is where I'm going to die, so I never go there" Unkown (at least to me) wise man.
