combat food. . . how to eat real good witouth spending money in fancy restaurants. . . with subtitles in spanish.

This is my top five of good restaurants. I called "combat food" becouse is for broken economies (as mine). I live in bogotá in the downtown, (7 years) the middle-class chapinero (10 years), the north, (10 years). I have a lot of friends living deep south. . . so, here is a few restaurants, they are quite good, not just becouse the food, becouse they represent some of the most interesting flavors in colombia. (And believe me, they are not ALL IN WHITE, WITH SQUARE DISHES, PRETENDING TO BE A RESTAURANT IN NY. . . so i suggest if you want to go to enjoy this, just a pair of sneakers, a few pesos, and complete the travel taking transmilenio. Tha landscape will pay the price)

North:
* El kiosko
(take 140 street, go to el "carulla 24" hours, take north. three blocks away. There you can buy "bogotá stuff" like empanadas, corazoncitos, masato. . . and true bogotá snacks. ALL HOME MADE AND FRESH. . . Try el AJI. . . just delicious.)

* Postres & mas postres
(take 134 street, pass the nine avenue, continue till you see a red light, then one block away in the same direction. Desserts, like tiramisu, and cakes.)

Downtown:
* La puerta falsa
(take seven avenue (la séptima), go to the museum "el florero de llorente" or "20 of july museum", then go east one block. You can see a green door. Thats it. The "cocadas de miel" and the chocolate with cheese, are superb. Still, try the calentanos (bogotanian bread) and of course el "tamal santafereño" you just can get enough)

cafeteria la romana
(take transmilenio, till "Museo de oro" station. Just in front you will see it. Back in the 50´s that use to be the place for meetings. Good coffee. Thou it´s a little bit expensive. Nice place.)

cafeteria La florida
(seven avenue with 23 street. You can´t missed it. They serve you hot chocolate and arepas de choclo, like nobody else.)

South
* El capitolio No. 2
(take PUENTE ARANDA avenue, then go to 13 street. You will see a Michelin´s advertising billiboard. Stop. Take to the north for the narrow street one block and there you go. You will find "atado de carne salvaje" (meat from rabbits, curies, chigüiro, and mostly any wild animal here in colombia) CH VITAMIN ( A local joke about: CHorizo, CHIcha, FRitanga, Jeta, Pelanga) If you were in brazil, think on a "big feijoada". . . very well prepared. Try the soups, "mazamorra chiquita" and "peto" (The peto is a sweet soup, made of corn and panela). The name "el capitolio" (the capitol) comes becouse much of our senators come to eat there. It´s not a big honor, but hey, this about food not politics.)

If you wanna eat nice and have a few pesos, i recomend it. This is not going to appear as "tourist places", (like casa vieja, or las acacias) this are restaurants for the normal people, but the flavors you will find its what colombia taste like,

But if you wanna get real good'Old school "CHICHARRON" . . . take north from la séptima avenida (seventh avenue) and 10 minutes after babilonia (a well known motel) you will see one of my favorites "la ternera de luis". . . the best meat ever. With corn, and "tuberia negra" or as we know here in bogotá. . . "rellena". This restaurant only opens on holidays. So keep that in mind If you planing to go. And when you camo back, came to "endulza tu paseo" a little shop of desserts.
