Columbian guerillas vent anger on French hostage as Sarkozy swears he will rescue her himself

After reading the article below, I find myself asking, "what does the FARC go from here?"

What new demands have FARC made after releasing both sets of hostages? Also like to suggest Daily Mail UK get a new editor who spells Colombia consistantly :O)
---------------------------------------

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said today he was ready to go in person to the Venezuela-Colombia border to collect ailing hostage Ingrid Betancourt, being held there by FARC guerillas.

Other hostages released by the Columbian rebel group yesterday said their captors had vented their anger on the French-Columbian politician, who they said is "very sick" and was being kept in inhumane conditions in the secret jungle camps. Ms Betancourt's daughter also appealed for her release, fearing her mother may die in captivity.

"I appeal to FARC to release her immediately. It's a matter of life and death, a matter of a humanitarian emergency," Mr Sarkozy told a news conference in Cape Town after arriving for a visit to South Africa.

Betancourt has duel French-Colombian nationality. She has been held hostage for six years. The guerillas have recently released other high-profile hostages, but Betancourt and three U.S. contractors remain in captivity.

Betancourt's daughter says she is extremely anxious and fears her mother may die. Two former hostages released yesterday by the FARC rebels said Betancourt is very ill.

"It hurts my soul, she is very bad, very, very sick. She is exhausted physically and in her morale," said one of the freed hostages, ex-lawmaker Luis Eladio Perez.

"Ingrid is mistreated very badly, they have vented their anger on her, they have her chained up in inhumane conditions."

He said Betancourt, 46, suffered from liver problems.

The FARC released Perez and three other hostages in a deal brokered by left-wing Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who has riled Bogota and Washington by calling for the guerrillas to be taken off international terrorism lists.

Betancourt was last seen in a rebel video released last year in which she looked gaunt and despondent, sitting at a wooden bench in the jungle. In a letter to her mother she wrote: "We live like the dead."

"As a woman and a mother, I want to send a message to Ingrid Betancourt, who has been left behind in the jungle very sick," Gloria Polanco, another former lawmaker released after more than six years in captivity, told Colombia's Caracol radio.

Betancourt's husband, Juan Carlos Lecompte, said that he already knew she was in bad condition.

"That is why it is urgent to find a way to free her," he said.

Perez said the three American captives - Keith Stansell, Marc Gonsalves and Thomas Howes - all suffered from jungle illnesses and injuries received when their aircraft crashed in the jungle during an anti-drug mission in 2003.

He said he had spent the last six months of his captivity sleeping in the same camp as the three U.S. Defence Department contractors, who recently marked five years in rebel hands.

A recent decision by a U.S. judge to sentence a rebel commander, alias "Simon Trinidad," to 60 years in prison for his part in the kidnapping of the Americans hit the three men hard. The rebels say the U.S. captives must be exchanged for two guerrilla commanders jailed in the United States.

"They are pretty down, especially after the sentencing of Simon Trinidad," Perez said.

A deal to release all high profile rebel hostages has been stalled over a rebel demand that Uribe demilitarize an area to facilitate hostage exchange. Uribe rejects the condition because he says it will allow the FARC to regroup.

Will Sarkozy fly into the jungle to rescue Bentancourt as the headline reads?

Sorry buggy, but I just don't believe that President Sarkozy is going to keep up the same level of attention or political pressure for the release of all the hostages if Ingrid is released first. The reason why I say this is there's no particularly reason she should be released ahead of all the others who have suffered equally or worse, whose families have suffered equally or worse, but just don't happen to be global celebs, yet that's exactly what Sarkozy is lobbying for.

The French have units of the Foreign Legion that go through extremely intensive training in jungle warfare in the jungles of French Guyana. I have seen documentaries on that training. It is so intense that most other countries' special forces will not go near the place.

Would it be a stretch to suggest that Sarkozy would be contemplating deployment of a small detachment of Foreign Legionnaires for use against the FARC? That is precisely the sort of thing those Legionnaires sign up for, many of whom are Colombian by the way. Some of those Legionnaire NCO's who train those guys in French Guyana are native Spanish speakers.

It would not be the first time that the Foreign Legion has intervened in another country on behalf of French citizens.

I wouldn't be surprised if units of the Legion are already deployed in FARC controlled areas scoping out the situation.

Bugsy, it wasn't an attack against a nationality, you'll know it when I make one, it was a statement of fact, The French only really care about Ingrid. once she is released or dies, the French interest in Colombia's hostage issue will disappear, or at least wane considerably.

The French government is, and always has been, only for the French. If Sarkosy manages to obtain Betancourts release this will be a great PR stunt for him and his political party. If he can´t, or she dies, the Venezuelans will never hear from France again.
Interesting theory about the French Foreign Legion. That would be a rocket up Chaves´arse!

I would not blame if the French or anyother nationalities don´t get involve as much in trying to release the captive persons in Colombia after their own natives are free or dead.

We are not to critizice other countries for their lack or none involvement in the captives crisis, we ought to find solutions within our borders.

All this talking about the captives, Chavez and else it is only making more obvious the lack of interest and strenght on our Goverment in order to release and end captivity of anyone in Colombia.

The same captives felt forgotten by Colombians.

There were statements from France a week ago or so that sugest Uribe's visit there was productive. It does appear that France is now conscious of making the FARC responsible for its actions and not simply screaming that Uribe is to blame. It's not at all a semantic thing, either. There are at 750 hostages and Uribe has to figure out some way to bring them to freedom without turning it into 45 million hostages. It's easy to assign too much responsibility to a government which is naturally accountable for its actions and must be responsive when the nature of the FARC is precisely the opposite. That's why the FARC does these things...

I had a cousin who we grew up together with, it was always (i don't know how well you know the extended family dynamics in Colombia, seeing how you only became acquinted with it recently) weekends at their house, or semana santa at our ranch, but we were always together. He was a couple years older than my bros and I, so he's the one who first got us drunk, took us the la casa de citas, took us hunting etc....there was no delineating line where my brothers ended and he started. Then one day he gets kidnapped by that "social movement" known as the the FARC, and before the ransome negotiations start in serious, something goes terribly wrong and they kill him, that's not abstract. So when guys like Rubi say kill them all, i think fuck you, but then I wonder, knowning how gregarious and vivacious he was, how would he deal with being chained by the neck to a tree in the jungle for the ten best years of his life and i am sure that he would say "please mount a rescue oparation and if it fails and i get killed, so be it, because being chained to a tree in the jungle for the rest of your life is worse than death", Now that is in the abstract. I'm glad i don't have to make the choice. Uribe does, and unlike you, i don't think i would know better than he does.
