Columbia

I don't think it's a big deal when someone spells Colombia Columbia. Colombia or Columbia is the personification of America as a goddess, so it's more about meaning than the spelling. Does it really make sense to correct someone about the spelling of a country in a different language? Do Chinese people go crazy when we don't use characters to spell their country's name? Germany is really spelled something like Deutschland but they aren't complaining.

Deutschland they don't complain because that is how is spelled in his nativlanguage German, like the dutchs spell Holland in his native language Netterlands. but worldwide they know that they are call Germany and holland. But Colombia hasn't got translation in any other language Colombia is Colombia,Unless we decide to find an Indian native language to translate it, so if you said Columbia we think Canada or other part of the USA.
Now chinnesse don't go crazy because we don't use tha character, that characters is their langugage and they know we cannot speak it. as we don't get cross if you don't speak Spanish for example.
Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong :-)

Kat1 Colombia is spelled differently depending upon the language of the speaker. Kolumbien or Colombie are just two examples I can think of without digging out any books.

One Does Not Live In... Amerika they live in America. I would think that common courtesy dictates spelling the name of a country correctly, especially if you are commenting on that country. Columbia is simply not correct if you are using English.

Guess what? Colombians spell the name of their country COLOMBIA and that's good enough for me.

Ummm. With a name like Tony (male spelling), I feel the need to correct people who write to me as Toni (female spelling). I'm completely secure in my manhood, but it's just a pet peeve as name name is my name. I understand how some Colombians feel the need to correct others about the correct spelling of the name of their country. It's just respectful.

Columbia is in the state of South Carolina in the USA.

Colombia is in the South Continent of the Americas.

You'd be surprised how many people here in Georgia (grown-ass people that I work with here at CNN) do not know there is a country called Colombia. It never fails, they ask me where I'm headed to, I respond to overseas to Colombia, they respond "Ah, South Carolina, not much to do there, but have a good time." True experiences.

Gomezman5 says on Oct 3, 2005, 12:01:

Kat is correct Different languages have different ways of spelling "Colombia". But there is still only ONE way to spell the name of a country in that particular language. That being the case, if one is making reference to the South American country know as Colombia, there is only ONE way to spell it correctly and that is with an "O" and NOT a "U".

It would be the same if someone were to spell Columbia Missouri with an O instead of a U. The same goes for the District of Columbia. It too can only be spelled with a U and never an O.

There is nothing to debate here...really

True Poco. One error I saw was when the US hosted the World Cup. They had footballs and t-shirts made up with the flags of countries (including those who didn't qualify) of course Colombia was spelled incorrectly.

Occasionally a newspaper article will play it safe and use both spellings in the same article.

Colombia, Brasil Brasilians spell it Brasil in English, in Brasil or outside of Brasil. Others have changed it to Brazil. There's even a gringo-based website, equivalent to PBH, named brazzil.com.

Same with Colombia.

I look at it like this. If a country is named one way and prefers to be called/spelled that exact way, why not just just follow along with that? At the minimum, it's respectful.

It's like you introducing yourself to someone as Richard, explain that you prefer to be called in that name, and he in turn insists on calling you Dick. What gives him the license to do so? Just a minor matter of respect.

Also if you come to a forum such as this and forget how to spell Colombia you can simply look at the top of the page or in your address bar!

Gomezman5 is perhaps our worst speller and even he can spell Colombia!

It is not a hard word to spell and will help you no end.

For one you won't have to GOOGLE through all the Columbia stuff to find out about Colombia.

Secondly you won't end up flying to South Carolina while your online love waits for you in Cali, Colombia.

Why can it be? I mean latin american countries don't have the courtesy to call us Americans but Norte Americanos (I have a real issue with this).

We don't call Germany by it's german name Deutchland or Brazil with Brasil.

So Colombia technically can be Columbia.

Why not?

Colombia, was named after Cristopher Columbus (Spanish is Cristobal Colon). Regarding native Indian languages, only 1% in Colombia are of Indian extraction and perhaps even less speak native Indian languages (just about the same as the USA). As for myself, I was born in Colombia, and frankly, it does not bother me if somebody wants to spell Colombia, Columbia or Kolumbia or whatever, as it is all because of language difference.
The Chinese say it "kaolunbiyai."

At the Univision forum There is a constant arguments between South Americans and Mexicans over the proper spelling of Mexico, because South Americans prefer Mejico rather than Mexico. Mexicans get really angry and feel that Mejico is like an insult.

There is more to life than to get bent out of shape over which is proper - Mexico or Mejico.
