Gringos are number one at everything because they will not accept coming in second to anyone. They refuse to be number 2 or 26 at anything, for them, the goal is always number one, period! We (Colombia) might be number one or close to it if we compared ourselves with other third world modefoques, Haiti, Argentina, , Ecuador, Spain, Peru, Brazil, Santo Domingo, Venezuela, etc.
USA is so powerful that all these European countries got together (euro) to compete against USA and they still can’t beat American’s in wealth. Gringos have no other rivals. Maybe if all the countries in the planet got together and competed against USA there might be a chance, but I don’t think that would work. There’s gotta be other modefoques in the universe richer than the gringos, maybe in the planet Uranus.

The Figures Some of the figures might be dated. As Tinto said, Colombia has gone up to the 31st place in the world's largest economy ranking. I don't think we have bragging rights until we surpass the 28th spot for the largest economy (we are the 28th most populous nation so our economy should at least be on the same spot).

Elmo, the reason why we are #2 for coffee production is because Brazil is #1, keep in mind Brazil has like 9 times the land area and 6 or 7 times the population of Colombia. However, our coffee is still #1 in quality (how many people do you hear saying "Gimme a cup of Brazilian coffee??). You do have a point however, that Colombia doesn't score so well compared to the States or Europe, but it does quite well compared to other Latin countries. However, we do fare better than a lot of European countries (Italy, Russia) in terms of global competitiveness... hey that is something.

Hunter has a point though, the inflation has gone down since these rankings and the economy has grown.

there might be some other reasons than the family harmony and bliss for the low divorce rate. First of all, it's a Roman Catholic country. There's no divorce from a Catholic marriage; it's a terminal condition. Civil marriages may be dissolved and in truth, the Catholic marriages can also be annulled, but that is a possibility for only for few.

The legislation has changed since the time I permanently lived in Colombia but at that time people didn't actually get legally married after separating from the first spouse; they got a fake wedding in Ecuador or Venezuela just to meet the requirements of the society.

The Catholic church, the faith of most south americans does not believe in equality for women either otherwise there would be sanctioned women priests, etc. Man is still in charge of the catholic church as man is still in charge of colombia.

For example, I found it strange that Canada, with a much, much smaller GDP than say Brazil's, is a member of G8. Then I concluded that it was GDP per capita (Canada has a tiny population of 30mil, Brazil almost a quarter of a billion)

women Yes while women have the right to vote and hold political positions in many other many countries, unlike the U.S. Canada, U.K. the men still have the final say in life whether a woman is a political office holder or not. At the end of the day the man is still the head of the family and the women respectfully know it. Something many men understand which is why they go to other countries looking for a respectful woman who not only preaches her religion, but actually practices it rather than being a hipprocrite. The same goes for women mayors in Colombia whom are still respectful to men as they know better than to be otherwise.

women Well that statement was somewhat hippocritcal as they are only following the teachings of the Koran, and if one is a Christian, particularly a Catholic christian one should really follow the teachings of the Bible. There is no double standard as both the Koran and bible say the exactly the same thing, the woman is to follow the man. The pope would say the same, he does not hate women, but rather only follows the teachings of the Bible, and fortuneately enough he and the Catholic church are not yet overrun by equality laws and liberated women.

DIVORCE RATE IN COLOMBIA The divorce rate in Colombia is low simply because the great majority of families simply can't afford to support two separate households so they stick it out together for the children. Sounds familar to me.

This is always the answer I receive when I have asked the question for the past six years. It is very difficult for four working people under one roof to support one household so how can these same number of people support two households.
