Colombia’s Cornered President Raises the Stakes

Posted By Forrest Hylton On 5th March 2008 at 12:14 In United States, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador | No Comments

Interesting views on the current situation, with good historic background and analysis of what lead to what has been unfolding as of the recent incidents in the colombo-ecuadorian frontier, and what may come thereof going forward...

The first part of the article seemed somewhat interesting. It definitely made some valid points about Uribe's suspected ties to some unsavory folks.

However, upon continued reading, it became very clear that the author of the article is nothing more than a chavez/farc supporter and apologist. Uribe is no saint, but no one in Colombian politics is. reyes, chavez and farc are enemies of the Colombian people and need to be dealt with accordingly. This story is ridiculously one-sided. Some people claim that the Colombian media is completely biased, and to some extent it is true, but this article is even less objective. It is simply propaganda for a bunch of terrorists and their supporters.

I didn't bother to read the article, I just looked at the source, at the bottom of the page :

"He is a frequent contributor to NACLA and New Left Review."

Gee, Rubitio, don't sugar coat it-give it to us straight. I agree, at last a Colombian president with an attitude.

I havn't read the article but from what I can gleen ok yes the FARC, paras , ELN yes evil animals, but if you read extensively the paras are mercenary without political reason or any reason only financial gain, not excusing the others but Uribes birth child is the hidden evil here. If you realy analise him and his past especialy his recent past maybe he's not a knight in shining armour but a pawn in a bigger game beyond his control happy to be manouvered waiting for the big payout, check mate, yo no se !

" they are also more likely to go after people without a good reason which the AUC NEVER does, brutal and horrible as they are..."

No I disagree with that particular statement (agree with the rest 100%). Actually I finished writing a long piece about the AUC recently, they have many a massacre to their name, more in fact this past decade than the FARC. Civilian massacres too, anyone suspected of being a FARC sympathizer. In fact, you'll fiind that the FARC has some rural legitimacy precisely because people did not trust the state to protect them from the murderous paras (and who can blame them). Vice versa of course, the AUC had legitimacy too...

The Paras also paint political opponents as Guerilla sympathizers even though they are not. That's how they justify their killings sometimes.

Read the article again, it is good journalism pointing out that Uribe is one of the center pieces of the para-politica , but definitely one sided. Non subjective journalism is hard to come by these days, the writer must have been trained in the U.S. :)

These events are not that bad for president Uribe. It keeps the para-politica out of the mainstream. Good news for Uribe!
