Colombia’s City On A Hill

Medellín goes from murder capital to model city. \ By Daniel Kurtz-Phelan | NEWSWEEK Nov 19, 2007 Issue

Sergio Fajardo, a shaggy-haired mathematician with a University of Wisconsin Ph.D., was elected mayor of Medellin and seems to have worked a near-miracle. I'm impressed, remains me of Mocus style in Bogota.

Thank you Neonovo for the link to this article. Correct me if I am wrong, but Colombia's current president, Alvaro Uribe, was also the mayor of Medellin before running for the presidential elections. I think Sergio Fajardo will attempt to do the same. When I go back to Colombia, I would want to do the same for Cali.

Take care,

Julian Garcia

Great article on Medellin! It makes me anxious to go back in August....
Was there much corruption in Medellin in the 80's as Uribe was mayor?
Or was he trying to clean things up as hard as today?

Julian, the article so states, and I've read here that Uribe was indeed a politico-darling in Antioquia back when, but I am certainly no expert in paisa-politics. And I bowed out trying to understand Colombian-politics some time ago, do to a myriad of events (way too long to list here) such as the murder of Antioquia governor Guillermo Gaviria, after his kidnapping during a peace march, back in 2003. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3004187.stm.
I'm sure Fajardo is just doing his thing, w/out trying to understand what went wrong. If you can do the same for Cali, go for it. (you a PhD also?)

NYbombero, I'm headed to Bogota Christmas day, so I feel your anxiety; however, I'm older, (wiser?), and hopefully more prudent. I'm just going to spend holidays w/my 2 year-old, and Colombian wife and in-laws, prototypical working-colombian family among whom there are an accountant, a taxi driver-U-student, and former seminarian, and who hailed from the hinderlands around el nevado del Cucuy a copule of decades ago. I'm hoping to go to the thier ancestral home during this trip, but it is a real journey.

Political-ranting form either a left or right-wing or even an ant-corruption stance means very little to the typical colombian, so now I just spend my time helping with chores, taking care of my infant daughter, listening to music, reading, and waiting to hear that bicycle-bell coming up the street announcing is time for mazamorra !!
