Colombia's army says eight soldiers have been killed in a minefield

Colombia's army says eight soldiers have been killed in a minefield in the country's remote southwest. It blames leftist rebels.

An army spokeswoman says the troops belonged to a 30-man foot patrol and died in Narino province, where guerrillas from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia are active. The province is an area of major coca cultivation.

The spokeswoman says they were killed early Wednesday in the municipality of Barbacoas.

Anti-personnel mines are now responsible for about half the military deaths in Colombia's conflict. Mines have killed 70 soldiers and 23 civilians this year through the end of August.

yeah what about the children and innocent people who are killed and maimed for life by these mines with NO government help!

we saw a man with NO LEGS living in the parking lot of Plaza de Americas in BOGOTA- looking thru the trash for food and no one came by to help him!! why is that???
IN the US he would have gotten Medicaid/Medicare food stamps and PUBLIC ASSISTANCE for Housing?? Does the GOVERNMENT TURN AND LOOK THE OTHER WAY and pretend this DOES NOT EXIST???
