Colombians Rock the Vote!

Hi all,
I want to make a web page that encourages Colombians who live in the US and are allowed to vote, to go to vote next week. On it, I want to put reasons why they should vote, and the track record with regards to issues they might care about for both candidates.

This election will be very close and is undoubtedly one of the most important elections ever. If we can get 100 Colombians to go to vote we might swing the election!

The problem is, I don't know much about politics, so I'll need some help. Who wants to help make this page? If you have ideas, just put them in the comments, I'll compile them into this page.

Note: I don't want this to become a big discussion on who to vote for. As long as Colombians are informed and go to vote, I believe it's a good thing. What I want to do is outline the issues that could be of specific interest to Colombians, and the stands of the different candidates on these issues.

Why you should vote:

This is one of the most important elections ever. Last election was decided with a few hundred votes. This one is expected to be just as close. So go vote, encourage our friends to vote, and vote for Colombia! You might just make the difference!

How to vote
This site has information about how to vote. In short, it works like this:

Before you can even think about voting, you have to register to vote (except in North Dakota). And not only do you have to register, but you have to make sure you do it within a certain amount of time before the election. Each state has a different deadline for voter registration, here is a list of them.

Question: If you haven't registered already, is it too late?

This page has a good overview of what to do if you want to vote.

Please help us complete this page by posting in the comments (you have to log in first). Also send this page to your Colombian friends in the USA, and encourage them to go to vote if they can!

What you can do

If you are allowed to vote in the US, make sure you do so!

If you are not allowed, you should try to convince your friends/family who are allowed that they should go and vote. Send them an email. Send them this page. Give them a phone call and ask them if they plan to vote.

If they don't use the internet much, print out this flyer about the 4 steps to voting (PDF), and give it to them. This page has more stuff to print out.

(Does anyone have links to Spanish language information materials?)

Not that I don't think it's a good idea
What exactly would change for Colombia in the US / Colombia as a country if one or the other got selected.

I don't have a preference for either of them ;-)

Kerry for the U.S., for Colombia, for the World I will vote for the first time in the US this election. I recently registered to vote, as I am 24 but hadn't lived in the US since I was 14... and during the last election I was in Bogota and so uninformed and disinterested I didn't register at the embassy.

Of course, I will vote for... JOHN KERRY!!!

I don't wanna make this some long political speach, but to me it is so obvious he should be the next president... it's hard for me to understand how so many people are still supporting Bush. So many lies, bad judgement, stubornness, arrogance... not to mention lost jobs, healthcare costs through the roof, highest deficit in history, environment policy in the hands of the industries. Com'on people, how on Earth could this man be re-elected???!!!

I have dual citizenship, with more sentimental allegiance to Colombia, plus I have lived in Europe and dealt with people from many cultures and backgrounds... so I will vote as a citizen of the world, because like it or not, the US president not only decides what happens in this country but to a large extent the course the world will take for the coming years. My vote against Bush, even though it is just one vote, will be the voice of dozens or even hundreds of my friends from Colombia and other coutnries who cannot vote but are firmly against Bush and his policies. They are right to be concerned, his actions have consequences on everyone and are driving us towards a global disorder and right-wing religious moralism not seen for much time in world leadership.

I voted for Uribe in the last colombian elections, and am very satisfied with that decision, despite a few areas where I don't agree with his actions... anyways I think he is a capable, hard- working and responsible leader. That is why I get so pissed off when people compare him to Bush, and say that because they both are focused on fighting terror colombians who support Uribe should also support Bush... NO WAY!!! Despite what superficial analysis and simplistic commentators want us to believe, things are not that black and white.

Yes, Uribe has allied himself with Bush because he is pragmatic and the fact is that american assistance is essential for the war on drugs and defending democracy against those armed groups who want to overthrow it. But big decisions on Colombia are fortunately bi-partisan in the US, and thus I don't think this strategic alliance will in anyway be damaged by a Kerry presidency. He is an intelligent politician, experienced in foreign affairs and familiar with the colombian conflict, so I am sure he will continue efforts to help us fight for a better country in peace and development.

Why vote? I am a U.S. Citizen living in Colombia. I've already voted by absent ballot.

One of the best reasons to vote is: "I vote, I can whine & complain"

If you're Colombian and planning to vote or not to vote, tell us your story, tell us why. As Bogota said: "I vote, I can whine & complain"

Bush=Uribe I'm not really clear on how each candidate stands or what plans/promises they have for Colombia. If I'm not mistaken I think neither has actually gone into great detail regarding any Latin American issues. I am very pleased with the job Uribe has performed and am also outraged when they mix the assistance he's gotten from the Republicans. Particularly because one of his key characteristics was not belonging to any party! With that in mind I think that its better to set aside the "labels" and simply look at the candidates, because a lot of people simply vote for a certain party simply because that's the party their family has voted for their entire life.In my opinion, I would vote for the brighter guy. Is like the Dr. example, we don't want to put our lives(health) in the hands of the mediocre guy, you want the guy that aced everything and actually know what the heart looks like!

Absent ballot Peter,

I went to the U.S. Embassy in Bogota and requested a Fl ballet, the ballet had to be mailed to me from the U.S., that alone took a month.

I think contacting your state directly is possible but at this late date it may be to late.

I will also cast my vote for John Kerry for president of the United States of America. I've had enough of this incompetent, duplicitous, and arrogant president who has only made the world a more dangerous place. I also disagree completely with the Uribe/Bush comparison because there's a great difference. Whereas Bush decided to declare an illegal war on a country that didn't attack the USA and turns out didn't possess any WMD's, Uribe is going after terrorists who are on colombian soil and have been attacking Colombia for the past forty years!

I too was disappointed when Colombia decided to support the USA's decision to invade Iraq, I believe Colombia did it out of self-interest rather than conviction. After all, Colombia didn't want to risk losing those millions of dollars that are necessary to defeat the guerrillas, paramilitaries, and narcotraffickers. I just hope the next time a similar situation occurs, Colombia chooses to do the right thing and not give in to the whims of the USA, even if that means losing aid.

this is going to be interesting I think. I just read that 50 000 mail votes have already disappeared in Florida...
Kerry would probably get my vote too, since Mickey Mouse is not candidating....
In the 90ies Colombia was black-listed for long periods by the US government for aid and such, and any Colombian president who would wish to obtain economic or military aid from the US better play along the US official policies. An example of that was that Colombia was one of the two countries in Latin America that supported Bush on his Iraqui war.
I seriously doubt that Uribe would feel any affinity to Bush personally.
Cheers,
Desi

my memory fails a bit on this issue too, but I remember talking to a friend in Cali in 1999 or 1998 about the blacklisting. That would be Pastrana's time as president.
It's a long tradition in Colombia that when the ruling elite wants to school a future president the candidate is assigned as an ambassador in Washington first...

Kerry for President I live in the US and have for the past 20 years. Been back to Cali twice. Love the country and the city in which I was born. The best view is from El Cerro de las Tres Cruzes. In any case I'm voting for Kerry. Voted for Gore last time around and feel that was taken from under the table. Wasn't of age to vote for Clinton, but am a huge fan of his. We'll see what happens this time around.

Mr. Hollywood says on Oct 29, 2004, 18:56:

A couple differences Kerry came out and said he would strive to shift the US aid to Colombia from mostly military to more humanitarian. I think that's a good thing for the country

The question of whether Colombia continues to get aid or, rather, how much and for what, is very closely tied to US troubles in Iraq. There is a huge amount of money being thrown down that rathole and it has to come from somewhere. It's in the best interests of every other recipient of US aid to see the US out of Iraq as quickly and smoothly as possible. So whomever you think would manage that best is probably a better vote for Colombia.

I intend to vote for John Kerry. Even though he supports Plan Colombia, I believe he's willing to re-evaluate it.
Bush is much too arrogant and close-minded. Raising the troop cap in Colombia is just wrong. Plan Colombia and the so-called war on drugs is just another way to control another country. In my opinion the 3.3 billion (or even a part of it) should be used for humanitarian purposes in Colombia and to help those addicted here in the U.S. Cut off the demand for drugs, and watch the supply dwindle. Fumigating people, land, and animals doesn't stop anything, it only hurts the people. Hasn't the government learned anything from Peru and the balloon effect?
And from what I have learned over the years, Bush appears to me to be anti-Latin America overall (most recent: Cuba and Venezuela.
Bush and his people have made it very dangerous to be an American abroad.

I hear an echo... Your duplicate messages may be just a problem navigating the new site. I hope this thread does prompt those Colombianos here in the USA to get out and vote this Tuesday. I already have a headache from hearing all the talking heads putting the spin on the effect of Bin Laden's latest tape. Personally, I will be voting for Kerry, with the hope we can get the hell out of Irak; this war is draining the US.
