"More than 450 after Pizarro launched the Spanish conquest, white repression of the indigenous races is as unabated and unforgiven as ever. On a social and work level, the hostility towards whites reveals itself everyday in the street. In many areas of the Capital - which accounts for a third of the population - as well as in as in cities, towns and villages up and down the coast, in the Andes and in the Amazon basin, a white person is liable to be treated with suspicion or even contempt. He is often eyed mistrustfully or ignored, and may be hissed at as a gringo or even spat upon. Where there is a chance of squeezing money out of him, he is likely either to be begged from, robbed or assiduously courted with false bonhomie in the hope of a gift, favour or purchase. Extreme poverty reinforces the latent hatred: putting one over a gringo is a way of exacting vengeance. Sullenness, dishonesty and laziness in Indian's dealings with whites are forms of asserting and preserving individuality in a country which squashes and strangles them. They are hanging onto their souls like a prostitute who sells everything except for a kiss."
And that from the otherwise excellent Shining Path (1992) by Simon Strong, yes about Peru but about gringos in Latin America as well. PBH is full of "which Colombians love or do not love gringos" at the moment. I think what the above is saying is that white latin american or gringos, its the same thing. The few latin americans I have met who have been hostile to me in over a dozen times to Sul America have had the same argument. "Oh its easy for you, your a foreigner, people here kiss you feet beacuse your a foreigner." I tell them I think people here kiss your feet when you have money, thats the story. Look at these stupid foks with servants to do everything for them, who treat them like shit and pay them fok all. Have you hung out with anybody with money in sul america??? Have you? Have you seen how there treated when they go out??? Have you seen how people run overthemselves for a coin? Have you seen the over the top service that falls at there feet? Yes, I know why, fokkin poverty, money is scarce.
I tell you (yes sir!) I go to sul america not because Colombians or Brazilians love gringos. I go because there is still a culture where people mix more, where you can go out and make friends, yes maybe not friends for life, maybe acqui e ahora, but a place where life has some fokking interest, where hospitality and help is given to strangers, a country where characters still exist in everday life and less of the population are spoilt brats who can't live, yes CAN'T LIVE without a fokkin mobile phone. But its going to change, markets must be expanded, money made, still sul america is hotter, I love it. Thats why I go, not because of the chicas. I tell you! So, yes I am priveledged to travel, you bet. But the reason behind my travel is the great people of sul america, not because I am a fokkin pinche gringo, estrangiero. Sul Americans don't sell yourself short, the reason we come is your culture not because Colombians love Gringos.
