Don't know if this helps but when I lived there the different regions of Spain didn't like one another. Andalucians don't like the Madrilenos, the Madrilenos don't like the Catalans (Barcelonas) etc.

Even as a Gringo I sometimes felt looked down upon by a few of them although they are nothing great. Many were very nice people but mostly in the smaller towns. In Madrid and larger cities plus near the U.S (actually is Spanish, U.S. is just a tenant) Naval Base more hatred feelings. 2 of our Seabees got the living crap beat out of them and one very seriously (was in the hospital for 3 weeks) by 5 Spanishes.

And the Spains no like the Moroccans or Afrikans either. Is a racist society full of hate and venom.

Spain has had a large amount of Latinos going there sinc the 90s, especially from Colombia and Ecuador. There's a lot of racism there and many of my friends have had to go through that but they just shrug it off. I also know people who have been there and actually married Spaniards who never experieced it.

Overall it is a racist country, more so than others.

Many Spaniards tend to be extremely arrogant and racist and the skinhead problem is a big one. They seem to still think they are the greatest country in the world despite the fact that they don't even factor on the world stage. The last time Spain mattered was in 1588.

My brother lives in Barcelona and his son is constantly beaten up by multiple little Spanish fucks for being a "Sudaca". They beat him up so bad about a month ago that he ended up in the hospital. This is a seven year old child.

Some of you may remember the South American teen that was viciously attacked on a Madrid metro by some drunk asshole. The thing that pissed me off the most about that video was not so much the attack, but that nobody so much as lifted a finger to help a CHILD.

Sudaca is an ethnic slur used by Spaniards towards South Americans. There was some Spaniard asshole on PBH that threw around that epithet because he got scammed out of a camera by some prepago.

Yeah. His excuse was that he was drunk. I guess his drunken lack of inhibitions allowed his true racist feelings to take over. If I recall correctly, he more or less got a slap on the wrist. Spain is a beautiful country, but as with many countries, the local human infestation ruins it.

I saw the same segment on Caracol, Darkangel. The wife was pretty surprised. It was sort of "old news" to me. Obviously not every Spaniard is racist. However, in my experiences, the most openly racist people I have ever encountered include Spaniards. And, those same people I am thinking about right now are also the most elitist, full of themselves, pricks I have ever met. I have heard them make fun of the"dirty Spanish" accents used in different Caribbean and Latin American countries. They openly use the word n***er, feel they are above those of Indian blood, and will tear somebody down behind their back after being nice to them 5 minutes earlier.

In fairness, a totally different example is a Spaniard I currently work with. He is married to a Peruvana with obvious Indian features, and seems to be humble, hard working, and about as opposite of arrogant as you can be.

I find it ironic that they look down on the way some South Americans speak Spanish, when, at least the Spaniards I am talking about, speak with a lisp that is very fem/gay sounding.

A good read on the subject of racism in Spain is "Guerra" by Jason Webster.
In this book the author travels around Spain visiting battlegrounds and mass graves from the Spansih Civil War, and speaking to locals. A real eye opener!

When in Lanzarote on holiday with my Colombian wife a few years ago, she was really pissed off that all the Colombians she met there were cleaners, or shelf stackers in the local supermarkets. They were also referred to as "Tribals" by the Spaniards.

Sorry to butt in but Spain is not the only European nation that has a superiority complex and has racist tendencies. My Colombian wife needed to see a doctor in Paris a couple of years ago and he thought it amusing to open the session with "what, couldn't your local witchdoctor help?". She walked straight out without a word.

I lived in Spain for 2 years and never heard the term "tribales".

I also think that underqualified immigrants the world over find themselves in those jobs, Brit. I doubt the Chinese cockle-pickers found themselves lauding British equality of opportunities as they were swallowing the Morecombe sea.

SiV I don't believe that the racism in Spain towards Colombians is something to laugh at or take lightly. I have heard this happening allot at airports in Spain. Colombians are viewed as second class citizens are often treated poorly. This is documented allot and if I Googled it I could find allot of instances. Being British does not take on the negative connotation as being from a 3rd world country and seen as a peasant. Many Colombians have experienced this in Spain. Correct me if I am wrong.

A 30 second search on Google shows:

Wikepedia says.

"In 2003, Sanín became Colombia's Ambassador to Spain. She decided not to run for the 2006 Colombian presidential elections. As Colombian ambassador to Spain Sanín had to deal with the growing discrimination against Colombians in that country, issues related to illegal Colombian immigrants in Spain and the large number of Colombian citizens imprisoned in the European country. She also promoted numerous cultural exchanges and advocated on behalf of temporary work and technical and education training for Colombians in Spain. On November 19, 2007 President Uribe announced her transfer to the United Kingdom diplomatic mission being replaced by the Vice President of Colombia, Francisco Santos."

It's in anyone's imagination. Racism against Colombia is alive and thriving in Spain.

SiV says on Mar 13, 2008, 06:44:

Lost gringo, my comment was certainly not laughing at racism: it was drawing an almost exact parallel between two jokes which both could be construed as mildly racist, or at least sterotypical, one in Spain and one in Colombia.

Now if you really want to talk about racism in Spain, let's do so. Like I said previously, I lived 2 years in Spain, in Madrid and Granada. I think most Spanish people have a very high respect for human rights and the law, and think most Latin Americans there live well protected there under the system, and many illegals have been legalised, unlike for example, in the US, where illegal workers are generally underpaid and underprotected.

I found though, that there was generally a slightly higher level of intolerance, slightly more acceptance of racist attitudes than in my country the UK, and probably other Western European countries. I put in down to several factors. Firstly the historical: Spain was largely a closed country until the death of Franco in 1975. Now under Franco, regional differences were excaberated for political reasons, especially against the Basques and Catalans which were Republican strongholds. This gave rise to the regionalism and suspicions which exist even today, to some point. Also, this meant that Spain didn't receive the influx of immigrants which other countries like the UK and France did after WWII. This means that immigration is a relatively new phenomenon for the Spanish, and that the period of conflicts and adjustments, which both the UK and France underwent are coming somewhat late.

Spain now receives many illegal immigrants, both from Latin America, being a Spanish-speaking country and from Africa, due to being the closest country to the African continent, probably a lot more than the rest of Europe. This obviously brings certain problems in terms of employment, crime, etc. as well as the cultural ones.

One of the cultural problems prominent in many Spanish imaginary and media is that one Latin American gangs. The Spanish are generally quite pacifistic, in comparison to the Brits, and certainly the US, and physical aggression is much less common generally. The Latin Americans have taken with them gangs such as the Latin Kings and the Ñetos, and these are very much talked about in the media. Many Spanish are afraid of this new phenomena of gang violence, and reject it.

Like I said previously, in my perception, the Spanish are slightly more racist than other Western Europeans, and such attitudes are unacceptable. However, this is still only a minority of Spanish, and i think the majority accept and welcome immigration. To be honest, I feel that the Ecuadorians, due to the Latin Kings originating from there, and also that they are the most numerous ethnic group, are more discriminated against than Colombians. Obviously, there are some Escobar jokes, narco stereotypes, but what really do you expect?

Another thing on this thread is a certain amount of hypocrispy: you can't go condemning the Spanish for being racist by calling them Spanish f**ks: this, too, is racist. Also, in the rest of Europe and the N America, immigrants, at least the undereducated and unqualified, occupy the lower paid jobs in society. This is not particular to Spain, it is a worldwide phenomena.

I think often the key to overcoming racism is, cheesey as it sound, understanding. This post is by way of explanation, not justification. I believe race relations in Spain are a little backward in many respects, but I think they are learning fast.

SiV I have no direct experience with racism in Spain as you have. I only know what I have heard. I am sure you are not racist yourself. I didn't mean to accuse you. Things I have heard are that the Spanish are often very rude to Colombians in general. You are 100% about understanding as the key to overcome racism and part of that concept is education. And in some small way that is what is hopefully done on forums such as these.
