"Colombians, at least in Bogota, tend to be very judging"

The subject line is a quote from this site http://wikitravel.org/en/Colombia
Being an 'open source' operation you can go there and and you 2 pesitos(!)

Well I'd have to say that most Colombians I know don't suffer at all from lack of strong opinions on whatever, and they aren't afraid to voice them. Even if they don't get voiced in public, you just about can guarantee it will be voiced to close friends or family.

I'm often apalled by what my mother or aunts have said to me in private about people that we know, or situations in the world. My mother in particular loves to cast huge blanket statements, to which I promptly respond with a jarring blanket statement about Colombia.

To me, it also explains in part the obsession with "appearances", and putting a certain face (or more literally clothing label) out.

Nothing New My mother makes statements like that and she's a gringa. Opinions are like belly buttons (everyone has one). Not everyone's opinion makes sense, however. Perhaps this is not a Colombian phenomenon but rather one of people in general who have a rather shallow understanding of things.

Es cierto. You can find that type of person everywhere but there is a preponderance of them in Colombia. People seem to be a lot more concerned about what other people will think. This is definitely true of my wife.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.
