With my recent real estate investments and other stuff I have on the side I should be moving back completely in about 3 to 5 years. There are many factors.

My 5 year plan is probably going to be in the area of diving my year where i stay 6 months in Medellin and 6 here with my daughter. NOt sure how it will pan out maybe more frequent travels im not sure.

Like I said I love my Medellin and wouldnt change it for anything.

Now in regards to money. I spend a lot. I party a lot. I like to live good and well as a single guy who doesnt allow any of my ladies to pay believe me its an expensive lifestyle. You shoudl pass by my hangout spots here in Queens, NY and spend some time with my female friends and see how much your going to need money. jajaj

Yes this and other things are the downside to our beautiful country. I have never said Colombia is a Utopia. Furthermore, if i were a foreigner not having any link to Colombia I would probably visit but not live there. I was raised in Colombia and am probably used to all those little things that "Suck" about our country. I hope with time things can eventually change in those areas.

For all the cons and bad press about Colombia the good and pros in "my eyes and heart" outweigh everything by far.

Rubito... sorry if i have asked you this before but please tell me about yourself? are you colombian or have colombian parents?

That statement tells me that you are not really in tune with family traditions we have in Colombia and honestly in most latin american countries. Im refering to:

"If they're over 18, why would you worry about living in the same town anymore?"

First my answer, Because its my daughter (my blood) and I love her.

Second, family is big for us paisas, colombians, and latinos for the most part. i know a good percentage of puerto ricans and dominicans are a bit more americanized and less family oriented but for the most part most latinos are very much very "tight" with their families.

i wasnt married when i had my daughter. thats a whole separate issue romy. the issue here is family values in regards to the close ties between parents and their children irregardless of wether they were por to a married couple or not.

the male-female relationship is fundamental in 'family'... at least traditionally. The thing is that this traditional family structure is highly invalid nowadays, therefore it's not logical to argue for family values when they are so relative.

She works during the day in a Funeral Home as a office assistant and at night she is a waiter at "Mister Cocktails" which is where i met her.

She made the following statement that will explain to you many things about women in Colombia: "Mira me toca trabajar como una burra pa poder sostener a mi hijo y a mi abuela. I just don't think it's valid or even logical to argue that someone has or doesn't have family values, unless if you are referring to the ENTIRE traditional structure. Otherwise it's baseless.

Rubito, I think what is at effect in what you call a 'double standard' is that parents have a higher responsibility to see (and do everything possible) to see their children succeed, therefore they will stay with them if needed or let them go if it's better for them.

no it doesnt seem weird to me. like i said you would have to have family traditions such as ours, or probably simply be just closer to your family to understand. my mother came to the US when she was 20. she left her house to come work and send money to her family who was not doing too well. her brothers (my uncles) were both killed and my grandfather died young. My mother decided to come to america to help my grandmother and her sisters. To this day she still helps her extended family. So do I. Now she never left back to Colombia because now after she had children they became the priority. do you understand what im saying?

I think that emphasis on the word "prefer" is the point. I think that it is all about preference. You brought them into the world, and you get to make those decisions the best you can. There is no guarantee as to the best place to raise a child.
Maybe Mitch is referring to their future and education?
depends on what you think will happen...it is not just Colombia. People come from many other countries to the US to get their College education and return (although harder these days with the cost) and make a substantial living. Many people see better opportunities by obtainig their initial education in the US, as it is transferrable to many other countries - but no the other way. All a perspective.

Well, I am not sure if the public school system vs private mirrors anything close to the mess we have in the US...From what I know it is better in Colombia (comparing to US) and typically going to private school is more of an issue of what part you are from and a "class or status issue". But maybe I was misinformed (?) Very possible ja!
My ex's first daughter went to public school and learned spanish, english and french in Bogota. She was a bit sassy jaja, but I don;t think her attitude had anything to do with going to public school.

I think they are old enough to decided where they want to live, and you don't have to be behind them, by the age of 18 you have already taught them enough family values and is up to them now.
I for example would like to spend lots of time in Colombia, if my kids want to join me they are welcome but i can't stay in here after they both leave the house, what for?... they soon will make their own life maybe they will move abroad. who knows, is easier in Colombia for families to stay together but the USA /Europe is another culture, kids become more independent, no matter how much family values you have taught them they want to fly the nest as soon as possible and they have the resources.

You see, in our culture, our parents actually love us and vice versa! "And I have yet to understand why anyone would glorify a tradition" where apparently the kids and the parents can't stand each other and both can't wait till the kid turns 18 to kick them out! Imagine that, leaving at 18, and since most of us can't even remember the first 3 or 4 years of our lives, that means you only really spent about 15 years with your beloved parents, that's a pittance of our lifetime!

I mean honestly, when was the last time anyone saw a gringo teenager holding his mother or grandmothers hand in public? They'd die of embarrassment!

Why is it that some non-Colombians have the audacity to come to a website about Colombia and try to impose their traditions on us, especially their lackluster family values?

Hmmm, maybe that's why gringos value living by themselves and away from thier families so much, so they can have their own 'privacy' to do all those drugs!

Yes, there are those kind too, but then again, there are plenty of th other kind who call their aging parents every day, visit them frquently and care very deeply for them without smothering or suffocating them with their constant hovering over them. Take my Mum, for example, I know she loves me very dearly and I love her just as dearly but she needs space and she WANTS to live independently and have her own household and would absolutely HATE living with any of her dearly beloved children and their families. She likes living in her apartment with all amenities , just a five-minute ride from her daughter's, 15 minutes from the other daughter, grandchildren och great-grandchildren visit her and when she was hospitalized her grandchildren kept her company and held her hand at the hospital.

I'm with slguy on this, we love our children enough to give them room to develop into independent, self-supporting, strong individuals and as parents keep on living our lives even after the kids have moved out and keep on loving and enjoying their company even if they are not crowding on us with their lifestyle changes and friends and choices that we may not always agree with but have to accept because it's not us who decide over them.

I wanted to ask but was afraid I'd get my butt kicked:

- do they fight over who gets the top bunk?
- do they drape a blanket over the bed and make a fort and play with flashlights in the fort?
- does the guy on the bottom annoy the hell out of the guy on the top by kicking the slats (support boards) above him?

CatGirl says on May 16, 2008, 11:33:

Desi - I completely agree 100%. There comes a point in every persons life where independence and maintaining individual self becomes a luxury and a proud asset after a certain point.
I am sure the dynamics of every family is unique to itself. There are many cultures that "take care" and house their elders. Many times I find these folks pushed in the back or simply left to be just a mere shadow in the room or house. Not all people are good at taking care of other people and meeting their needs BTW. I respect family members that recognize this and take the necessary steps to ensure their loved ones are cared for appropriately (preferrably in the home if possible)
I feel the issue is Respect of the person and respect of what they have accomplished. Many times you see the younger generation miss out on much because of this. My 100 year old grandfather stayed at home until his last days...but my brother's never felt any interest in learning anything from him or take steps to find out his interests. How do you think it would feel when all your friends have died and you are 99 years old, with no one to relate to? Pretty isolated, eh? I would cherish his stories...even if he was a difficult personality, he was in WW2 and had many accomplishments and won many awards in his life.
Oh well...that's all I guess
