And Kernow, if you want to call me GomeXman, that's fine. I am Colombian, and I am proud to be Colombian.

Chao.

Gomezman5 says on Jun 3, 2006, 07:26:

Well, we did not know. That you're a SHE. For all I know, you could be my friend "monpirri1" using another name. He keeps telling me how ignorant I am about Colombia and how I need to get educated. Maybe he figured the easiest way to educate me is by pretending he is a Colombian woman, a teacher non the less, living in Chicago. On the other hand, when I saw the "007" in your name, I thought you were related to James Bond. In fact, you could have been "BlondJamesBond's" sister. He is another guy on this Board who has had his share of arguments with me. I have not seen him in a while though.

OK...so where do you teach in my wonderful city? I sure hope for your sake it's not in our wonderful Chicago Public School system. Anyway, as far as I know, I am the only person on this Board from Chicago. When I first got on here a year and a half ago, there used to be some Chicago Cop that was a member here, but he disappeared shortly after I arrived. He wanted to meet with me, but I am not a fan of Chgo's finest Crooks due to the many tactics that they engage in that cost people their liberty. I would rather (almost) have a beer with a member of the FARC than with a Chgo cop. But then again, that would cost me my liberty too. Ooops there I go again, saying something about the politics in Colombia of which I know nothing about.

Come to think of it, you must be monpirri. Goodness, the thought of monpirri living in Chicago...hmmmm...can't be. Or worse yet, you're that new Mexican employee that I hired but now can't fire. I swear, if she says one more derogatory comment about Colombia, I'm going to pay ColX and Colombiche to come here to set her straight. In fact, I'll bring GIB here from Bogota to make sure the job is done right. Although, GIB has mellowed out of late. He is almost losing his Rambo-like image. Anyway, I'll even put them up in the Four Seasons Hotel, and give them a week of entertainmet and restaurants ...all at my expense. OK, is that you? Tell me now! Are you the Mexicana taunting me? I'll make sure you never eat another tortilla agian. Worse yet, I'll make you eat arepa with morcilla. Now tell me that is not punishment for a Mexicana. They know not where they venture when they play with the G5.

Oh...another Colombian....in Skokie. And that is where my sister lives. Hi "Airetupal" Nice to meet you. Anyway, the Colombian bakery you are referring to on Lincoln is called, "Mekatos". It is located in the 5400 block of north Lincoln ave, accross from the 20th district Police (aka Crooks) Station. I know the owner and the head baker. I knew the original owner who now lives in Miami. By the way, did you know that the original owner also still owns Pueblito Viejo...the club next door?

OK, 007....so that's about it.

007CA says on Jun 3, 2006, 08:06:

gracias Gomezman y airetupal I swear that I am not your friend monopirri or the mexican woman you're talking about. I teach in a northern suburb, not for CPS. I live in the city though, Ravenswood, and my sister is in Evanston. The "007CA" actually comes from the license plate number I had when I lived in CA. But, I do love james bond movies!

Soy gringa, but speak Spanish, lived in Spain for two years, Ecuador for a few months, and have traveled to Cuba, Colombia, Mexico...I love Latin America. I've been to Colombia 3 times. I spent the last two summers there, visiting friends, conociendo el pais, and doing some volunteer work with displaced populations.
I'm also an obsessed Juanes fan!

GM- Hablas espanol?

Well, it's nice to know there is another American that loves our Latin culture. As to Las Tablas....I know the restaurant well. It was originally opened by a Caleno back in the very early 90's and its original location was a small store front with a big glass window (typical chicago type store) on Irving Park near Ravenswood. I know every Colombian restaurant in Chicago. There aren't that many though. Las Tablas is good, but it is really more Americanized. On Saturday's they have good Son Cocho de Pescado. But my problem with them is, who ever heard of serving a Bandeja Paisa without chicharon??? That's bull. In fact, they don't even sell it at the restaurant. If you're a Colombian restaurant and you hold yourself out as a Churacaria and you don't sell chicharon....you're no Colombian restaurant to me. So says me. Anyway, I know them all, I just can't remember their names. There is a good one, (good prices too) on Montrose near Kedzie...south side of the street. They even have Pollo a la Brasa made like it is in Colombia. And of course they have chicharon. Hell, even Mekatos, the bakery, sells chicharon...and it's a bakery!!

Anyway, if you live in Ravenswood, I'm your neighbor. (almost). I am in the Lake View/Lincoln Park are near LSD.

Got a go......

No estas solo Compa, I also know the owner of Pueblito Viejo across the street from the Fuzz...Why do you think he went to Miami? He also opened a Pueblito Viejo in Florida.

Yeah, Mekatos is the name of the bakery...I thought it was Antojitos Colombianos...oops! For the money, I prefer to go to Sabor a Cafe instead of any of the two Las Tablas restaurants.

There used to be a Pollo Koko-Rico on Harlem but I think they are closed. There is another good "asadero de pollo" owned by a Colombiana on Fullerton between Pulaski and Western. Good stuff, just like the old country. I always buy some "pollo" when I go home to BBrook.

I take it you dont venture to the AUSTIN district police station?

Muy Chistoso!

Ajiaco? Colombianos en Chicago...do you know where I can get a delicious bowl of ajiaco, I have been looking for ajiaco since I got back from Colombia several years ago. (I found a Colombian restaurant in LA, but they were paisas and guess what, no ajiaco :( I'm in the Midwest and would drive all the way to Chicago for ajiaco, not kidding. Do you know of anyplace? Heck, if anyone knows of anyplace closer to Nebraska I'd go. I have made some with Colombian friends, but they were not really papas criollas, and we didn't have guascas, so it really wasn't ajiaco.

Thanks, but no thanks G5 I cannot be a friend of an individual who is anti-colombia.
Why you keep saying that you are colombian? If you check all your threads, posts, comments, you are always glorifying mexico, you are more mexican than los triges de norte.
Someone please do a word count to find out which country he has praised the most.
When I'm about to hire someone, I 100% of time would try to hire a colombian because they also deserve a chance among the majority hispanic culture, and 200% of the time, I convey my pleasant stories about colombia to new incoming candidate. He or she realizes that I love Colombia too much and that all I have to share with them is nothing but 200% positive comments about colombia. Consequently, I never hear any negative stories about Colombia from them, as the one I usually hear here from you.

Gomezman5 says on Jun 3, 2006, 16:06:

Monpirri...and you call me ignorant huh? You only prove my point as to how embarassing even YOU are to the Go Go Colombia team. You're the ignorant one.

How one thinks of Colombia, has nothing to do with whether you are or are not Colombian. I was born there. That fact all by itself, believe it or not my great educator, makes me Colombian. Cedula, passport and all. AA dah? Consider yourself enlightened as of this moment. Now let me write some more negative posts OK?

One more thing my great educator....obviously you have no experience, and are clueless when it comes to interviewing people. Or maybe you do and you just feel like talking silly and making no sense for the reason of...???? ....just not wanting to make sense. Simply stated, when you and 2 others from human resources have 10 minutes to interview a candidate for a position, you interview the candidate as to his/her qualifications of for the position. You do not...excuse me, CANNOT interview him based on either yours or the candidates preconcieved political or ethnic biases (either positive or negative). I only wish the day would come that I would be representing a client in a title 42 Sec 1983 case, because I had a clown like you interviewing a person and in the course of an interview you made it eminenttly clear what your standards of hiring were. First, I would have you out of a job....probably forever because you would be a named defendant and it would follow you for future employment. Second, I would get rich quick because of the way you conducted yourself in the interview. You would not have to pay a big damage award, but your employer would. On the other hand if you had your own business, and it was you who in fact conducted the interview, my suit would cost you a fortune in legal fees (your insurance would not cover it) and when I finally obtained a judgment against you, I would just put a lien on your house or any other asset you own until the judgement is paid off....or until you begged me from here to high heaven to release you of your obligation. Lesson to you the great educator: Don't interview anyone. Here you just write like a fool, and it does not do you any damage. If you do interview people based on your above criteria, you will be one very sorry man......and slightly poorer at the same time. By the way, you mentioned that in the course of your interviews, you never hear (or would hear) any of the candidadtes talk negativly about Colombia. Well of course they wouldn't. If you are interviewing them and you say the sky is pink, they will agree with you and tell you that the sky is a pretty pink at that.

Monpirri, Monpirri, on the whole I think you are a decent person. Maybe one of these days, UC and I will take your class just for the hell of it..... :) I have to admit, I even enjoy arguing in with you almost as much as I like argueing with Juanalejo. (By the way, where has he been?)

007. Here is the scoop. (trust me...this is the real story) The owner of Pueblito Viejo, did not really want to go back to Miami. It was not as much as he, as much as it was his wife who wanted to go back and for the hubby to come with him because she did not trust him alone in Chicago. The Hubby used to own another night club down the block called Dynasty. It was a club with a 4 AM liquor license and hubby had this habit of being especially nice and close with his female clientele and the wife was no dumb one. So, she said, back to Miami we go, or we're getting a divorce. He had little choice because divorce laws in Miami are not too nice and he had at least one kid with her. Plus, it was her that contributed a lot of the money to his business ventures. She is a very wealthy lady. She owned a big commercial travel agency and she used a lot of her personal wealth to support the hubby in his business ventures.....including Mekatos, which he sold to thc current owner, Dynasty (the old disco), the original Pueblito Viejo, and yes, the second one in Miami.

Believe me, the old man was quite content here,,,,,,especially while the wife was in the big house in Miami......oh yesss. She finally lured him back to Miami when she agreed to once again support him in opening the second Pueblito Viejo.

The bottom line is that the hubby was the man up front. He knew the business, he is very artistic and extremely personable. However, he is bad on the money side, as he squanders it away in one form or another. The wife, ...she is as tough as nails. She watches everything he does. to make sure that all the profits are not spent foolishly or given away to some of his........."favorite clientele"

Anyway, maybe I should add monpirri to the punishment equation. monpirri loves teaching people and I am certain he can teach her a good lesson. What do you say monpirri? So what's your point Kernow I don't quite get it. Does your rather narrow way of thinking prohibit you from thinking that maybe I have I have also gone to other places?
Do you see anything in that paragraph that says that those are the "ONLY" places I have traveled to?

I have been to Vancouver, BC, Tornoto, Montreal, Israel (recently), Mexico (all over) the country...so what else? So because I did not mention those countries, does that in any way make me less credible. Ohhhhhh, I get it....I'm watching my writing and typing ....less mistakes, so you have to find something else to be petty about. But, like most of the time, your point, is a non point. But good try.

My apologies Kernow & World Cup In fact, I was sort of surprised because since my recent return, things had been going really well between us. And I was happy for that. But more importantly, I did not realize where the wording in Italics was coming from. How ironic!! That is a strange coincidence.

Anyway, the old days were not too far back, so that I tend to be a bit on guard when ever I open one of your posts in a thread I have participated in. Hence, the defensive posture. OK, I am glad you clarified things and called this issue to my attention because I was really more interested in communicating with you regarding your pre World Cup impressions....Any favorites? See any surprises in the picture? My only eye opener that I keep calling to everyone's attention to is the Czech Republic. Most people, at least in the US, look at me in awe when I mention them. In fact, most didn't even know they are a participant.

G5, even though Italy is ranked lower than the Czech republic and the US, I think they are the team to beat in the group. The US got a bit of a break with both the Czech republic and Italy having some serious injuries to their squads. I think Italy and the US from that group.

I think England will play conservatively in the group stages, conserving players. As always Sweden will be a problem, but England and Sweden are favourites from the group.

Germany is no problem in their group, but I am going out on a limb and predicting that Costa Rica will do better than Poland, even though odds are 400-1 for them going through.

Argentina and Holland will go through.

France will go through, but I will say South Korea as a dark horse in that group.

Spain and Ukraine should be OK, but Tunisia and the Saudis will be fun to watch.

Mexico and Portugal look good in their group.

Brazil should have no worries, but I am rooting for Australia to pull a surprise second in this group.

johna says on Jun 7, 2006, 16:57:

South Korea and Tunisia I think you are right on that these are some underdogs to watch. How amazing was South Korea's run last cup? Tunisia is a fast team with a good midfield. I can't wait.

Gomezman5 says on Jun 7, 2006, 18:58:

Kernow...Johna Kernow.....I agree with everything you said. And yes the injuries to the Czechs will make a difference. I feel sorry for them in a way because I like to see teams like that rise. Look at what Romania was, and this time they did not qualify. Portugal has gotten to the point where they are considered a team to be a legitimate team to be reckoned with. For years, even though they had played well, I would be amazed how people never really gave them much credit for being as good as they were....and are.

Kernow and Johna.....remember something, we both were amazed at how well S.korea performed last time. But they were the hosting country. Hosting countries always tend to use that as a springboard to developing a football program that will give them international respect. Look what happened to the US after hosting the games. They were not even on the radar screen or participated in the World Cup until they hosted. OK, S. Korea qualified, but remember, it is much easier to qualify from that conference. As a team, they are fast and very adept to making those quick maneuvers on the field. They are fun to watch. They kind of have a style of their own. I also think that they will be taken more seriously. If it sounds like I'm equivocating, I am. I think the real strength of S.Korea will be put to the test now that they are playing world class teams in a very tough place.....Germany.

With the above said, in the end, I am going to go with Germany to make the Finals.....and maybe win it all. The record of the host country winning when the host country is one of the toughest teams is undeniable. France was not the favorite to win when they won in 98 were they? Host countries win so often. And when the host is Germany....hell, to count them out would be a mistake

johna says on Jun 7, 2006, 19:19:

I thnk that Germany definitely has an advantage with hosting. I lived in S. Korea while the world cup was happening and the mood was incredible, the energy and momentum seemed unstoppable. So the atmosphere is a big contributer, but in my opinion Brazil is the better team. I love Brazil, they truely do make it "the beautiful game". They usually have great ball control and incredible strikers. To me the German game is more muscle and less finess, but they are also great.

Johna.....now that is interesting & airetuPal You lived in S. Korea during the last Cup? Wow, now that had to be an experience of a life time. The one thing I remember, was having to wake up in the middle of the night or early in the morning to see the teams that I wanted to see on Univision. But let me tell you, I could not believe how loud a few of those stadiums were when Korea played!!It was electrifying!! Did you get to go to any of the games???

As to Brazil, I have to agree with you there. Brazil does have a certain finess that about sets the standard as to how the game should be played. But,it just irritates me that with all the teams in the world, Cup after Cup, (at least of late) Brazil is considered the team to beat, and many believed it was a forgone conclussion that they were going to win from the very onset......or even before the first game was played. In fact, that is one of the things my Gringo friends would always say. "Why do you watch these games when everybody says Brazil in going to win." It does take something away from the game. But look at the team captain..Cafu. This guy is incredible. This will be his last Cup, but talking about finess and ball handling ability....man this guy wrote the book.

Airetupal, my feelings about Argentina are always mixed. Any self respecting Colombian, knows about the arrogance these people carry on their shoulders. Beating them is always a good feeling. Remember that elimiantion game when colombia beat them in Buenos Aires?? But, on the other hand, they are a Latin Brothers, and if it comes down to France or Argentina, or Germany and Argentina, I feel I have to pull for them. To me, there is something about hearing those Spanish last names that energize me into supporting them. That is why all the other Latin teams are going to get my support.....no matter who they play.

G5 yes it was amazing being there in Korea at the time. I saw a friendly of the US v. S. Korea and a 1st rounder? of Brazil v. China. That was so much fun. Because we were so close to China alot of Chinese were at the game and a few Brazilians. It was a bizzare meeting of cultures. The Chinese were die hard no matter how many goals Brazil scored. Also the pregame parties were pretty cool. Hot Brazilian people shaking there hips to the drums while curious chinese people looked on and snapped pictures. It was one of the highlights of my life I have to say. I camped at a beach near the stadium with alot of Brazilians also on the beach, GREAT TIME! Some of us walked into town and went to a night club. While we were there I saw Ronaldo, and just nodded my head to him and smiled, I didn't want to bother him by saying hello or anything because I don't really go for all that starstruck crap, but he stuck is drink out to give me a cheers. So I thought that was pretty down to earth. It was a great time, and the tickets were cheap and easy to get. These games weren't on mainland Korea, but an island just south called Jeju. Which is where I was working.
