Mexico's Club America has fallen on hard times recently so when I saw that they were scheduled to take on Chelsea, Inter Milan and AC Milan in a round robin tournament (World Football Challenge) this summer, I figured their presence was just a ploy to get Mexicans to fill the seats in the stands. Surely they had no chance against the likes of these clubs.
Their main problem has been a porous defense that allowed opponents to shoot at will. I remember one game where keeper Memo Ochoa had to make 16 saves to nail down a victory. America's management decided to fill the void by signing Colombian Aquivaldo Mosquera from Sevilla of La Liga. The guy has been worth his weight in gold as America has shocked observers by defeating Inter Milan in PKs (Mosquera making one of the five PKs) and AC Milan 2-1 last night. I had to laugh reading what one Mexican paper said about him:
They were right. You'd think Mosquera had spent his entire playing career with Las Águilas, so vociferous was he in defense of his teammates. He certainly deserved to wear the captain's armband after Salvador Cabanas was subbed out late in the game.
The real test will come on Sunday when America plays Chelsea. Mosquera will have his hands full but it looks like he's more than ready for the challenge.
