Colombian won 9th Tour de France Stage

Hernandez Wins 9th Tour de France Stage

BRIANCON, France -

Juan Mauricio Soler Hernandez of Colombia won Tuesday's ninth stage of the Tour de France, with Michael Rasmussen of Denmark retaining the yellow jersey after the last Alpine stage.

The expected race contenders didn't gain any ground on Rasmussen during the 99.1-mile course from the Val d'Isere ski station to Briancon. But pre-race favorite Alexandre Vinokourov, who is nursing knee injuries from a crash, lost more time against the Dane.

The 24-year-old Colombian, competing in his first Tour for the newcomer Barloworld team, clocked 4 hours, 14 minutes and 24 seconds for the ride featuring three tough climbs, including the fabled Galiber and Iseran passes.

"I'm really happy ... Winning a stage is a dream," Soler Hernandez said.

Spain's Alejandro Valverde was second and Cadel Evans of Australia trailed third, each 38 seconds back.

The last of three Alpine stages dealt a heavy blow to Vinokourov's hopes of a Tour title. The Kazakh rider with Team Astana team had come into the stage 5:23 behind Rasmussen, and lost about 2 more minutes.

"I did what I could. The team worked well again ... and tried to reduce the gap," Vinokourov told France television.

"It was another horrible day for me," he said before breaking into tears.

Overall, Rasmussen is 2:35 ahead of Valverde with Iban Mayo in third, 2:39 back.

Oh, no! Los Latinos .... premier, y segundo.... what will the world think, now???

(Hey, how do the people from Spain feel about being included in the group: 'Latinos'?) I bet they hate that sort of sh*t, eh? Is that proper, or not, to refer to some one from Spain as .... Latino? or, .... another concept that has been thrown around alot on pbh.... ... what?

I'D RATHER BE.........IN COLOMBIA :-))

Spaniards are certainly Latins, as are the French, Italian, Portuguese and even Romanian. The name is due simply to their languages being derived from Latin. The "Latin lover", was usually European, like Valentino in the 30's, or Mastroniani in 70s, or even someone like Antonio Banderas today. So, I think Spaniards definitely consider themselves latins. What they distrust is the Latin credentials of "Sudacas".

The refer to colombian cyclists as "los escarabajos colombianos" because they are so good at climbing steep slopes. It's in the blood.

Yep, they called them "los escarabajos colombianos" A beetle like the one Bufalo filmed in Leticia.
It was interesting to see a close-up of the scarab (minute 01:20 in the video) because it looks like the scarab is trying to challenge the cameraman.

Goin_south, I would say, they probably feel a bit awkward because the term “Latino has been used many times in the states to refer to anyone from Central, the Caribbean and South America. Could we hear a comment from someone from Spain
Jaramillo is also correct in his comment.

He's a rookie and he won one of the most difficult stages, which involves riding up those massive Alps. That's something.

Juan Muricio Soler es un VERRACO, but he's in big trouble. They found traces of AGUA PANELA CON LECHE in his urine and might have to come up with the recipe, cause none of them french chefs how to prepare that dish. LOL

Soler es un duro. Iba a poner que es un "putas", pero luego me malentienden y me acusan de hablar feo del pisco. Viva Soler!

I saw the guy run today. My dad claims that this is his first Tour. If so, he really is "el putas".

BTW. "El putas" is actually a compliment.

Peace,

I remember as a little kid riding around the "sticks" of Colombia, I would see guys riding up incredibly steep mountain roads on bikes that looked like they were held together with wire and "mocos". I always thought they were some really bad mofos. If those guys ever had the type of support and training that the European and North American teams receive, Colombia would own the Tour.

I'd love to see a bit of the tour de France in person one day.

Anyhow I watched some footage of the tour today on TV, including the Soler win. It was great.
Hey, if he can nail the climbs on his first Tour, then who's to say he might not have it in him to nail the time trials and flat runs of future tours... cyclists can be involved for soo many years!
