PBH / colombia (travelguide, pictures) / post |
My impression from some of the posts is that when a Colombian woman and a gringo get serious, she is usually the boss of the relationship. Something about the martiarchal nature of Colombian society, I gather.

dwmte says on May 16, 2005, 15:05: has nothing to do with gringo or colombiano.... the women run the show. the men may be like roosters and crow a lot, but ask ANY colombian who is boss around the house and it will come back, 'mama.'

Crazy Eagle says on May 16, 2005, 18:21: why paisas? Do paisas have a reputation for being bossy? If so, why should this be the case? utopiacowboy says on May 16, 2005, 21:23: Do you want one who wears the pants? Sure, you can find them. If you want one who lets you walk all over her, you can find them too. If you want one who believes in mutual cooperation and respect, you can find one of those too. amber says on May 18, 2005, 11:01: WE WEAR THE PANTS FOR SURE! my mother being colombian and my dad being an irish 'gringo' ive grown up with my mum being the boss of the house and definetly wearing the trousers. Latin women believe they can dominate a gringo everytime, and because of their hot blooded nature and firey temper its often true! its much harder to control a Colombian guy, so when Latinas, in particular Colombianas, find a white boyfriend they make the most of it. ive seen it a hundred times before...so be prepared!

utopiacowboy says on May 18, 2005, 21:48: And the generalizations just keep on coming..... Those fiery Latinas with their meek little pussy-whipped gringos. I don't think any woman would have much respect for a man she could walk all over, Latinas included. Crazy Eagle says on May 19, 2005, 07:38: I see your point, but... I see your point amigo, but there is a fine distinction between being "walked all over" and being secure enough in one's masculinity to let a strong woman take control, at least part of the time. pachovia says on May 19, 2005, 08:09: My gringo ass is the boss! No woman will tell me what to do and she knows it! But to be serious my girl is the boss when it comes to the home, the food, and other womanly things. We both try to treat each other equal but when push comes to shove and we both get mad, she is always the one who comes back to say she is sorry. You guys need to be strong, Colombian woman respects strength more then American women.

Everytime I try to include him by asking his opinion on what we should do, it's always "whatever you want, baby"! When he talks I listen, but he rarely speaks up. he likes me making all the decisions. This way he doesn't have to think much. It works great for us.

Desideria (Moderator) says on May 20, 2005, 13:33: Colombian men are raised up to being bossed by their mothers. My mother-in-law had the total control of the household, but she always denied it smiling sweetly and saying that it was just what her husband wanted and had decided. The balance of power was clear-cut: he made the money and she spent it. She was in charge of the house, the home economics, the education of their children and such, yet she hardly knew how to cook and never understood money. The maid was the queen in the kitchen and decided what they would eat and at what time. Her main job was to get up in the morning to water the flowers on the patio and uncover the bird cages. Crazy Eagle says on May 22, 2005, 16:19: watch the movies Has anyone noticed how latinas are portrayed by Hollywood? Think of that tough latin cop on Third Watch. The muscular female marine in the second Alien flick (a male marine asks her if she has ever been mistaken for a man. Her reply: "No, have you?"). There was a strange film called Walker with Ed Harris, based on a true character who was financed by industry to topple a latin american country. He meets a latina who ends up running the country from behind the scenes, after she tells him that the proper position for gringos is... well, watch the flick.
