Hi: I have a few questions re: weddings in Bogota. I plan on marrying a Colombiana and I am Americano. If we marry in the U.S. on the K-1 we will essentially elope, i.e. go to Vegas by ourselves and get married. This will save a huge amount in traditional wedding costs, etc. Anybody think this would be offensive to a upper-class woman? Alternatively, we could possibly get married in Bogota. How much would a nice but not extravagant full wedding cost here in dollars? Any insight would be appreciated. I know the average cost of a wedding in the states is now well over $20,000. It must be much less in Bogota. Also out of curiosity, who pays for the traditional wedding in Colombia? Is it split up like in the U.S. Would the Americano be expected to pay for everything there?

utopiacowboy says on Aug 6, 2004, 08:00: You could have a heckuva wedding in Colombia for one tenth the cost. We had the whole shebang, live music, hundreds of flowers, open bar, dinner, limo, video and photographer, dresses handmade by a seamstress.... Who pays? Who's got the plata? My wife paid for some items but I paid for most of it. Best thing I ever did other than marrying her. She shows her wedding pictures to EVERYONE! For my fiancee, this is a GRAND event for her and her family. My theory is, big wedding in Colombia and small wedding in States. Just like above from UC,

Still a bargain but not the fire sale it was a year ago. The video's a blast, SeattleJames, I got it copied to DVD - it's hilarious. Elmo would love it even though there are no donkeys in it. juanalejo says on Aug 6, 2004, 11:05: upper class wedding If your fiance is really upper class, you might be in for a treat as the tradition says that the bride´s wife pays everything, except for the costs of the church including decoration of it, but that will not run over 300 or 400 dollars. Now if the wife´s family can not afford what the she wants then it is up to you two to decide.

We had, bilingual father for teh ceromony at church, live music, hundreds of flowers, open bar, dinner, limo, video and photographer, .... My husband and I share cost around US$10.000 total, that's a good way to go. Good luck in your marriage.

utopiacowboy says on Aug 11, 2004, 09:27: SeattleJames, I just wore a dark suit for my wedding but it would have been very easy to rent a tux at any one of the innumerable places that rent suits and tuxedos. LarsBrink says on Aug 12, 2004, 02:19: Not to worry... The carnival was an extra touch that the lady from the finca came up with to get the party started since it was a 80/20 Colombian/European guest combination. It was to make sure that the Danes danced as well and it worked :-) ~ Lars Brink ~ www.colombia.dk ~ 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
