Colombian Valentine's Day?

I was told by a friend that Colombianos celebrate a holiday similar to our Valentine's Day. Is this true? If so, when is it observed? I have sometime in September in my head, is this correct?
Thanks

"El Dia de Amor y Amistad" is in September. My Colombian wife expects me to celebrate both that and Valentines Day.

Well, as far as I know there`s no "official" date for our celebration. But tradition will establish the second weekend in September.

I also found this in wikipedia, but there's no reference at all from where did they collect that info:

"Particularmente en Colombia, por motivos comerciales, esta fiesta se celebra el tercer fin de semana de septiembre y se conoce como Día del Amor y la Amistad."

I would recommend to stay alert on the media. From the first day in September you`ll see tons of ads about the day.

This is an article I found about the celebration in 2005.

The prices don't seem all that outrageous on the Pensil site. I use a local florist in Colombia which is cheaper, but that seems like a pretty decent deal.

I was in Colombia last year during Día del Amor y la Amistad and I thought it was celebrated on Saturday (so the folks at the office told us). Although it seemed like it started on Friday in the office (la Amistad). I just remember that my collegue and I ordered room service on Saturday night instead of attempting to get a table at a restaurant among all of the couples. I would appreciate it if someone posted the date again as we get closer....gee whiz....Sept is only a month away!

Yeay, yep and yes! Let me tell you know. For all you GRINGOS ESTUPIDOS... if you start acknowledging both Valentine Days... ours, and theirs... EEUU, y Colombia (not to be confused, because BOTH COULD BE/COULD HAVE BEEN CALLED ...'MERICA!).... then you are jus going 2 B victimized again and again.. and you know CHRISTMAS IS ALMOST ALREADY HERE AGAIN... Chris Gringo... so, if you are new with a Colombian Love, and Short on Bucks... (hell, no! Not Me... keep borrowing money until the day YA DIE!).... then... DON'T ACKOWLEDGE VALENTINE'S DAY ON BOTH SIDES.... ASK SU COLOMBIANITA..... '''''''''WHEN IS VALENTINE DAY"""" .. and see what she says.

is she says both September and February..... SHE'S ALREADY .... COMO Y IGUAL UNA GRINGA..... good luck and BROKEN HEARTS AND ... BLOODY GOOD HEARTS AND ALL THAT CHIT.

I hardly think that making my wife happy with a bouquet of roses and a greeting card twice a year counts as being victimized.

Now if your woman is demanding expensive gifts for these occasions, then you might want to reevaluate your woman, regardless of nationality.

Hey GS....don't go reading into "my colleague". That's all it was...a co-worker from the US. Perfectly innocent.

Don't you have MS Office Outlook or some sort of calendar software to remind you when important dates are due? If you have MS Office Outlook, you can set it up to remind you of both dates until the end of time. I will do that now since I have some friends in Colombia who I'd like to send gifts on both dates.

Ahh GS...me? troll? just not creative enough for that man! i'm way too analytical to be able to make stuff up. and believe me....if you knew my co-worker (a slightly overweight puerto rican in his 50's), you'd know there would be no attraction there! hmmm...now that i think about it, i can't think of a single guy in my department that is even remotely attractive.

orestedd - that's where i'm confused....is it celebrated on saturday? that's the impression i was getting. people told us that it would be pretty difficult to get into a restaurant on saturday night in barranquilla (i.e., like going out on valentine's day). and on friday night we were at the mall in bogota and there seemed to be lots of people out buying last-minute gifts.
