Colombian Tamales

I´m searching the web for a recipe of the tamales that are sell in the Atlantic Coast of Colombia in the departments of Cartagena, Santa Marta and Barranquilla, this tamales are made of rice, meat and banana leaves, (not from maíz dough) but nobody seem to have this recipe, please people from the coast, I´ll be so thankful if someone, anybody could write a recipe about this kind of tamales. I´m from Mexico and when I was a kid, we lived in Santa Marta, and I remember this wonderful food that we ate on weekends on our way to the beach, I would like to have the opportunity of taste them again. Thanks.

I've got a recipe at home, I'll get it for you later if I can find it. By the way, Cartagena, Santa Marta and Barranquilla are not on the Atlantic Coast :-)

Somewhat on topic - is the custom of putting a slice of white cheese in the hot chocolate a nationwide thing?

Dakota, have you tried tamales Tolimenses? Riquisimos and it is easier to get the recipe for those...

Tinto, in Bogotá we do that not only with chocolate but also with tinto and it doesn't taste very good either way...

Now that you've got a recipe for the rice tamale you should really try el tamal vallecaucano, the pork/chicken variety from Cali and Valle. IMVHO it's the absolute number ONE tamal in Colombia., and I have eaten the rice tamales from Tolima and the Caribbean too. Another delicious tamal is the one from Popayán and Cauca, with pipián, peanut butter sauce.

Cheers,

Desi
When I was in Cali there was a lady who made them and so everyone gave her their order and she brought it to the house, I only ordered one, I regretted it so much! I too prefer it to the tolimense...

Desi is absolutely correct...the best tamals are the pork/chicken ones in Cali. Rice does not belong in Colombian tamals. Thank god my wife learned to make those tamals from family members and makes them every couple of months and we freeze them. We also are fortunate enough to have a great Colombian (Cali cooking) restaurant in Philly called La Fonda Colombiana where the owner Maria makes them a couple of times a year and i think they might even be better than my wifes. mmmmmmm getting hungry just thinking about them.
