There have been so many articles published that I cannot keep up with them all as Colombia continues to produce top notch researchers and scientists in both pure and applied sciences.
Colombians are among the world's BEST researchers and scientists and the proof appears in their publications in world class journals in many different disciplines.
For example, here is a recent article by Juan Manuel Anaya of the Unidad de Biología Celular e Inmunogenética, Corporación para Investigaciones Biológicas (Universidad del Rosario in Medellín) who is published in an influential tier one medical journal:
"Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic inflammatory disease in which extra-articular involvement is not uncommon. Cardiac compromise may be frequent, although most often, it is clinically silent. Herein, two cases of RA-related endocarditis, one of which required valve replacement, are described. Etanercept was useful in controlling the articular and extra-articular RA compromise in both cases." [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

platano says on Jul 26, 2006, 12:10: Gringodiego, it is not propaganda... But I wouldn't be surprised if it is a conspiracy by Alvaro Uribe to achieve excellence in all things. Alvaro is leading Colombia to new heights and has excellent followers.

Blue says on Jul 26, 2006, 17:58: Platano I'm sure you've heard of Julio Garavito a Colombian astronomer who has a significant crater on the moon named after him. I'm taking an astrophysics class in Berkeley this summer and his crater was mentioned in reference to another crater and an exchange student from Venezuela let the class know his origins and significance in Colombia science.

platano says on Jul 26, 2006, 18:56: blue, Of course! Everyone should be familiar with Julio Garavito Armero, or at least anyone who has ever used a 20 thousand peso bill (that's most Colombians) since his face appears on the 20 thousand peso "billete". The Escuela Colombiana de Ingeniería Julio Garavito was also founded to honor him. Another instance of a brilliant Colombian scientist who has contributed to the world.

lala96 says on Jul 27, 2006, 12:58: Gringodiego why do you say that? Just wanted to know if there is any basis in saying that Alvaro Uribe has a propaganda machine? I don't live in Colombia so don't know what is happening in politics at the national level. I do know that there are many Colombian scientist in and outside Colombia doing great work. Many times they are not recognized because they work for major institutions who take all the credit. one thing I do know is that the Colombian scientist working inside Colombia deserve major praise they conduct major research with very little resources which cannot be compared with conducting reaserch in the US where scientist have better resources (not the best) than colombian institutions. The US isn't the only country that has had great scientific discoveries. The US is very good at recruiting great scientist from other nations like Colombia to conduct reaserch in the US. I say this because i work in the health arena, in the area of research and many of my colleagues are from other nations, most Latin americans working in my research area are Colombians recruited from Universities in Colombia. Being Colombian-American myself this makes me very proud. lala96 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

lala96 says on Jul 28, 2006, 09:37: I don't understand ... I was asking why you would make such comments in neither post you give an answer. Do you know specifically that Uribe's cabinet promotes this propaganda? I was interested in learning what you know not promoting any politician. I don't know colombianoX or any of these guys here. I was just interested in the subject and can attest to the accuracy that the rest of you don't seem to believe. Usually when someone publishes an article the scientists place of birth isn't advertised. Also, when you publish with an institution backing you, the research you conduct belongs to the institution, pharmaceutical, or government you work for, not to you. lala96 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
