Colombian Resumes

Hello, I am planning to go to Colombia in August and want to start applying for jobs teaching English pretty soon. In Colombia do they use the North American system of resumes or the European system of CV's?

The Colombian system, perhaps? European or North american? Well...?
Maybe, they use the South American system? Or the Colombian system?

Sorry about the irony. :-)

It's just that many people seem to think that countries outside North America and Europe are not independent states. And that this kind of question is rampant in this forum.

Actually I don't know the answer to your question. But I suspect you can use either as long as your application is clear and readable and you have the right qualifications

the Colombian resume is different I am still trying to figure out all the differences. First of all you include all your personal data that is illegal to even ask in an interview in the USA and many European countries. A current photo is also mandatory, especially if you are female. Oh, as female be prepared to describe your marriage and family plans, and when you will be pregnant or if you already are.

I would recommend digging up a resume book from the 50s in an antique book store, that should come faily close to your needs. Maybe the book should be dated 1850 and from Spain or UK.

A long cover letter is expected, and everything must be in Spanish, a copy in English and your mother language can be added. References should also be included with details on who they are.

Good luck ... and no, I am not joking. As teacher you might have it easier, but this is what I am experiencing for mid-management level employment. The same is required by most other LA countries as well.

Hoja de Vida The Hoja de Vida should not be more than 2 pages long, it should include only your name, contact numbers, personal profile, your last two or three jobs maximum, they should be written in order from last to first job, a brief description of what you had to do in your job and a few goals you achieved within this job. Then the education you have had including the non formal education such as seminars, workshops etc that are relevant for the job that you are applying for. It should have a cover letter which is more personal and directed to the person you know is interviewing you (if you know his/her name) if not to the company/institution with a brief statement of what you want to do. No personal details, no photograph, but do have it handy as if they decide to hire you they might want your details and you should have them ready.
