Bogota, Colombia

Colombia's main rebel force denied claims that a laptop recovered in a raid that killed one of its top leaders proves it gets support from the leftist governments in Venezuela and Ecuador, according to reports Wednesday.

In a statement delivered to the Venezuelan government-funded channel Telesur, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, argued the computer could not have survived the bombing of one of its camps in Ecuador that killed its spokesman Raul Reyes and 23 others.

In a separate statement, the rebels named the replacement for one of two recently slain leaders on their ruling seven-man junta.

Colombian officials did not immediately return telephones calls seeking comment.

The cross-border attack set off the worst Latin American diplomatic crisis in decades as Ecuador and Venezuela withdrew their ambassadors. After much heated rhetoric, the week-long dispute was finally resolved in a meeting of Latin American heads of state.

The Colombian government says that during the raid it recovered three laptops belonging to Reyes.

Information on one of the computers indicates the FARC was supposed to receive $300 million from the Venezuelan government, had sought to purchase uranium and gave money to the 2006 presidential campaign of Ecuador's leader, Rafael Correa, Colombia alleges.

The statement released Wednesday denied both claims, saying the FARC does not receive money from any foreign government or group with the exception of an already known transfer of funds made by a Danish activist group.

Another release, dated March 8 and also delivered to Telesur, said the guerrilla known as Mauricio Jaramillo, also known as "The Doctor," will become part of the FARC's ruling Secretariat, replacing Ivan Rios, who was killed earlier this month.

Little is known of Jaramillo. Colombian media have reported that Jaramillo is the personal physician to the FARC's maximum leader, Manuel "Sureshot" Marulanda.

Who could believe to a group of terrorists? Obviously, Chavez & Correa already talked to their "camaradas" to deny everything. What ever is the information contained in the laptops about the link between Chavez, Correa and Farc will put them in a serious troubles.

This is just spanglish, please do not correct me

Of course, is total BS.

Hopefully it will nail the Three Stooges, and maybe more.

Once more, the FARC over-denies. If they simply denied the validity of the information, that would be one thing, but the argument they offer--that there's no way the laptops could have survived the bombing--is transparently bogus.

The best thing is this: There's no way that $300 million was given to the FARC in unmarked $100 bills. If it was done, it went through the banking system. And there's very little that can't be unraveled in the world of international banking, especially if you have a laptop with account information.

How did the Colombian Gov/Army... figure out his password, to get into the computers?
and,... I'm wondering too, at this point... how did the computers survive the fires?

'what does it mean, when one of you (colombians) tell another: YOU WERE NOT/ARE NOT. 'COLOMBIAN ENOUGH'?? jejeje..a mixture, I think, of stupidity mixed with a false sense of arrogance.. How 'colombian' do you have to be? to be 'colombian enough

I used one of these before I retired, was pretty much waterproof, could withstand a 6' fall and we had videos of a Hum-vie driving over one:

The hard drives are encased in gel, making them very shock resistant.

Remember, GS, the entire computer doesn't need to survive, just the hard drive. And hard drives are pretty damn tough. And if you're a FARC commander living in the jungle, I'm guessing you keep your computers pretty well protected, otherwise the elements alone would make them stop working in short order.

It terms of cracking passwords, etc, that stuff is child's play to any decent intelligence service, and there are certainly a few of those interested in Reyes' data.

I personally liked this part of the article...

"...In a statement delivered to the Venezuelan government-funded channel Telesur..." Okay, isn't this Chavez controled TV station....

Isn't anything on this TV stationed pretty muched sensored and it's all about how Chavez is god and stuff....

It is not like the entire camp was bombarded to shreds.

The thing was huge and the dorms were definitely crushed, it seems, but other areas survived pretty much intact and so did several other pieces of equipment. Including weaponry which can be seen in photos taken by the Ecuadorian authorities.

And btw, once again...Interpol is checking things out. They are expected to end their work before the end of April, so we will see what they have to say about the PCs by then.

Interpol will not say that the specific allegations and statements are real or not...but it will talk about the PCs and the circumstances surrounding their existence and contents.

okay, thanx for setting me straight... hollywood... but... who knows if Uribe then isn't just making all this stuff up? I like the guy, but.. it's apparent, he and his administration is as corrupt as the next government... ... yeah. ... so, how would anyone know he/they haven't made all this up??? Whos checking? where are the checks and balances???

IT COULD BE ANOTHER CONSPIRACY, RIGHT GRINGOLOID?

What about the money found in Costa Rica-is that fake?

Did Uribe plant a safe full of US cash on innocent Ticos?

Mr. Hollywood says on Mar 26, 2008, 21:00:

Sam is right. The proof is in the pudding. If the computer data is valid, you'll see a number of serious blows struck against the FARC in short order. Oh, wait, we already have.

The best will be when their illicit banking system is taken down and their assets seized.
