Colombian president's ally arrested

BOGOTA (AP) — Colombian authorities have arrested a senator closely allied with President Alvaro Uribe for alleged collusion with illegal far-right militias.

Sen. Zulema Jattin had been under Supreme Court investigation for allegedly benefitting politically from ties with militia boss Rodrigo Tovar.

Tovar was one of 14 warlords extradited to the United States a year ago on drug-trafficking charges.

The 39-year-old Jattin called her arrest a "kidnapping" by the Supreme Court.

Uribe has been sharply at odds with the court. Since 2006 it has ordered the arrest of more than 30 lawmakers — chiefly Uribe allies — for alleged cooperation with the so-called paramilitaries.

Prosecutors blame the illegal militias for at least 10,000 murders.

I read in the Tiempo article which mentioned this that Eleonora Pineda, another politician from Cordoba who was accused of parapolitica, is already out of prison. Do you know how long the parapolitica prison sentences are? It doesn't sound like very long, given the severity of the crime.
