do women typically change their last name to match their mates when getting married in colombia?

The women in my wife's family never changed their name upon marriage and they insist that this is the Colombian custom. Opinions seem to differ about this however. The children take the father's last name first and the mother's last name second but customarily just use the father's last name. For example Maria Martinez Herrera marries Rafael Ramirez Romero - their child is Sara Ramirez Martinez but would normally just go by Sara Ramirez. This way her name corresponded with all her Colombian documents which use both of her last names. We did not encounter any problems.
