Colombian Literature

So we all know Gabo but who are the other Colombian authors that I should be reading?

I love reading foreign literature as a means to understand a country and its culture. I first went to Colombia after reading Marquez and naturally fell in love with the place.

Which other Colombian authors and/or other South american authors do you recommend reading? Any recommendations would be very much welcome.

From South America I've read Borges (which was perhaps too heavy), Neruda (which I loved) and Vargas Llosa (which I wasn't too overwhelmed by but have only read one novel).

Any ideas?

A must read is Killing Pablo so you can understand the transition this country has been through in the past decade.

There are also several recommended at www.medellintravelguide.com/medellin_books.html

Everything from cooking, birds to understanding the 4 decades old civi war that has gripped Colombia.

The historical novel "Ursua" by William Ospina is quite good. It relates the story of a lesser known conquistador. Ospina is a fairly well known Colombian poet and also has several books of poetry available.

I've just started reading a few books by Laura Restrepo which seem to do an interesting picture of life in Bogota. I just read the Angel of Gallilea and am starting to read The Dark Bride.

I also just read a book called Kidnapped - 377 Days in Captivity about a girl who was kidnapped by the ELN in 2000.. It was a little slow, but also interesting.

Other Latin American authors I really like are Isabel Allende and Julia Alvarez (although she actually writes in English).

All of these books I've read have been translations - Im still on more of like a 4th grade reading level in Spanish. If anyone can recommend good books on that level, Im interested!

The Mejicano Juan Rulfo is a must. Maybe the most influential writer of the las part of the XX century in latinoamerica. Pedro Paramo and El llano en llamas are his main (short) works.

Estoy leyendo "La Casa..." de Isabel Allende en este momento (pero solamente empece anoche entonces tengo mucho mas leer!). Y mi proximo libro sera Jorge Isaac porque a mi me parece exactamente el tipo de libro que estoy buscando.

Gracias por todo sus sugerencias! En verdad creo que puedo conocer un pais mejor mientras leyendo historias de sus escritores.

Pero si recordan de cualquiera otra titular cuentame!

Two good novels, I think you would like as they relate to Colombians way of life:

"El Penultimo Sueno" by Angela Becerra

"Delirio" by Laura Restrepo ( this one won the Premio Alfaguara de Novela in 2004)

Cheers
