Thanks Zydeco,

Thanks for the information, I never would have thought Barnes and Nobles would have carried so many books from Colombia.

Read a little bit !!! The rules

This site brings together a large community of people with an interest in Colombia. When you write things, follow these two simple rules: (adapted from webdesign-l policies)

Be respectful of others’ sensitivities and backgrounds.

There is a wide range of cultures represented on this site. What might pass for “refreshingly direct in your hometown may be horribly rude to someone from another state or nation.

Lionheart says on Jan 25, 2005, 18:27:

yes you are correct what you wrote is very rude and not acceptable, and those words are rude in any culture I know of, and definitely not refreshingly direct.

Plus, you didn't copy all of the rules, very conviniently. You did not copy the basic 2 rules:

When you write things, follow these two simple rules: (adapted from webdesign-l policies)

No personal attacks.
Stay on topic (Colombia).

If you don't follow the rules your post may be deleted or you may be banned from posting.

Something else .... Lionheart,

Stop threatening me on being banned....

People should be aware that there are Proud Colombian People around, so take care of what you're posting !!

Lionheart says on Jan 25, 2005, 18:43:

so? That doesn't give you the right to use cuss words and bad language to insult somebody in any case.

I also see nothing offensive in his suggestion. I also do not see him mentioning your name or addressing you directly. You might want to check your attitude and give better suggestions instead. That would be a better thing for everybody here. After all, many want to learn more about Colombia and not deal with attitudes that give Colombia a bad taste.

Well, if careless people writing that kind of dumb comments feels Dissapointed by my reply, that is Ok for me... My suggestion: Take care of your actions, and accept the consequences....

Aldo,

I agree with Lionheart and also think that you went overboard by using profanity. Sólo haces quedar mal a los colombianos siendo grosero!
There are many ways to say what you meant without having had to resort to obscenities.

Aldo, I think you are the typical (whatever word you like) that wants people to respect you but will not show the same respect in return. There are probably more gringos on this site than Colombians. Maybe you are the one who should be careful about what you post.

Why do you have such a problem with the US? Is someone in your family cleaning a toilet 12 hours a day after they thought they could come here and own a huge house and have 2 cars because they saw that in the movies?

my feelings as well but there is still a chance now to make this thread useful, I can't recall many questions or thoughts on Colombian literature in PBH at all.

I could ask about which Colombian authors to read, but I will hold off on that until I can read them in Spanish. I don't think any translation can do an author justice. I read the German classics in German for example, when I attempted to read an English translation I tossed it. Or, George Bernhard Shaw in German is really horrible, trust me.

I would like recommendations on history books, especially about the pre-colombian times (I think that is what the anchient history is called.) I am not impressed with what I find on the internet.

George Bernard Schmitt ? Lionheart -

I wouldn't like to try Herman Hesse "The Glass Bead Game" in German - but then I don't speak German !!

Your so right though, if you can get through "100 Years" in Spanish its infinitely more rewarding - the translation loses so much of the atmosphere...

"How the Conquistadores did for the Cogis et al - an Independent Assessment" - Pious III (out of print)

but seriously not - There's an ancient travelogue describing a crossing of Los Llanos I've read about and I've been waiting ages for my copy of Matt Rendell "Kings of the Mountains: How Colombia's Cycling Heroes Changed Their Nation's History"

what a coincidence It was Herman Hesse's "The Glass Bead Game" I tried reading in English ... I tossed it ... no comparison to the German "Das Glasperlenspiel".

I believe only the original language of the author can really reflect the author's intention, since the language is part of the cultural background.

I wish my parents had supported me to learn more languages as a kid ... now at my age I am having one hell of a time.

Back to the subject, Libreria Nacional seems to be the biggest bookstore chain here, maybe they sell via the net.
