Colombian Justice: Judge Orders Early Release for Killer of Football Player

The name of Andres Escobar probably does not mean much to most readers on this site. But he was one of Colombia's football stars that was fortunate enough to represent Colombia in the 1994 World Cup. He. He was also the man who, by accident, managed to score a goal against his own team. Upon his return to Colombia, he was shot dead while dining in a restaurant for the his mishap. Colombia suffered and mourned. It was also another black eye on the country as a whole because the killing was ostensibly ordered by a drug dealers, which were themselves known to have more than just a mere subtle influence on who represented the team.

11 years later, a judge, has decided that the killer, Humberto Munoz, is entitled to be released early due to his "good behavior and study habits." The original sentence was 43 years. The name of the judge that ordered Munoz's release was not released due to "security concerns."

No matter how you look at it, what you have here is a very sad commentary about how things in Colombia, have really not changed all that much. It is also indicative of how it is more probably than not, that the killing was ordered by drug traffickers, and that these same individuals used their influence to obtain an early release order from a judge who did not even have the courage to identify himself for making such an absurd order.

I don't think I would identify myself if I was the judge either!

Very sad day indeed that this killer is being released with such a light sentence.

Long time Not that I agree with his release, but by American standards, eleven years is a long time in a COLOMBIAN prison.

American prisons are a cake walk, cable TV, air conditioning, great medical care, good food 3 times a day, free gym & basket ball court, free weight room ect. Now go to a "Federal Prison" and at some places they have mini gold courses, tennis courts ect.

Just a thought.
