My personal favorite Is the Traffic Mime. I wish more big cities would use innovative things like that.

On the other hand, maybe more lives would be saved if Colombians would discover the seatbelt and the child seat.

other than the malaria vaccine, I can't think of any. Yes, a few years ago I saw a newspaper article of a canguroo-type incubator for premature babies developed in Colombia, but I have no further info on it.

My favorite Colombian inventions are the piedra del rio and the batea.

platano... nice article...thanks for sharing.

i want to thank the general inventiveness of colombians in their every day life.

example. (s) using stacked sheets of newspaper to make oil-seal gaskets for large, industrial temkin rearends (differential) outter hubs. smart.

if a kitchen appliance is amiss, wont work...colombians don't toss it out, they fix it. anything and everything. even down to rewinding the armatures in the appliance motors.

electrical harnesses in cars. knowing full well that a complete new wiring harness for a car is not only not available, it can't even be ordered. they start from zero, slowly isolate the shortage and repair out to original integrity. they will sit and work through the night just to get it done.

i know these are just a couple, but i'll bet if those of you who have lived in colombia, think back, you, too, will remember incidents where you noted these colombians inventiveness at work. basically nothing of value is thrown out in colombia. trash hawks or dumpster divers in colombia survive on sparce, unpleasant cast offs. it's a tough life for the lowest levels of the poor...those living in land fills and eating out of them as well...raw poverty.

Colombian inventions? Here we go:

Thankyou all I feel I know more now about Colombia than I ever have.

Non of the guys in my town could think of those listed above.

Alba - Took me a while to get back as Ive been taking a tour group of 15 around Santander for the past few days and before that I took a nice holiday in Salento.

I did make the post more because I knew It would lead to comedy value more than anything else.

Anyway Back to the tour, Last day, Hoorah

Serious Colombian inventions It's hard to find a more valuable invention than the HEART PACE MAKER (MARCAPASOS). Dr. Jorge Reynolds, the only engineer accepted as a full member of the Colombian National Academy de Medicine. If you look in www.Google.com for JORGE REYNOLDS you'll get over 300.000 results, which gives you an idea about his importance.

Here's a brief (not complete) resume about him:

The Changua with Calado Yes. The delicious Changua with calado, somethimes with a fried egg or 2, sometimes with cilantro, sometimes even with an empanada. The official breakfast of Colombian truckdrivers. Somebody should patent it and start exporting it!! We have to let the world taste it. No more Corn Flakes, no more French Toast, no more pancakes, no more tea and cookies for breakfast. From now on, just changua with calado as main dish. May be one agua de panela (water of panela) as accompaniment.

Here the recipe:
