elmodefoque,
I applaud you for your honesty. Too many Colombians have decided to plant their heads up Uribe's ass that they can't see the real Colombia, attacking anyone who posts anything negative [true] about life in Colombia.

I'm beginning to better understand why every Colombian I meet warns me against trusting other Colombians. It's sad, but they say it's for my own safety and protection.

The strong peso is doing nothing to benefit the many poor Colombianos.. The extreme poverty needs to be addressed, especially for those displaced from their homes. All those fancy new condos do nothing to benefit the average hard-working Colombian.

I wish I was there with you right now!

Let's see. The average GDP per capita is about $8k USD in Colombia. in the US, $42K, roughly? Globalized trade=Globalized prices. Rubito- Nobody is saying that the AVERAGE COLOMBIAN is terribly off, but with a poverty rate of 48%,rampant underemployment, and inflation rising in Colombia, I would say that a significant portion of Colombians are having a tough go of it...

Now, Hotmail and gmail accounts are free... all you need is ACCESS to a computer, not own one. Most have cell phones. Also very cheap or free. You just have to buy the minutes.

The arguement lays in housing and other bread and butter issues, not cell phones and email accounts.

Colombia is getting better, in the long run.. Economic change takes time, and where Colombia was in the 1990s, I would say life is better for the AVERAGE COLOMBIAN, from what I understand.

From the sounds of it, a lot of Colombians are just plain sick of FARC, the paramilitaries, and Narco trafficking, and want to get on with their lives as citizens in the global economy.

I would actually like to see more investment between the US and Colombia, along with other central and south american countries. I think, for the common good of the region, and to compete with India and China, it would be great to regionalize our economies. This hemisphere has a lot of great resources and, i think, we can compete sucessfully with the rest of the world.

How much has the American economy been hurt by American investment THERE? How has NAFTA made the average Mexican better? Why are the Mexicans still running north 15 years after NAFTA? Carlos Slim, Mexican, has gotten filthy rich off of NAFTA! What makes one think any of this US investment in Colombia will help a majority of Colombia's people? How much of this foreign investment will build new schools for those FARC kids in the pictures in the post above? Somebody all ready rich in north Bogota will get even richer? I dunno...

Sanandressi-All I am saying is that with globalization, and the flooding of the US market with Chinese and Indian made goods, I would rather see the shelves in our stores stocked with north and south american goods..

I agree, NAFTA sucks, It was a poorly thought out treaty. The problem with Mexico workers flooding the US isn't NAFTA, but a government that refuses to promote responsible economic development, plus they are having their share of narco battles that are reeking havoc with their economy.

Bottom line, I would rather see the Americas work together, and invest in each other, than the USD heading to China and India..WE ALL HAVE A LOT MORE TO GAIN BY MAKING OUR OWN HEMISPHERE ECONOMICALLY SOUND.

If you see someone eating a lot of rice and beans in Colombia it's usually by CHOICE. It's a cultural thing, people have this silly idea that rice is healthy. There's actually a city-wide campaign in Bogota to get people to eat less starches and more fruits and veggies and meats and fish."

This may well be the case in Bogota, but it is NOT the case in Medellin.

"Estrato 2-3 Colombian eats whatever the fuck they want WHEN they want it"

Your overall statement is an absolute JOKE!

You obviously know nothing of what you spew here. Again, I spend my time in those barrios and believe you me, whenever I'm invited over for a meal, they send out a kid to buy meat and a few eggs, in order to feed me. This has happened on many occasions, to which I told my guest there was no need for them to treat me special, I will eat whatever they have for themselves, which is usually a bowl of RICE and BEANS! You must hang out with rich Colombians in Bogota, lucky you.

"It's a cultural thing, people have this silly idea that rice is healthy."

NO, rice is more affordable than many other foods, and it fills up your poor belly,

Why do so many Colombians eat "el sobrado" if they can afford to eat whatever the fuck they want as you state?

Whenever I leave anything on my plate, someone immediately picks up my leftovers and starts eating, what they don't finish, they pass it along to the next person. This is a very common practice in Colombia. I have had complete strangers eat my leftovers using the same fork/spoon on my plate. It took me awhile to get used to this, but it is what it is. This practice also happens with my drinks, be it soda, beer, water, or juice.

i agree with medellin traveller it is a joke, i seen lots of estrato 2 even 3 families that can't afford to eat meat every day maybe just once a week and the cheapest thing they can get is either menudencias or bofe.. because lean meat, chicken the parts that most of you eat in the USA and fish are expensive....and don't tell me about fruits unless is guayaba which is one of the cheapest.. Jesus i have seen friends who lives in estrato 2 and they have rice or beans or eggs because is the cheapes, even cheese is a luxury and most of them have agua de panela instead of coke or fruit juice

The real average Colombian wishes they could afford to eat like and estrata 2/3 family from Bogota or Medellin -- which is certainly not that well, and no where near what Rubito alleges.

For all the economic boom that's going on in parts of the big cities, Colombia has a whole remains a country where much of the population lives in poverty/extreme poverty. This is the case in most of latin america.

There is poverty in Colombia no doubt about it. But there are many homeless who don´t like to work and always go from restaurant to restarurant looking for leftovers, these homeless are lazy and don´t like to move a finger in order to earn to pay for their food and a roof to sleep under.

Once I told some one not to give money to homeless people because they might used it for drugs or glue to inhale, she said if that makes them happy then let it be.

rubito says,'5) Here is where the rice comment came from. The physiotherapist works with these shut-ins and she is AMAZED how people BITCH AND WHINE about the fact that the meals they are given contain proper portions of meat and veg and a REASONABLE amount of rice. Some of these ungrateful fucking assholes COMPLAIN because they don't want the veg and they want a MOUNTAIN of rice. Even though this would be cheaper to do, the municipal government is REALLY trying to educate these fucking troglodytes about nutrition and serves them balanced HEALTHY meals. But some people are so fucking dumb they just DONT GET IT. Remember this is in ESTRATO 1 here. So think about THAT next time you get all sloppy and sentimental over the poor "starving" hordes."

Haha... Sorry, but I personally do not eat meals with "healthy" being the utmost importance. I eat what I like to eat, 'cause the tastebuds love the taste, even if it's a big greasy double bacon burger. So, how can you tell people what they should be eating? I don't think you would like it if I told you what to eat. So I can completey understand if others feel the same way, even if the food is free.

"To sum up, I feel this kind of sappy misplaced sympathy for Colombians to be condescending, rude, and just generally ridiculous."

I was just reporting the facts, from my experience. No one is feeling sorry for these people. I sure am not. They are happy people living life the best they can, even if they have to eat others sobrado.

It's definitely not as bad as what I saw happening in Afghanistan recently.

Those of us who are lucky to live a modest life, should be very damn happy and grateful that we can eat what we want, when we want, even if it's a greasy double bacon burger.

The poor people in American have nothing to complain about, they have it good here.

My wife's cousins in Villavo fixed lunch for us once. It was lentils and rice. The average lunch my mother in law fixed was rice, with platano, papas, and sometimes a piece of chicken. Soup was very common. Usually a chicken broth with papas and some veggies. Sometimes spinach soup. Always with rice. The typical drink was limonada.

Whoah..whata thread...Love the pics Robbi and webman ;))) Webman - where were yours taken BTW?

MT - There was a lot of bantor....not trying to cause a problem here, but this comment you said Rubito made? (notice I edited it to be more lady like ;)
"the average Estrato 2-3 Colombian eats whatever the *** they want WHEN they want it. They have an EASIER time eating a decent healthy variety of food than their US counterparts. If you see someone eating a lot of rice and beans in Colombia it's usually by CHOICE. It's a cultural thing, people have this silly idea that rice is healthy. There's actually a city-wide campaign in Bogota to get people to eat less starches and more fruits and veggies and meats and fish."

I know this to be true in Bogota. I cannot speak for any other area, but I cooked for a Rolo (what a friggin term, anyways) and I can say this comment IS true from what Rubito says, I would not discredit him so quickly ;))

Anyhoo...I need to turn the steaks

jajaja...I like how you emphasize "safe" - I recall being reprimanded daily to ensure all doors and windows are locked (in smalltown low to no crime USA), because "if we were in Bogota no telling what would happen".
And on hot days, when I opened the door and had only a screen for the air to ventilate...OHHHH NO! ....it made my counterpart so agitiated...(even though he knew it was safe) I had to close the door to relax him.

So I completely understand the word "safe" in Bogota ;))

Cerealkiller says on Jun 15, 2008, 08:23:

I don't think I've ever visited any household in which people's diets are based almost exclusively on Rice and Beans. Perhaps in Antioquia, certainly not in Bogota. Poorer people don't have the same thing to eat everyday that is ridiculous. That said, the food people eat is definitely not as refined and full of nutrients as that of more affluent neighborhoods. A few common things to find in any estrato 2 or 3 is sopa de arroz, carne mechada, pasta mixed with rice, tons of bread, lentils, cuchuco de maiz, papa salada, salads mixed with mayo, eggs, tinned tuna, agua de panela, mazamorra, some chicken (rarely chicken breast)...And if you happen to be in some small town like tabio, cota etc etc. People have chickens in their backyard, grow onion, potatoes and peas...Certainly not the distinguished dishes you'd find at Leo Cocina y Cava, but IMO poor people in Colombia, including people in rural areas (not the absolutely miserable) probably have more food options than in many other countries.
In regards to leftovers, I have never seen anyone eating my left overs, ever. I haven't had much experience with the urban poor, but I've had more than plenty with the rural poor and whatever you don't finish they said "save it for dinner" (overall, I'd say we are cool with eating our own left overs, but nothing someone else has touched before) or give it to the dogs, chickens or pigs. This is definitely not customary in Colombia and I would highly doubt is common in estrato 3, estrato 1 and below maybe, but just because of need, not because its a tradition.

Colombian "rice and beans" is not always just rice and beans. I've usually had it with pork and a some veggies. Sometime they'll put a pig hoof(pezuña) in the mix. I love that stuff. Luckily, my mom still makes it occasionally.

Lentils are really good too. I've normally seen them made with diced beef.

In Bogotá, no more than 2%. Most of Estrato 1 there eats meat daily. You're just simply dead wrong. You guys spewing here on this forum is NOT going to make me somehow negate my own personal first-hand experiences.

your experience are different from mine, i have seen lots of estrato 1 and 2 who can't afford to eat meat everyday it is so expensive

but if you count eating meat the cheap stuff like bofe, menudencia, costilla, and that sorts then yes, they eat it everday.

there are families in Colombia estrato 1 and 2 as i said some days don't even have money for to buy bread.

Rice and beans are cheap and very filling and you can make a bit pot of that and feed the family for the whole day

Fish depends what type of fish you buy, and where you live

panela is cheap, so a big jug of aguapanela will feed lot in the family rather than a 2 litter coke

eggs are a bit cheap so i have seen lots of families eating rice, potatoes and eggs,

I have never seen anybody eating the leftover unless was a homeless person.
