colombian history

Anybody know of a decent book on the History of Colombia. I bought Colombia: A Brutal History by Geoff Simons but I didn't like it so much. Any suggestions? Thanks!

The best Colombian history book is 'Los Grandes Conflictos Sociales y Económicos de Nuestra Historia' volumes one and two by Indalecio Liévano Aguírre.

My two cents:
* Palacios, M. & Safford, F., 2002, Colombia. Fragmented Land, Divided Society, Oxford University Press, New York.
* Bushnell, D., 1993, The Making of Modern Colombia: A Nation in Spite of Itself, University of California Press, Los Angeles.

I personally would prefer to read a book about Colombian history that was actuallly written by a Colombian.

Simon doesn't like objectivity that has been clear for a while...

Yeah, and foreigners are usually so "objective" about Colombia, right?

I say if you are looking at odds, a foreigner is more likely to be objective.
It is a bit of an anthropological debate though....

Yeah sure, those guys from CNN, the BBC, National Geographic, Hollywood, Univision etc are all so objective about Colombia!

So mainstream Colombian media is better? I disagree with that too...

At least mainstream Colombian media won't focus only on Colombia's negatives.

I was just about to enter a post on this subject.I just purchased "The Making of Modern Colombia" A country in spite of itself. David Bushnell 1993. I cannot put it down. Very informative! David Bushnell is a Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Florida. He has spent a lot of time in Colombia and has certainly done his homework. Very well done! Hey Simon, read the book. I believe you would agree, Bushnell did a very good job!

b bruce: I have read many books on Colombian History due to writing my thesis on Colombia. Bushnell has written several books on Colombia and he is a respected historian. "The Making of Modern Colombia" is a good book, though it is quite short. The Simons book that you mention is flawed...It is definitely biased (though much of what is covered is true), and worse, given that I was researching Colombian history, I quickly noticed several cases of plagiarism.

thur's suggestion, "Colombia: Fragmented Land, Divided Society," was co-authored by a Colombian and it is a very good book. I liked it more than Bushnell's. Marco Palacios (the Colombian who co-authored the book) also wrote "Between Legitimacy and Violence: A History of Colombia, 1875-2002." This is also a very good book, in my opinion. However, they overlap a lot so you probably don't want to buy both of them. "Blood and Fire" is another good book but it focuses specifically on La Violencia in Antioquía.

Isn't blood and fire by Mary Roldan though? I remember reading that book a couple of years ago. Violencia y politica en Colombia by Daniel Pecaut is also a good book. "La Violencia en Colombia" Orlando Fals Borda is good too.
I believe all three are available in English, but I am not certain.

Yes, Ck, Blood and Fire was written by Mary Roldan.

DANCE OF THE MILLIONS: MILITARY RULE AND THE SOCIAL REVOLUTION IN COLOMBIA 1930-1956 is also an interesting read for an older perspective. I believe it was written in the late 50s.

My advice, read several books from several different approaches.

No romy. Quite frankly, my thesis (though I got an A and received a lot of positive feedback) was not as thorough as I would have liked. My class schedule was too demanding. Oh well...It's over.

Usually one can find a plethora of books at the local library or book shops (I prefer barnes and noble). When you get there, you can look up on their computer their whole list of titles for your subject. In your case, type in History of Colombia or Colombian History. If that doesn't work, perhaps try and find an internet connection (they also have it at the library) and type in the same topic-History of Colombia or Colombian History at google.com. Hope this helps!!!!
