Colombian food at London Bridge

Last night, Team Kalder and sundry hangers-on bowled up at the 'Sin Fronteras' Colombian restaurant at London Bridge. I had a corking bandeja paisa. And La Kalder remarked favourably on her san cocho. My chum Del, being a true Brit, at first balked at the prospect of 'foreign muck', but was eventually enticed (by the suggestion he pretend it was something rude and female) into sampling an empanada. He ended up munching on several. We all got trousered on Bolivian(!) lager and a fine time was had by all.

Rum place 'Sin Fronteras'. Decor is minimalist to say the least: It looks like the bus terminus in Cali. But the food was first-class. The hag-like proprietor is a tad off-putting with her air of generalised misanthropy. And the chef looks like he's snuck out of the secure unit at the Maudsley. But it's worth a go- especially seeing as it's (for central London) comparatively cheap. So, if you've been stupid enough to waste your hard earned money on the shitefest that is the London Dungeon, just pop over the road and cheer yourself up with a feed at 'Sin Fronteras'. And tell 'em Kalder sent you (leather jacket, drunk, lousy tipper).

Can you comment a bit on the prices?

My bandeja paisa was about £8/9. The most expensive meal on the menu (a steak dish) was £14. There were seven of us and the bill, including drinks, came to £104.

Wow, that seems very reasonable (for London), but I can't say the exterior makes me swoon (looks like corrugated tin siding). It would fit in perfectly in some parts of Colombia, all it needs is a little green street number.

manIN- 1. Marylebone to Sin Fronteras: Bakerloo line to Waterloo. Jubilee Line to London Bridge. Exit at Tooley Street. Over the road and just to your left.

2. Marylebone to Seven Sisters Latin Market: Bakerloo Line to Oxford Circus. Victoria Line to Seven Sisters. Market is yards from the station in the High Road.

3. To Elephant & Castle Latin Market: Bakerloo line all the way to E&C station. Market is in the big ugly shopping centre.

Thanks Kalder, another place to visit. Always go to La Mazorca which is probably nicer inside than the place you went to but that's not the point, if the grubs good and the atmosphere Colombian, I'll give it a try.

Yes larumbera- it's very Colombian in feel. Modest, relaxed, child-friendly. I'd definitely go again.

i went to la mazorca a couple of years ago and found the food to be mediocre at best. I don't know of many Colombian restaurants but there is a Latin-american restaurant I enjoy visiting. Its called Las Iguanas on the South Bank, and the only Colombian things I've seen so far are Yuca and Brevas con Arequipe...but the food and cocktails are pretty decent.

I agree La Mazorca has gone downhill, it's now called Amazonica or something but otherwise unchanged. Mind you I haven't been for over a year.

"The Latin Corner". On the corner of Camden Road and Dalmeny Avenue. Superb night out. Small, friendly, good food, drink at pub prices and a bloke singing Dario Gomez numbers. Being a greedy bugger, I had the priciest dish: A whole honey glazed chicken with potatoes and arepas (nice moist arepa, not those dry cardboardesque ones you sometimes get); all for £15. Those who had the ceviche, san cocho, et al remarked favourably on their fare.

And (gentlemen), it was full of beautiful women. I have never seen so many goodlooking women at one venue in London before. The owner's daughters are London born. Their combination of Colombian looks and style and English accents was the last word in charm.

Hey Kalder will you be going there again? Perhaps I could join you for a couple hours. In any case perhaps I can drag a couple of my friends there regardless when I'm down in London.

Camden road and Dalmeny is closest to which tube stop?

kalder says on Jun 17, 2008, 00:35:

I'm not too sure about going there in the near future. I've just shelled out for: a. Tickets to Colombia b. A new car. So I'm likely to be subsisting on toast and marmite for the next few months. However, I'm always up for a drink, if that entices. I might be able to roust PowWow out of his lair too. How long will you be over for?

The tube station nearest to the restaurant is probably Caledonian Road.

Good one - will go eat before the Roundhouse. Do I need to book do you think? I don't know about warning me about the kid watershed - better to be warned about the beautiful women!!!!

kalder says on Jun 18, 2008, 05:09:

No, you won't need to book. The place filled up at about 9.00. Before that, it was like any other early evening pub.

Yes, it's the nicest Colombian venue I've been to in London. Have a great night out larumbera.

No. I don't like concerts. A band in a pub's fine, but I like to drink and talk when I'm out.
