Colombian Fashion Trends?

so, i live in the fashion capital of the us (arguably the world) in nyc. everybody is concerned with their appearances and looking original. its is omnipresent (everywhere you go, every person you meet has some sense of style). it is varied (depending on the weather or the person). it is subjective (what is cool to some looks tacky or unkempt to others). and it is expressive (it can either identify you with a group e.g. hipsters, hip-hop, yuppy). and, of course, it can come at a price (some jeans here cost over $300.00).

but, like all aesthetics, the beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. and it is affected by (culture, economics, taste, and personality). and trends seem to fade and come back in time.

for instance:
when i was in high school in the late 90's, the "jock" look was in vogue. Brand labels like GAP, Abercrombie, American Eagle, etc. were big (and embossed on t-shirts, sweatshirts, and jackets. Cargo pants were popular. And the designing landscape was limited to what could be purchased at the mall.

when i was in college in the early 00's, the "outdoors" look was big. Brand labels like North Face, and Patagonia (for fleece) were big. Everyone wanted to look like they were "trekking" the world event though they probably had never left the country.

about 5 years ago, everybody wanted to look "grown up". Brand labels like J. Crew and Banana Republic were big. Blazers and fedoras were popular for boys and brushed denim was all the rage (this is when your jeans look fatigued but was really worked on by sweatshop laborers). Also, the thrift store look made an appearance.

now, in the states, you see the return of the "80's". the mod-look includes colorful tops, skinny pants, stripes. And the fashion landscape has exploded with internet shopping and international design imports. Also, more stores like H&M, Steve and Barry's (closed), and Target bring affordable fashion to the masses.

QUESTION: so, i'm curious. what if any fashion trends are big in Colombia? what influences people's tastes? and does it even matter to the locals?

also, how does the weather affect fashion? here in NY, the weather plays a big role. during the summer, people can wear whatever they want. but during the spring and fall, the weather can be unpredictable (and layers are very important). and during the winter, people tend to want to look good while being extra bundled up. also, the color scheme fades to dark greys, blues, and black.

a lot of girls like black/dark tights or nylons with a shortish skirt or shorts over them. everybody wears jeans with some kind of bright stitching on the butt. one thing you never see in the US: everyone wears jeans with the bottoms rolled up, sometimes quite a bit because they aren't tall enough to fit into them. any kind of 'cool' american brand seems to be in in the in crowd: gap, abercrombie, whatever else. some girls wear kind of baggy t-shirts that come off one shoulder. in medellin, I saw brighter, more tropical colored clothing to match the climate and in bogota people seem to dress in darker colors.

Things I see a lot in Bogota...
* Jeans so tight I wonder how the women sit down
* Scarves - men or women, it doesn't seem to matter, and most seem to have a fringe
* Boots - every other woman is wearing a beautiful pair of leather boots (all types)
* Tops that show off the goods
* beautiful nails
* and GAP hoodies

Overall the women throughout Colombia seem more concerned with how they look than in the U.S. Colombianas tend to dress in better clothes just to go to the grocery store. The things that make me want to hurl when I see it are the women who put tight jeans on their big bottoms. It's like they are trying to get 10 lbs. in a 5 lb bag. Next are the midriff shirts that 90% of the women like to wear...what's up with that? Most of them show their fat little tummy hanging over their pants like they have been drinkin beer all their lives. And the women who think that wear a size small blouse with a 38c rack is so funny. It is really bad when the oldies try to look like the teeners.

But for the most part, I think the more intelligent, the more aware, and the more sophisticated Colombianas dress very well.

For the fashion industry showcase…if you go to the fashion houses in Milan you will see the same clothes on the runway as you see on the street. Places like Paris focus a lot on clothing, but in Milan they show it all. For example if you buy a dress for say $500 you better be wearing some Italians shoes. Have you ever noticed some of the crap they show? Who would ever wear that stuff in public unless you were going to a costume party?

...and so it goes

Yep, the "oldies trying to look like teeners" are refered to as "Hoochi Barbies."

I noticed that shorts are now worn everywhere in Villavo. 2 years ago, it just wasn't seen that much. Now, the majority of people where them when out.

The skinny jeans some people are wearing here in the US now might be the ugliest thing fashion-wise that I have seen. What a bunch of dorks.

When you talk about Colombian Fashion Trends, you must remember that what a girl wears in Bogota, the other girl in Cartagena does not wear the same clothes. Different climate is one of these reasons!! Colour of skin is another. White girl will look good in that but the darker skin girls will look stupid in that .. .etc

no sure if the original poster was a man or woman but ill give you my quick advice if your a man.

1. you need the "ronaldo" or european haircut look. cant go wrong with the 7 either.

2. white puma or diesel sneakers.

3. washed up light jeans. they could be locals like amercanino o chevignon if your on a budget. or you can get diesel, aberocrombie or whatever else you can think of. just make sure they arent baggy or boot but.

4. for shirts no long sleeve stick to designer tshirts. armani, d and g, ed hardy, christian audiger, etc

5. use cologne....... pick you poison.

6. make sure you visit your dentist, get a cleaning and see if you can get a nice whitening treatment.

thats it for now.... back to my tapa azul

El Centro Copias are the norm a sufficient and more than acceptable! Just make sure the label is huge and clearly visible..

I don't wear sleeveless shirts or T-shirt because it looks silly on me. It depends on people. I prefer to wear polo shirts or long-sleeves over-shirts.
