Colombian Contestant on American Idol

The FOX TV Show "American Idol" has narrowed the competition to 12 contestants, and one of them, Jason Castro, is of Colombian origin. He was born in Texas but both of his parents are Colombian.

I personally am supporting him by voting each week. He is a good kid with good values, not to mention talented and original. I'm not a fan of talent shows, but he is not your average contestant. You can check him out on You Tube. I hope to see him go far in his music career.

I wish I knew what part of Colombia he's from. Maybe he'll reveal that in an interview soon.

"Funny how you can be born in the U.S. and still be Colombian. I wonder what I am :)"

Yes, just like John McCain can be born in Panama and still be a (US)American! And if you don't know what you are it's probably because you're a mutt.

BTW, this means now I have to start watching 'American Idol'!

There is no justification for that! Ha Ha.

BTW, I am starting a new charity to help Colombian youngsters with seriously debilitating haircuts.

morphus says on Mar 12, 11:02:

Colombians are mutts too :)

I know i'm a European mutt. Its better to mixed anyway rather than getting the same old junk genetics.

ColombianoGringo says on Mar 12, 11:04:

Yeah, but we usually know what the mix is. I for example have Spanish, Indigenous, French and Portuguese blood. Most Americans have very little idea about their ethnic origins. Mutt isn't really a bad word.

morphus says on Mar 12, 11:06:

Italian/English here. You're more mutt than me :)

ColombianoGringo says on Mar 12, 11:22:

You don't know the half of it. Aside from the ethnic backgrounds, my close Colombian ancestors are from various places such as Bogota, El Huila, Norte de Santander, and Nariño. Like I said in another thread a while back, I am a Colombian Heinz 57.

ColombianoGringo says on Mar 12, 11:24:

Cmon you cheap bums. So far, the charity has collected 38 cents, 100 pesos and some pocket lint. Let's band together and get this poor kid a haircut.

Song: "If I Fell"
Randy said: "Listen, I liked it. I didn't love it, and the reason I didn't love it is that's one of my favorite songs of all, and sometimes with a melody that classic and a song that great, you just need to sing it with more of a heartfelt thing. I liked you going into the [falsetto], but the switches in the melody just kind of threw me a little bit. I found myself kind of tuning out. But it was alright. It was alright."
Paula said: "I disagree with Randy. I disagree. (cheers) What is so special and unique about you is I do feel your heart. I feel your heart. I feel like the audience feels your heart, and that is such a special connection that makes you truly unique. (cheers) You don't do all the riffs and the runs, and you don't have to because you have an emotional connection with the songs that you pick. That's what I think America connects to."
Simon said: "How do you know there was an emotional connection? Jason last week you were incredible. Tonight -- if I'm being honest with you -- it was all a little bit student in a bedroom at midnight... I thought the song actually was quite boring. Very unique, very different -- big, big fan of Jason -- but is he going to make the same impact this week as he did last week? No, because it was the song that made it so special last week. You can't keep doing this week after week. You've got to choose brilliant songs that suit your style. Good enough to stay another week definitely, but not as good as last week."
Additional Info: Jason is in his second year at Texas A&M University, where he recently declared a music minor. It was the only class he failed... On making the Top 12, Jason said, "It's been pretty cool."... Jason revealed his family's from Colombia... He said he chose "If I Fell" because "it's a pretty song" and one he can "really relate to"... Keeping Up with the Kardashians star Kim Kardashian was in the studio audience... Jason played the guitar during his performance... Ryan and Simon shared some banter after the performance about Simon's bedroom comment... "Do you want the dreads back for more?" Ryan asked before giving Jason's voting information.

This guy has been the talk of the town. I really don't find him to be too talented. The hair....yeah, I have problems with that too. He just freaks me out. Cute face and that's about it, not even creative. We will have to see.

travelingirl says on Apr 23, 21:03:

He's done well before... he has sang some very cool, laid back and/or "beachy" tunes. He totally looks the part when he plays the guitar while singing, but I really thought he or this other (blonde girl) contestant should have left tonight instead of the person that did. Oh well, that's just my opinion.

CatGirl says on Apr 29, 13:00:

jajaja...you guys are funny. Actually, I asked a caucasian classmate once how she made her hair "look like that".

It "is" clean. She said she just stopped brushing after washing, (washes everyday) doesn't run her fingers through it. Over a long period of time, it gets a bit matted and - Wallah! You have dreads (according to her). The only problem with her hair was that it was full of split ends and the dreads looked horrific....and since she "dreaded it out" it was impossible to trim the ends. Typically, African American hair and skin is dry and you can apply lots of moisturizer - but on a caucasian....not the same, especially with fine hair.

With cutie pie? Hard to tell if he has split ends, depends on how well he kept it up...

But, I'm going to start making some assumptions here.... Which means I might actually end up making an ass out of myself ..........Thu 04 17, 2008 11:34 am

His performance became very weak at the end, but he is a cute guy and I liked him, I don't watch American Idol but because of him i became a bit interested now that he is gone :( i can go back and watch my normal TV.

Don't have any problems with the hair i think it suits him, my son have dreadlocks actually my son looks like jason but without the blue eyes, that's why i like the boy ^_^

When my son told me he was having dreadlocks I panicked though yuakkk, but he is a tennager so i though ok let him to "express himself" didn't we all did something that our parent so it was horrible jejje
I have learnt a lot about dreadlocks, yes you can keep them clean, no they don't smell unless of course you don't wash them and there is an specially shampoo for them, He told me a few weeks ago after 2 years with the dreads he was going to cut them, and I felt sad, they have become part of who he is, he looks cool with them, but i think he just grew out of that stage, so waiting for the next jeje

I think to arrive to the top 5 WAS A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT and I wish him the best of luck!!!!

cali373 says on May 9, 06:29:

You know I spend time on here in order to get away from things like american idol. JAJAAJA. I do wish the guy good luck though. whoever he is.

Smile if you are a thinker!

CatGirl says on May 9, 07:43:

Kat1 "His performance became very weak "

As I have said before.....he may be a cutie pie - but he has a very limited scope. Will not go far as a singer at all. If he can write and play music? Better for him, otherwise his abilities for being an entertainer "at best" is "FLAVOR OF THE MONTH" = Bubblegum.

Chao cutie pie

Dan says on May 9, 15:08:

people on the local morning radio show said that they reviewed the video when they were talking about the two songs and he mouthed the words "don't vote". The radio show people were saying that he knew he wasn't going to make it and didn't want anyone to try voting for him.

God Bless America!

ColombiaAdopt3 says on May 9, 15:11:

He has been interviewed by tons of Fox affiliates and he has cleared that up. He was saying VOTE, VOTE. He said it twice for emphasis.

He wanted to go further but was also relieved to be eliminated because he had a hard time keeping up with the AI schedule. Next week the contestants have to learn 3 songs to perform, plus they shoot a Ford commercial every week, have interviews and photo shoots. Jason did really well in the beginning when he only had to perform 1 song each week, but once they doubled up on the songs, he started getting burned out.

Dan says on May 9, 15:12:

I beg to differ, it still looks like he was saying "Don't Vote", but it does almost look like he was saying vote twice but I'm not sure about that.:

God Bless America!

ColombiaAdopt3 says on May 9, 15:14:

That is clearly VOTE VOTE. Look at his lips saying the V sound.

ColombiaAdopt3 says on May 9, 15:14:

Jason has a lot of fans. I don't even believe he got the lowest number of votes that night. Syesha doesn't have the fanbase he has. The AI producers have never released vote counts so we have no way of knowing. That night Ryan Seacrest said "Syesha, you're in the top 3". He never said, "Jason, you got the lowest number of votes".

It doesn't matter now. It's all for the best. Jason is happier off of that show.

Dan says on May 9, 15:17:

Either way, he's gone now. I'm actually surprised that he lasted this long. I was more of a fan of a couple others that have been booted off the last few weeks or so. Right now, I'm thinking DaveCook will be the one to win.

God Bless America!

kat1 (Moderator) says on May 9, 15:17:

his expression is like saying vote vote

ColombiaAdopt3 says on May 10, 07:51:

Never mind.

travelingirl says on May 10, 17:35:

Yeah, I thought he was saying "Vote, Vote" when I saw it on tv.

And you are totally wrong, Dan. Archuletta is going to be the big winner! ;) However, I like David Cook too though. I hope both of the Davids are in the top two.
