muchacha, i don't live in queens but i do know the number 7 takes you there and you get it at times square. los colombianos like going to pollo mario, algo asi, natives and tierras colombianas, cosas ricas among many others. that area of queens is infested with colombians, my neighborhood in upper manhattan is infested with dominicans. no more than 10 years ago all the area where colombians now live used to be irish/italian, there might be one ot two left, the rest got the f--k outta there, now all you see are koreans, indians, aregentions, colombians, ecuador, mexican, every modefoque from the third world.

Roosevelt avenue Hi Antioqueñita, if you are coming to New York this weekend, there are a few things you need to know about Roosevelt avenue. First of all, it is not the safest place at night, try to go there during the day, and you will find a subculture of Colombian people that still amazes me after 10 yrs here.
Second, there are plenty of Colombian restaurants in this area... Tierras Colombianas is just one of them, if you walk on Roosevelt avenue between 74th and 84th streets, you will see about 10 different Colombian restaurants. I usually like Pollos Mario o Cositas Ricas, so you might want to consider one of those...
Now, if you are coming by subway, here are the posibilities: 1. If you decide to come right from the airport take the airtrain, for $5.00 to the Jamaica station, once there take the E train to 74th st and Roosevelt ave. Get out on roosevelt ave and you are there. 2. If you are in Manhattan, you could take any of the following, the E, F, R, V, G, or 7. Any of these subways will take you to 74th and Roosevelt ave, which is the biggest terminal in Queens.
However, when taking the subway, be careful which way you are going, most people get lost when they don't read the signs. If you are going to Queens from Manhattan, make sure you go to the platform that says Queens, and if you are going from Queens to Manhattan make sure you go on the platform that says Manhattan or downtown.
Even though this may sound stupid, this is the main reason people get lost, for instance if you take the F train the wrong way, you think you are going to Queens and you end up in Coney Island Brooklyn, that's after an hour an a half of traveling. So be careful and good luck. If you need any further info, you could contact me at Apoleon44 at hotmail.com
I hope this info helps... have a safe trip!!!

Jackson Heights used to be irish a lot more than 10 years ago. There still is an irish presence at Roosevelt and 65dr (?). Roosevelt Avenue was really bad a good number of years ago, but it is relatively safe to go at night. My white ass used to be around there all the time. The 7 train is really interesting because every stop is like going to another country - colombia, mexico, ecuador....and ending in flushing which should be renamed floo-shin. (a lot of asian). I think there was even a doc made about it.

Pollos Marios And Tierras Colombianas. Those are my fave when I go to little chibchombia on Roosevelt. Kind of loud with that darn train going overhead. I've noticed these days you see mostly Ecuadoreans and Mexicans around that neighborhood than you do Colombianos. A lot of taquerias sprouting up all over the place.

Ahh Roosevelt Av I used to LOVE Roosevelt. It did used to be a lot crazier when I first got here. It has been 'sanitized' since then and lost a lot of its character. Almost all of the live music is gone. There is still Chibcha and El Abuelo Gozon at 78th-79th and Roosevelt. I don't know what entertainment they have when these days, it used to be something from sundown until sunup 365 days a year.

For restaurants: Cositas Ricas (THIS is the correct name) is INCREDIBLE, and very famous for pastries, deserts, and arepas. They are right on the corner of Roosevelt and 80th. My favorite Colombian restaurant in the neighborhood is La Hacienda, at 87th st and 37th av, just a block north of Roosevelt. If you go up 37th to 94th street you will find a mexican restaurant right where another road runs into 37th, on the right hand side. Best Mexican food in the city IMO. And for the best rotisserie chicken in NYC go to La Casa del Pollo de Peru right on Roosevelt between 87th and 86th St, but don't go late cuz they close at 8pm or 9pm or some stupid shit.

If you asked me this question even 5 years ago I could have told you about 24 hour 'hair salons' where you would be shown 20 beautiful women to choose from in the back room and 'billiard rooms' where you could buy surplus military hardware. Man, how things have changed here!

Really the board makes me really miss Roosevelt In my opinion there really isn't anything like it, everything you want is at your fingertips. It definitly has changed since my last time in NY but it still has it's flavor, just less colombians and more ecuadorians and mexicans.

Hey Elmo as far as paying taxes, I know a guy who does his taxes out is home and lives around the FDR. Last time he did my taxes why playing a bootleg copy of John Q. I can't say how ligit he is but I have seen even white yuppies in his place.

Rubiazo I think I may know a few of the hair salons that you are speaking off. As a 20 yr old horny mofo with no car, taking an 1 1/2 hour ride to Jackson Heights from Sheepshead Bay was a pain in the ass, but in the end well worth it.

Any of you guys familiar with a notorious bar/club, back in the mid 70’s to 80’called ‘EL SEPTIMO CIELO’ on Roosevelt Avenue not too far from el Chibcha. A number of Colombians got killed there, it got so bad that cops would stand outside taking pictures of everybody coming in and out; it was the hang out for Colombian “evil doers. I took my cousins from Tampa there and they wanted out immediately. I think it had to do with my cousin husband finding a bag of perico on top of the toilet bowl for all to enjoy.

Plenty of shops. After eating at Cositas Ricas walk one block to 82nd Street and Roosevelt. Walk along 82nd street, you'll find a variety of shops. There are clothing stores(I recommend Bang Bang), toystores, jewerly, perfume shops, electronics stores, etc. I am sure you'll find one to your liking.
I recommend you go to Tierras Colombianas for lunch. They have good steak and seafood, and its real close to 82nd street.
Another "fun" Colombian hotspot along Roosevelt Ave from the 80's was the spot between 92nd and 93rd street. I forget its name but last I heard it was a titty bar. I've heard some crazy stories from there.

That WAS Fiddle and Bow and yes it used to be great. It got lamer and lamer and now is long since closed.
ElChe I guarantee you all those places are closed now. Many of them had underage girls working for them, especially the Mexican places for some reason. I guess they thought they were still over there where the age of consent is 12!!!
The new thing now is they have vans full of girls and they drive to your house and you go in the van, pick who you want and take her back with you. Fuck that. Nothing like the police following the van around and then getting YOUR address, not to mention one of the girls calling her pimp boyfriend to rob your place later.
There used to be an Ecuadoran place right at 85th and Roosevelt that had AWESOME music, different acts every hour all night every night. It is now a shoe store. Oh Rome, what has become of thee?

Jackson Heights "First of all, it is not the safest place at night, try to go there during the day"

I don't know where you get this from. If you go east of Junction Blvd. it is a little dirty and disorganized, but then again, there is little reason to go there in terms of lo colombiano. I have had a ex-boyfriend on Junction Blvd. and another one in Corona (about 20 blocks from 82 St.-Jackson Heights 7 train station). I technically live in Washington Heights (Upper Manhattan), but basically live in Corona half the time in reality. I am a blonde, blue-eyed Irish person and I walk around there all the time at night and have for years. If there were a target, it'd be me. Go at night to go dancing or to some bars.

My Jackson Heights Tips My top choices (all in Queens):

Tierras Colombianass on Roosevelt Ave. between 82/83 Streets (7 train to 82 St.). It's very friendly, family-oriented in diner-like decor. The bistec caballo and plato montanero/campesino are good here. It seems to be a hit with just about anyone I've taken there.

Listo El Pollo- it's on 37th Ave. (just a block north of Roosevelt Ave., where the 7 train is) on 86th St. (7 train to 82 St or 90th St.). It's a bit more expensive, but the decor is interesting- a waterfall out front, you can eat in these tables that look like they are in huts, and the waitresses have costumes. They also have a small bar.

La Pequena Colombia- on Roosevelt Ave. and 84th St. Take the 7 train to 82 St. This is good and has a decent-sized menu. The place has large photos all over the wall of cities and pueblitos in Colombia.

Natives- this is on Northern Blvd./8 St. You take the 7 train to 82 St., but it's a 10-minute walk or so.

Dessert:

La Nueva Cafe- it's on 37th Ave. near 83 or 84th St. I don't really like it as far as atmosphere goes because it is very modern-looking with lights and all, but you can get some good desserts like pudding made of maracuya or orange. I really like the desserts here.

Cositas Ricas- this is on Roosevelt Ave. near like 78 St., I believe. Take the 7 train to 74 or 82 St. They sell ice cream, all sorts of baked goods (biscochos, bunuelos, pan, etc.), and has a small bar.

Bars:

La Jungla del Forastero- this is on Roosevelt Ave. near like 78th St. This is cool because the bar is a fish tank. Happy Hour is like 4-8PM.

D'Antigua- this is on Northern Blvd. and 86th St. (take the 7 train to 82 or 90th St. and it's about a 10-minute walk north). It has an actual "bar" but it also has tables and couches, so it's a lounge, too. It plays a lot of rock en espanol and the special drinks are really good and also sells desserts and snacks. The picadas are awesome. On Wednesday twice a month they have Tertulias (like people sing, play instruments, tell jokes, poems, etc.). My friend's boyfriend is in charge of that, so I can find out when they all are. This is a really cool place to go to just chill or go for drinks with friends.

Also, basically on Roosevelt Ave., 82 St., 37th Ave., and Northern Blvd. between like 74th St to Junction Blvd. there are a bunch of smaller bakeries, snack joints that sell stuff like raspados and arequipe, bars, small discotecas, and restaurants. The ones I named are basically my favorites and the favorites of my friends. Also, bear in mind that you can also score some great Ecuadorain, Peruvian, Mexican (real Mexican food, no Tex-Mex), Argentine, Uruguayana, and Indian food over there. They have some CD stores and books stores specializing in Spanish-language materials (i.e., pick up the new Aventura CD you can't get in your town or buy abuelita a pocket-sized book of phrases in English or a Deportivo Cali bracelet).

Feel free to send a note to me here if you want more info as I'm always there.

for rubiazo Hey rubiazo, when i talk about Roosevelt ave not being the safest place at night, I know exactly what I am talking about, just stop by elmhurst hospital on a sat night and you will see all kinds of goodies there.
Also, do some research, maybe you will find out about a mexican guy who was killed about two months ago in the corner of 78th when a couple of guys hit them with bats repeatedly until he died. "Roosevelt Ave is not safe at night" and stereotypes ar races have nothing to do with it.
As far as Corona goes, I lived there until a few months ago, and I was forced to move out for safety reasons, my car was broken into almost every week, I opted for leaving the doors unlocked because every morning I would see cars with the windows smashed in because the thieves couldn't open the door.
Now, don't get me wrong, NYC is a great place (the best city in the world if you ask me), but in like any other big city, you should keep your eyes open...

There are obviously a lot safer neighborhoods In NYC then Jackson Heights and surrounding areas, but neither is it South Bronx, Harlem, Brownsville, etc etc. In general you always have to watch you back in any of the boroughs, espeically at night time. I stayed in Queens about 2 years ago right across the street from Elmhurst Hospital. I didn't have any problems except for the cat calls I got at 4am passing some gay club around the 74th street station. That no doubt put the fear of God in my heart.

The real reason this city is turning into a sleepy little town is because of wise asses like you know think you know it all and will pay $2,000 month rent to live in a studio the size of my bathroom. Rubiazo says on Jul 29, 2005, 14:27:

OK for the RECORD I moved here to Inwood, lived at 97 Arden St for 5 years.
I paid $555.04 for my first apt, a ONE BEDROOM. It went up to $574 or so after the lease expired (rent stabilized.) Then I got a big two bedroom (because I was running a recording studio out of one of the rooms) for $1000. It went up to $1060 2 years later (still rent stabilized). THEN I bought a 2 family house in the Bronx for $25k less than it appraised for, and now rent both units out and live in the basement making a PROFIT.
I agree that people are paying stupid amounts for rent, especially in certain areas.
To tell the God's honest truth, I was in denial about how shitty things are getting here for years. It took some of my native New Yorker friends to open my eyes to how fucked up it is. One friend who is thinking of moving to Colombia with me (even though his Spanish is still weak) is one of the best drummers in the city and also an ex-lieutenant with the Black Spades. BxUnica, if you don't know who the Spades are, look them up. He was born in 1964, grew up on Boston Road in the South Bronx in the 70s and was part of the original ciphers. He is even more bitter about the state of affairs in this Disneyfied city than I am, and he has FAR more NYC credibility than 10 of each of us put together.
The chica house thing is really history. You may still find a place or two open with limited hours (usually afternoons only, closed by 7pm or so) with 1-2 ugly girls, if you're LUCKY.
Like I said, Unica, any time you want to go out clubbing after 11pm on a weeknight, the tab is on me. Show me this shit I'm missing out on somehow. It doesn't have to be in Queens either. Forget about the whores, I don't care about that anymore! Show me anywhere that has live tropial music on a nightly basis, or even a regular basis outside of Saturdays. 10 years ago without even living here I could have named you literally scores of places.

He brags about riding his bike through the South Bronx, talks about New York and tries to speak for all of us as if we were a collective group even going as far as calling himself a New Yorker and insinuating that he has lived he for many, many years when in fact he came in 1997. This was until someone pointed out he is not only not from NY, he is not even American. He lives here for a few years and is all of a sudden some NYC expert. He talks about how the city is so different and has lost it's fair even though he wouldn't have had the cojones to move here before Giuliani.

I had assumed that he was some kind of Colombian or Colombia expert like other people who are from there on the board, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt at first. I ewas left only to discover that in reality, he visited Colombia only ONCE and for just SIX DAYS. If you have visited a place only once, you really don't know that much, do you? In addition to that, a few other people have gently pointed these things out in other threads. I will not name names, but after pointing this out a week or to ago on another thread, I received an e-mail from a member of this forum giving me thumbs up for putting Rubiazo in his place. The person also told me that he has also made a nuisance of himself on even more posts talking shit about things that he knew nothing about.

I myself do not comment on many things here even though I read most of the posts simply because most people here have more experience than I do on these topics. I shut my mouth and observe mostly, but you'd beter believe I'm going to but an arrogant person like him in his place when half the time he doesn't even know what he's talking about.

As for Elmo? He is Colombian by birth, but I think he is more of a New Yorker than I am. If you want to know about how New York used to be, listen to Elmo; don't listen to this Johnny-come-lately spew crap.

WTF When did I ever claim to be an expert on Colombia? First off, I've only ever been to Bogota. Secondly, I have only ever been there once.
What pisses me off is when people on this board talk about shit that is really universal and make it look like a strictly Colombian or Latin American problem. And THAT is when I open my big mouth.

The three things I am an expert on in this world are music, sex, and food (not necessarily in that order.) And I'm hardly bragging about riding my bike through the South Bronx. I've never thought the South Bronx was such a big deal, at least not since 1997. If you thought that was bragging you seriously misinterpreted me.

Show me where I have given erroneous info about NYC. If you really want, I will post links corroborating everything I've said about Roosevelt Av. I will even copy shit from PRIVATE forums of which I'm a member. You wanna talk about arrogance, YOU are the one giving out misinformation on here. How is it that ELChe and Elmo both agree with me on how much NY has changed yet you still need to argue it with me? Fine, if I'm a 'johnny-come-lately' tell THEM how wrong they are that NYC has been turned into fucking Disneyland. Or even tell me if I got the wrong block on any of those restaurants, instead of just WHINING and BITCHING. I guarantee you all those locations are correct though, those are all places I have eaten at repeatedly. Or maybe you LOVE the food at Rincon Sabroso for some goddamn reason nobody can fathom!!

And I'm still waiting for you to tell me just where the fuck all the great live music that used to be on Roosevelt went. Now that all the places I liked to go to have closed down, where are people going? Since you think I'm so full of shit, PROVE IT!!! Put your money where your yip is.

One thing I know about Bogota is that in six days I saw a live music scene that kicked the shit out of what's going on in NYC these days. And if I found that much shit just scratching the surface I can't wait till I go down there again, this time for six weeks!! But once again, if I'm wrong, SHOW ME THE MONEY! I will gladly post a thread publicly apologizing to you if you can do that! But I know I won't be eating any crow any time soon because I know you can't deliver!

Sigue Hablando Tu Mierda You have completely put words in my mouth and twisted the rest around. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that NYC has changed and it sure doesn't tell living there for 7 years. And it's not just on this post that you've spewed bullshit. Everywhere you go you spew bullshit on here. I had to laugh when you arrogantly tried to tell Miami Peter hhat county Aventura was located in (you know, since you are such the geography expert) and he told you that he grew up there and corrected you. A lot of people on this board have corrected you, but still you are the sabe-de-todo. You are so into trying to prove yourself that you probably take pictures of the streets signs and carry a clipboard wherever you go.

I'm through with you. It sure does take real brains to say that the reason NYC sucks is the New Yorkers, to write an essay about why Bogota is the best city in the world after only having seen it once, and telling people you are going to go move to Colombia so you don't have to deal with "people like us" in NYC. Please choose another cuntry to move to because Colombia has enough problems to worry about without having a self-appointed spokesperson for Colombia and NYC via Canada living there.

Still waiting... name ONE thing I said about NYC that was inaccurate. I'm not going to argue with Peter Miami about Miami. He's probably right.
Please notice that instead of personally attacking you I'm trying to keep this on the positive tip, because this board has some rules. Whatever you or anyone may think of me, I don't like to go ad hominem and I respect the rules here. You seem to think you are an exception.
So if I post something that you think is wrong for fucks sake REBUT IT, CORRECT IT. Its not like anybody here doesn't have the right to disagree with me or any other poster. I really don't know what opinions I may have that piss you off so much, and frankly I don't really give a fuck! A lot of people here disagree with me strongly on many things, but I respect their opinions as hopefully they respect mine.
So GO AHEAD. Show the whole board what a moron I am. Give us some POSITIVE INFO on where the great South American nightclubs are in NYC. Or if you think La Hacienda has shit food, or whatever. Of course if you say that I will probably respond asking if you've been smoking crack. Right now all you're doing is wasting space on this board making negative comments about my personality.

I’m to embarrassed to say w I’m too embarrassed to say when I landed in NYC but let me put it this way, when we (brothers) got to NYC a guy named Robert Wagner was the mayor to be followed by a handsome dude called John Lindsey. Yes, New York City has changed a LOT, some hate it some love it. I missed drinking beer while walking the streets of Manhattan. I miss the old Times Square but I do like the new Queens, it used be a desolate depressing place (what I imagine Europe to be) with mostly Irish; it had no life no businesses just dark Irish pubs in every corner with drunken old guys with big red tiny hole covered noses in flannel shirts, Archie Bunker types. Now is busy and lively with a bunch of South Americans, Mexicans, Koreans and guys who forgot to remove the towels from their heads. I miss all the Puerto Ricans; it reminds me of an old Peter, Paul and Mary song. “Where have all the Ricans and their hot women gone? I heard the ones not in prisons are living or planning on moving to Orlando, look out kernow,

modefoque: All the ricans are with me and Julio down by the schoolyard! Come down, we saved a few hot women for you. Actually we didn't save them, we worked their chiquitos a bit. If they went straight to you from nothing they might explode!!

I can still miss Roosevelt from 5 years ago because there was a huge difference. I'm still looking for a replacement for all the places I use to play and hang out at. I actually feel it's getting back to 'no life' only this time, with Latin Americans instead of Irish.
A SCARY part of people who used to be involved in the music business are in or just getting out of prison now. Maybe we need to stage a massive break from Sing Sing and get these MFs back on the streets hustling so they can get back to promoting good music again!!

Rubiazo, Rican chicks will never say no to chiquito exploration, they love getting it up their keaster just as much as Greek women.
Dude, from up-town Manhattan I rode my bike all the way to Rockland state park, not too far from Bear Mountain. That shit took me 4 hours the first time, last time it was less than three. You gotta go to bear mountain, on weekends it looks like uptown Manhattan. Dominicans and blacks all over the damn place, all you see are spics with big ass pots filled with rice and beans, spaghetti and chicken, fried salami and fired cheese, mangu, longanisa and rice etc, those modefoques don’t believe in bringing only tuna or turkey sandwiches. I was looking at the white cops face and they looked in shock, like those modefoques had two heads, they don’t get to see too many ghetto modefoques up that way. Last year they had October fest on one side with a bunch of Nazis wearing funny green costume, knee high socks lots of button, furry balls and funny hats yodeling and the other side the damn pot bellied, gold chain wearing Dominicans with their bachata going full blast.

Trust me I've already been :) And I'm very familiar with the Rican chiquito thing. Hell, with some of them it's more important than vag! Why do you think I moved to the Bronx in the first place, for the scenery?? :P

I have to correct myself. I don’t know that Greek women enjoy entry thru the back door as much as Rican girls, I've never been with a Greek woman. I do know that Greek guys prefer back entry; I think is a Mediterranean thing. Just like costeños, they are also known for having sex with sheep’s, horses, goats and donkeys, just look at their legends, specially that dude that’s half man and half horse

You've never heard of the 'anal-only' Greek brothel that used to be on Steinway St then? Rumor has it that only virgins (vaginal) worked there! Gotta love that Greek culture. :)) A friend of mine went, I never even saw the place, it was before my time. But I'm surprised you never went!!! Sounded just like right up your alley (or HER alley)!
