Cocaine and meth prices soar as quality plummets: DEA
1 hour ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) ?? The prices of cocaine and methampetamine in the United States have increased significantly over the last 21 months as they decreased in quality, the US anti-drug agency said Thursday.

The price of a gram of cocaine in the US soared 89 percent -- from 96.61 dollars to 182.73 dollars -- from January 2007 to September 2008, said the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in a report.

As authorities clamp down on production and supply routes, drug dealers raise prices to match risk and dwindling supply.

Analyzing 24,000 drug busts across the country, the DEA said cocaine purity dropped during the same period from 67 percent to 46 percent.

To increase profitability suppliers cut potency by mixing it with a wide variety of other substances -- an often dangerous practice.

For methampetamine, the DEA analyzed some 58,000 samples and reported the price of an ounce rose 23 percent, from 184.09 dollars to 148.91 dollars -- as its purity fell during the same timeframe from 57 percent to 52 percent.

"For almost two years the illicit drug market has been showing signs of distress," said DEA Acting Administrator Michele Leonhart.

"These price and purity trends are not just an immediate reaction from a single enforcement operation, but the result of continuous and persistent progress DEA is making in concert with our international and domestic partners," she said.

"Across the United States, Mexico, and Colombia and the transit zones in between, we are crippling the world's leading drug networks."

I wonder if this is also due to Plan Colombia and it's war against drugs and the eradication of the coca leaf. After Iraq we pump the most money (finance) to Colombia. So, one would assume that the export has gone down. However, after reading previous news the export of Cocaine has increased from Colombia.

I think that it has to do with the increase in enforcement and demand in the states. I know in Canada and Europe, demands has gone up. Maybe as the economy levels, people won't be so stressed and might have a little less spending money. One big problem in Canada is meth get added to weak cocaine because meth is so much cheaper. The unfortunate result is people getting addicted to a more dangerous drug.

The industry should be regulated to stop the violence associated with the trade and improved safety but then so many cops would be out of work.

I heard baking soda and emptying B Vitamin capsules were commonly used for cutting.

It is all due to the all out war between the mexican cartels and the cartels and mexican governament. Can't move much merchandise when your boys are either stalking others to kill, avoid being arrested or killed, or just plain hitting the mattresses.

That's not a rise in price, that's about a 20% drop.

Personally, I don't believe it. I think it is just a ploy to justify continued funding which benefits SOME politically connected people.

If it is true the cost is to high and these monies could be better invested elsewhere.

Let's say the street price of cocaine is $150 USD per gram. There are 28 grams in an ounce. $150 x 28 = $4200 per ounce.

Both platinum and gold are currently trading at $820 an ounce, down from $2000 and $1000 an ounce, respectively.

Outside of diamonds and love (haha), is cocaine the most expensive thing in the world? Maybe an ounce worth of super-duper experimental (and legal) pharmaceuticals?

yes it seems quality cocaine is like gold. In Australia a gram is worth $350

Tinto...what is saffron running these days?

It must be due to increased demand. Colombia is as flooded with foreign currency as ever, and the economy is still going strong here. We would be in a big time recession down here with cocaine sales were down!

A kilo of saffron is in the $3000 usd range. Last year it was around $2200. Expensive, yes - but a hell of a lot cheaper than cocaine.

R Jorge is that by the kilo or gram? Hmmm.

"THE street price of cocaine varies hugely across the world. No surprise that it is cheapest in Colombia, the world's biggest producer of coca: at $2, a gram costs less than a Big Mac."

"If a kilo of cocaine costs £200 from a peasant in Colombia"

At two bucks a gram that comes to two grand per kilo at the STREET LEVEL of marketing. I suspect a key could be had for substantially less.
