Colombian Butterflies

Colombia is the first country of the world in variety of butterflies, with 3,500 diurnal species and 45,000 nocturnal ones.
Eleuchia Longwing (Heliconius eleuchia)
H. eleuchia occurs from sea level to 2,000 m in riparian forest. Usually individuals fly rapidly and in the lowerstory. The longwing butterflies are also known as Heliconians. They are brightly colored butterflies with long forewings. Adult Longwings may live for several months, much longer than most butterflies.
This one was taken just outside of Ibagué in the state of Tolima, Colombia
Altitude – 1240 M.

Another good post, thanks!

We have been to the butterfly house in Quindio, perhaps not the ideal place to see them but an efficient way of viewing many species in a couple of hours.

Great photos, thanks. Has anyone been to the place close to Medellin I am talking about?
I grew up seeing so many different butterfly , it was so normal to me> Here in California you are lucky if you see a Monarch. I see in my yard many little light yellow ones, that is it.

EL NINO Y LA MARIPOSA

Mariposa,

Vagarosa

Rica en tinte y en donaire Image and video hosting by TinyPic

¿qué haces tú de rosa en rosa?

¿de qué vives en el aire?

Yo, de flores

Y de olores,

Y de espumas de la fuente,

Y del sol resplandeciente

Que me viste de colores

¿Me regalas

tus dos alas?

¡son tan lindas! ¡te las pido!

deja que orne mi vestido

con la pompa de tus galas

Tú, niñito

tan bonito,

tú que tienes tanto traje,

¿Por qué quieres un ropaje

que me ha dado Dios bendito?

¿De qué alitas

necesitas

si no vuelas cual yo vuelo?

¿qué me resta bajo el cielo

si mi todo me lo quitas?

Días sin cuento

De contento

El Señor a ti me envía;

Mas mi vida es un solo día,

No me lo hagas de tormento

¿te divierte

dar la muerte

a una pobre mariposa?

¡ay¡ quizás sobre una rosa

Me hallarás muy pronto inerte.

Oyó el niño

Con cariño

Esta queja de amargura,

Y una gota de miel pura

Le ofreció con dulce guiño

Ella, ansiosa,

Vuela y posa

En su palma sonrosada,

Y allí mismo, ya saciada,

Y de gozo temblorosa,

Expiró la mariposa

Beautiful display! I am in awe of the butterflies that I am constantly seeing all over the country. By the way, I highly recommend the zoo in Cali (rated no. 1 in South America by Lonely Planet) they have an awesome display of butterflies in a large open-air cage you walk through as they fly freely around you. Beautiful butterflies, brightly colored ones and rare ones that dazzle the human eye.
