Here in the states, beer drinking is a well-founded tradition. Maybe it's the European ancestry, who knows? When I went to Colombia the first time, my novia first thought it was odd that I drank beer at all hours of the day. After I explained to her that I couldn't drink the water and that I rarely drink sodas, she thought nothing more of it. When I offered to buy her a beer she would only drink Corona. I had been drinking Club Colombia and Aguila the whole time up until then. Sometimes I wonder why she didn't just ask for one sooner, but I have since discovered that she will not ask for anything no matter how badly she wants it, except of course for a phone-call from me everyday. Once she got started, she could easily keep pace with me, beer for beer. My question is this: are there other Colombian beers than Club Colombia and Aguila? Also, why does she only like Corona? Is Corona a status symbol in Colombia? I'll admit it's pretty good, but if you're going for taste and price is no object, there are plenty of imports that blow Corona off the map.

I like the name of that one because I am from the coast myself. Well, speaking of beer it's about beer:30 in this part of the world so I'm going to give Honda 20 more minutes of my time, then I'm headed for the house and a cold one. By the way, I don't usually drink the water here either. That stuff will kill you. ;)

b bruce says on Jun 17, 2005, 14:59: Micro brews from the Pacific Northwest! Alaskan Amber is a very good micro-brew as is Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. As far as Rolling Rock. It depends what brewery it comes from. The mother batch is Latrobe, Pennsylvania. But to meet demand it is also made in Philadelphia using Philadelphia water which explains the skunk smell. The beer brand Singha which comes from Thailand is very good. The oldest brewery in the U.S. is Yeungling. Comes from the Coal Mine region Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Very good beer. Look for their Black and Tan.It is very popular here in Key West! In Colombia I really liked Aguila because it was light and refreshing. Easier to handle to morning after. Club Colombia is O.K. Corona does not appeal to me. Viva Colombia!

kernow62 says on Jun 18, 2005, 05:25: I think the problem can be what you are used to, if you like European lagers you likely as not might not like English bitter or ale, let alone porter or stout. Additionally pilsners and lagers are drunk at different temps. compared to British brews; a lot of folks can't get used to drinking at cellar temps. I like all of them, the problem is I no longer drink, and have only ever found one good non-alcoholic, Kaliber. It still isn't great though.

kernow62 says on Jun 18, 2005, 21:47: You don't think Budweiser is too weak? It can barely get out of the glass it is so weak, I suppose if you can drink it all night it must be a notch away from water, no?. Malt liquor is crap, but it is popular in the hood. I've put away a few Mickey's in my time, but the only malt liquor that was any good was Carlsberg Elephant Malt and it wasn't that good. The ice beers and malt liquors are made the same way in the US, they are not actually strong beers, they are regular weak brews that are frozen to remove water. They make some really nasty tasting beers like this in Germany too.

I used to be an avid beer drinker for the taste not the alcohol, in fact I was gathering a database in order to write a book on the subject. A full-flavored brew need not be high in alcohol content, in fact if the content is too high it often doesn't taste great, they often have a sweeter taste or leave a cloying aftertaste.

In fact, one of them has never drank any liquior and the other maybe drinks one rum punch (carribean) every two months at the most. I must gravitate towards the more serious types as I don't recall any Colombian women I ever met that would drink liquior seven days a week. Maybe a few drinks on a friday and saturday night relaxing after a long weeks work but that about it. Just earning a living and keeping a job in Colombia is difficult enough without clouding your mind (and emptying your pockets) with booze.
