john_stark says on Jan 5, 2008, 17:00: She's in a rural area of Guanacaste, the Mississippi of Costa Rica. Travelling there from San Jose is like going back 40 years in time. I saw pics of her room and it looks like the barn where I used to keep my goats. For a while she had to move out because they were afraid she was going to get dengue fever.

billyb says on Jan 5, 2008, 17:27: Jaja, i have a good friend in Knoxville and she is such an east TN snob, always talking shit about poor old W TN. Kind of like us ere in Nor Cal look down on So Cal :))
travelingirl says on Jan 5, 2008, 17:43: Well, those West TN peeps talk trash about East TN too though... how East TN is full of hillbillies while Memphis can't get rid of an idiot mayor. Don't get me started on that one. ;) I sorta miss Knoxville... it isn't the prettiest place in the world (other than the mountains) but it has several Targets for me to stop at, no one makes fun of my southern accent, and it has the fabulous football Saturdays in the fall. Around her hair she wore a yellow ribbon... |

travelingirl says on Jan 5, 2008, 17:50: Ah, well "Bless her soul" is used all over the south actually. It is pretty funny though, saying that phrase and then following it up with something mean. I never say it, seems a bit old-timer. ;) Of course some people down here claim I'm from the north b/c my accent isn't as prominent as theirs or because I don't like country music, etc. Around her hair she wore a yellow ribbon... |
john_stark says on Jan 5, 2008, 17:51: There's gotta be some country music you like? Kelly Willis? Alan Jackson? The Dixie Chicks?
travelingirl says on Jan 5, 2008, 17:53: Yuck, yuck, and YUUUUUCK! (who is Kelly Willis anyway?) A couple of Carrie Underwood's songs don't make me want to vomit but I NEVER listen to country music stations, not my style. Around her hair she wore a yellow ribbon... |
billyb says on Jan 5, 2008, 17:55: I was known as the damn yank in Jackson and when i would say i was from Colombia, the educated ones would nod and say "oh, from South Carolina?".
travelingirl says on Jan 5, 2008, 17:57: I get the "South Carolina" thing all the time when I mention Colombia. So are you originally from Colombia? I don't see how they'd think you are a yank unless you somehow have a northern accent? Around her hair she wore a yellow ribbon... |
Dan says on Jan 5, 2008, 17:57: my mom listened to country music a lot when I was younger AND she thought it was fun to sing along too!! That's probably why I can't stand it now. God Bless America! |

john_stark says on Jan 5, 2008, 18:17: Country music has deteriorated considerably in recent years. There is a brand of Texas country music populated by people like Kelly Willis, Pat Green, Bruce Robison, Charlie Robison, Robert Earl Keen, et al that is alive and well. One of my daughters has sung on stage with Charlie Robison several times.
houstongal says on Jan 5, 2008, 18:19: You actually like that stuff John? I saw Pat Green at the Houston Rodeo a few years back. He seems to have quite a following of drunk college-aged fans. Culture is language and language is culture - Dr. Annamaria Napolitano |
john_stark says on Jan 5, 2008, 18:25: I'm not a big fan of Pat Green even though he is a Red Raider. I love the Robison brothers and Kelly Willis.

houstongal says on Jan 5, 2008, 18:54: Great city. I turned a job offer there last year though. Too expensive to buy a house in town (compared to Houston). Culture is language and language is culture - Dr. Annamaria Napolitano |
john_stark says on Jan 5, 2008, 18:58: Girl, girl, girl. What could you be thinking? There's a reason it's more expensive than Houston. And I am not knocking Houston - it's array of cultural activities is absolutely tops. But the coolability factor of Austin is second to none.
Dan says on Jan 5, 2008, 19:00: I went to San Antonio a few times for the weekend during Feb and March... very nice city. I like it a lot. God Bless America! |
houstongal says on Jan 5, 2008, 19:03: I would be working for Dell right now and the commute from where I would have wanted to live to Round Rock is terrible! It was a VERY difficult decision to make. The job was fantastic, the people were great. But houses in the $600,000 range were fixer uppers! I would have had to go up to $800,000 in order to find anything acceptable. Culture is language and language is culture - Dr. Annamaria Napolitano |
billyb says on Jan 5, 2008, 19:04: I've heard good things about Austin, don't they have a real lively music scene there?
john_stark says on Jan 5, 2008, 19:13: Believe it or not, there are neighborhoods in Austin where you can still buy cheap houses. My daughter's boyfriend bought one for a little over $100,000. The only problem is they tend to be on the other sides of Austin from the north and the traffic there is horrendous. They are finally building a mass transit line from Leander to downtown Austin so maybe in the future they'll run a branch to Round Rock and one to South Austin.
houstongal says on Jan 5, 2008, 19:17: I know, but I didn't want to wait that long. South Austin is right up my alley in terms of taste. I would've cursed driving to work each day. And it's good that I didn't take the job, considering all of the problems Dell has been having lately (I guess it was 2006 when I turned them down).
