Great timing for this video. My step daughter is having problems with a teacher who is giving her bad grades for misspelling Colombia. The teacher says it's spelled columbia. Time for a parent , teacher confrence. Think I will slap a copy of this video on her as well as other things. I am hoping the teacher is just ignorant and not raciest.

If she is spelling British Columbia, the District of Columbia, Columbia, South Carolina and nearly every other Columbia in North America as Colombia, then, yes, she is misspelling it. If on the other hand, they are spelling the name of the country then the teacher is a goofball and she should watch the video.

The teacher was informed it was the country in south america. My step daughter told the teacher she was born there and knew for sure how it was spelled. Teacher still gave her a bad grade. I will get to the buttom of it. Should be fun.

Yep, eywed. I too would look forward to having a conference with that teacher. I can understand there being a discussion between student and teacher about it - it's called learning - but to actually penalize a kid with a low mark for a misspelling that isn't technically a misspelling - my blood pressure would be slightly elevated. Would your daughter be corrected if she wrote Deutschland rather than Germany? I doubt it. Let us know what happens.

I admit it-- it bothers me when people spell Colombia with a "u" because it's not spelled correctly that way.
Oh, and what eywed's daughter's teacher needs to realize is that it's not that Colombia is how we spell it in Spanish it's also how it's supposed to be spelled in English.

For instance, Brasil is spelled with a "z" in English that's what the dictionaries say. That's fine... Brasil em lingua portuguesa and Brazil in English.

BUT in ColOmbia's case-

Colombia is spelled with an "O" in Spanish... ok... big deal BUT Colombia is also spelled with an "O" in English, according to Merriam-Webster and Oxford.

So tell your daughter's teacher to be a little more open-minded and look at a world atlas sometime. If she's not willing to learn a little geography she shouldn't be qualified to teach.

I posted a LONGASS thing that a buddy researched, not long ago. Nobody disputes the correct spelling of Colombia. But in comparison to ALL the Columbias in the english language, the one word that identifies Colombia is is a miniscule usage.

I can't remember now which thread it was in, but if you'd like, I could find it. You colombians need to get off your high horses about being spelling nazis- and about slamming doors, while you're at it! jajajajajajjaja

But it is factually incorrect to imply, as another person (perhaps jokingly?) implied that Colombia the country is spelt Columbia in English, i just pointed out it's not. I don't mind, but imagine if Canada was Kanada and England Ingland and United States United Gates, etc... quite frankly it doesn't bug me, and I never try and sit on a high horse, the ride is fun but you pass too many people on the way.
