Colombia with out costeños

So there I was, yesterday after work sitting on a park bench in Manhattan feeding the pigeons. As I toss old crumbs, out of nowhere nearly a million of those rats with wings surrounded me which frightened me a little, I began to ponder about Colombia and where is heading.
As the entire world slowly becomes Americanize and with good reasons, right now gringos rule this planet, and this is more obvious in cachaco Colombia.
We in the northern Colombian coast are slow in converting.
Hey! what is cachaco colombia? everything thing south of Monteria.
Most gringos praise and love cachacos cities, cus there they are worshiped.
Costeños are quite different; we are pioneers of just about everything that is authentic of Colombia.
With out us, no Cumbia, no Vallenato, No Millo, No Champeta, No dancing, No Joe Arroyo, NO Diomedes, No sombrero Voltaic, no Nothing, ONLY Juan Valdez and bambuco.
Thank god our costeño youth continue to make our traditional music, sure we got some that have gone astray like Shakira but most remain very proud. Anyway Shakira’s voice is not meant for vallenato, she did what had to be done, but she remains an extremely proud costeña and Barranquillera..

Colombia without costenos?
No Jorge 40, no Diomede, not so many abandoned (by their fathers) children, less corruption, miles of unspoiled beaches... WOW... a paradise! :-)

Hey dave, good question.
I really don’t know, I do remember on my way home from work thinking about my demise and what’s gonna happen to my bullet riddle body.
I talked to my daughter about that and she insisted I get a divorce immediately, she wants full control of my remains. I think she wants my dead ass back in NYC, I on the other hand don’t really care what they do with my rotten black ass, but I understand where she’s coming from.
Today I plan to go back and feed the pigeons unless the guys, Rubito, Rocci and the Morph, rather meet in the village and get drunk, otherwise you’ll find me on the same bench.

I'll get there, when I get there!

My wife was just cursing Costeños yesterday. The notario in San Andres put the wrong date on our marriage certificate and came up with a million excuses as to why he "couldn't" change it. She started going off about how Costeños are lazy, slow and difficult.

I just laughed when she said that and asked her if an "isleño" from San Andres was really considered a Costeño. Her reply "Todos esos hijueputas son iguales!"

Ja Ja Ja

Her words, not mine. I like some Costeños and find them to be quite entertaining.

I would not worry about it. Seriously. China is destined to assume the "leadership" role in the near future. No one will be interested in immitating anything from the US then.
Then again, whatever the differences between the US and Colombia, I really can't see Colombians throwing the odd word or two of Mandarin into their daily conversation. But who knows, anything is possible...

elmo,

I hate regionalism and unfortunately, you suffer from it!

A Colombia without 'cachacos' wouldn't be Colombia!

Let's see: no Fernando Botero, no Juanes, no Juan Pablo Montoya, no Camilo Villegas, no Antonio Nariño or Francisco Santander, no Alvaro Uribe, no Manual Elkin Patarroyo, no coffee, no aguardiente, no bambuco, no joropo, no Feria de las Flores, no Feria de Manizales, no Carnaval de Blancos y Negros, no Alvaro Mutis, no Jorge Isaacs, no Laura Restrepo no Jorge Franco, (all great writers BTW), no Jaime Garzon (RIP), no Jose Asuncion Silva (Colombia's greatest poet), no Freddy Rincon no, Faustino Asprilla, no Oscar Cordoba, no Willington Ortiz, no Rene Higuita, or Victor Hugo Aristizabal. No Copa Libertadores for Colombia (since only 'cachaco' teams have won it). No Betty la Fea, no Pedro el Escamoso, no Catalina Sandino Moreno or John Leguizamo, no Aterciopelados, no Claudia Placios, no Natalia Paris, no Amparo Grisales, no Paola Andrea Betancur, no Lina Marulanda, no Adriana Arboleda, etc..... heck, the list is so long, I could be here all day.

Dude, I think you still have a lot to learn about Colombia!

Simon,

You're right, regionalism is pointless and subjective. But in the spirit of a friendly argument and if you use international recognition as a yardstick:

Pibe outweighs all the footballers you mentioned, Shakira and Joe Arroyo outweigh all the cachaco singers and your list of models and actors combined can't hold a candle to Sofia Vergara. And if Aracataca is considered "Costeño" (I have no idea), Garcia Marquez surpasses all the men and women of letters.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Leguizamo - He doesn't count. He's half-Colombian and he left for the U.S. when he was four.

elmodefoque says on Jun 28, 2007, 15:58:

Just returned from feeding the pigeons. Again I sat and ponder and you know what, my cachaco brothers do have had a point; they have indeed contributed plenty to make Colombia what it is right now.
I discussed this with a couple hard core costenos and they pointed out that outside of Botero and maybe a handful of yahoos knowing from Montoya, that’s it! All the others don’t count.
These guys are so damn corroncho they really think the only opinion that matters is that of Americans
Yes, I‘m guilty of being too damn proud but these guys are way out there. They also pointed out that Shakira, Renteria, Gabo, Vergara are the only ones well known by the american media
. Of course we can’t dare to compare ourselves to the talent that Mexico and Puerto Rico has put out there..
Yet another thing, they claimed the little old Barranquilla alone has put more Colombians in the worlds pubic eye than Bogotá, Medellin, Cali, Pereira, Pasto, Bucaramanga, Armenia, etc.al combined.

I'll get there, when I get there!

Tinto,

Catalinda Sandino Moreno has been nominated for an OSCAR, and in her movie debut nonetheless. I love Sofia, but she'll be nominated when pigs fly! And as a model, she's no Natalia Paris!

I wouldn't say Shakira outweighs Juanes, Juanes only has 12 GRAMMYS! And he actually sings Colombian music, and was named one the the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME Magazine, whereas Shakira has opted for singing in english.

And why wouldn't leguizamo count? Liek it or not, he was born in Colombia, and has just finished filming a movie there, 'Love in the Times of Cholera'.

Ah, and last but not least, you're not Colombian, so butt out!

I met a 3 or 4 displaced costenos in Villavo my last day there. My only regret is that I hadn't met them earlier and had more time to hang out with them. They were the good players on the Villavo softball team. One was actually a pro-player in the US back in '79 or so for the Twins. Anyway, they immediately made me feel comfortable and welcome, and defined the phrase, "life of the party."

I don't know if that is a fact, but assuming it is (about Pablo wanting to pay off the Colombian debt), I can think of several rational reasons why the government would refuse the offer.

He was a murdering scum-bag. He was no different than somebody like Al Capone. Except even richer. Senor Escobar offering to pay the Colombian debt was an arrogant gesture.

He did have a great futbal team.

Rubito - Re Pablo, that may be one big myth. First, I wouldn't trust Forbes "richest person" estimates. They are sometimes way off, even with people in legitimate businesses. Second, Pablo knew that if Colombia accepted his offer, they'd be a pariah state for a long time to come. Barring any harder evidence, it will go down as a bluff he knew he wouldn't be called on.

All jesting aside, I gotta tell you, though I’m proud of all Colombians I’m bit disappointed with cachacos and their over zealous love for all that is foreign.
I don’t like anyone in Colombia to know I live in the USA but I was forced to speak English to my young brother in-laws in public in Medellin while in barranquilla we only spoke corroncho . I don’t mine English in private but not out in the middle of a bar or restaurant.
Again I play this video because it gives me happy goose bumps. I get great pleasure in seeing our costeño youth continuing our music and costumes. It gives me great joy NOT to see them parading around half naked, exhibiting themselves in the parquet Lleras, Zona Rosa’s, Frogg Leggs of Colombia.

Dear Mr.Modefoque,
You are right. Since arriving in canada my wife (Turbaquera) has made many new friends who are from colombia; calenas, paisas, cachacas and costenas. You can always see the difference at the cachaca and paisa partys everyone sits respectfully and talks nice and polite and very reserved, lots of usted. The costena (Calenas a little bit too) party is a 1000 times different, the swearing, drinking and laughing is a lot more intense and my wife admits it's because the costenos are more vulgar.
I like it and earlier someone wrote here that cartagena doesn't have a middle class, that's not true there's a huge middle class it's just that middle class costenos don't put on airs like those from the interior. The doctor that fixed my rash in cartagena talks and acts just like the vendor on the boca grande beach.
Viva la costa!!!!
Remember, we're all in this together.

Many in Colombias refer to costenos as uneducated, loud, backward modefoques only because most of our youth have not embrace “modern times’ Techno music, heavy metal etc. why?
3 years ago my nephew worked as a bouncer for a joint called “tropical cocktail” in Barranquilla. They only played techno chit and served neon colored drinks.
Though most middle class barranquilleros have a LOT more money than other middle class Colombians, the place closed down in less than 6 months. Most barranquilleros prefer their music, no matter what class.
He was sent to the”tropical cocktail” in Bogotá where this place is a big hit. He could not stand to hear that music and the cold and rain got him sick; he quit and returns to curramba to drive a cab.
