Colombia will launch sattelites

Colombia plans to launch 2 sattelites of its own in a few years, one of them to scan for coke plantations. http://www.eltiempo.com/colombia/politica/2008-09-21/2-satelites-colom...

My first thought was something in the line of....from semisubs to satellites...one little step in technology a huge leap for the mankind....

I think they will pay someone to launch the sats. I have not seen a launching pad for rockets in Colombia, only for visa hunting Colombiana's...http://agencyscams.com/

I always get a kick out of these articles. We can't even build a high rise in Cartegena without having to tear it down for fear of the wind blowing it over but oh yea we are gonna build a rocket and launch a Colombian satalite.

This will be yet another failed attempt to try and tackle drug production/cultivation in Colombia.

Colombia already launched a satelite not too long ago "libertad 1" it was a test satelite which opened the door for more advanced satelites

It's about freakign time! Now I just hope the anti-Uribistas, who love to complain about anything that will bring about progress to Colombia, don't try to stop this!

The first one was a tiny 5-inch cube but I believe it's still up there and functioning, so it sounds like a success.

Yeah, that one was designed by university students I believe.

tinto as i said the first one was a test satelite, off course it was small but it did sent enough information and it was a sucess, but by the way you say tiny 5 inch blablabla it seems like you hate the fact that Colombia is trying to go forward with new technologies like this one

Check out the CubeSat web pages by Boeing and a couple of California universities. They use the word tiny, too. It's not derogatory -- it's amazing that miniaturization has come this far and the low launch cost of these things opens up space to many more countries. That's all good, especially if it gets more people interested in science.

good to know you didnt meant it in a derogatory way

I wish Colombia would stop playing this "we don't want the drug trade" game. Does anyone think for a second that the political powers here and the wealthy class are not kneck deep in the drug trade? It is billions of dollars after all. So where are these billions of dollars? Do we have some dirty narco standing in the jungle spending billions of dollars? Por favor...

What you have is the rich getting richer and if anyone beleives this satalite will be used for drug interdiction? I got a bridge to sell them. You can not even make a phone call here without wandering who else is on the line with you and that is technology that came here to fight the supposed "war on drugs". So do we really need a satalite that can look down and see us leaving our house?

Colombia can begin it's exploration right here by exploring people who have no homes, no food and no future. Do something about that and then go play in space. Colombia has a responsibility to its people first and this does not serve the Colombian people.

So it is more of the same, the poor here get their help from people outside Colombia while the rich like to pretend they are in the space race. Mierda.

Celebrate it if you want but you will not find me joining in.

rowdyyatesinbogota has a point.

But if the satellite helps win the war against the FARC, it could be money well spent.

I didn't look at the articles too much... maybe they can offset some of the cost by getting some well meaning gringos to contribute for the satellites to be used in the fight against deforestation.

que nota!

"fight against deforestation"

AMEN! All this 'war on drugs' and 'war on terrorism' rhetoric and the biggest killer is when the lungs of the planet are dead and we have no air to breathe, will drugs or terrorism matter then? NO!

WAR AGAINST DEFORESTATION! A worthy war indeed...

my first thought was........ok we got money for satelites but none for social and educational institucions in rural areas of colombia. we can invest in satelites but not on giving our campesinos different options rather then joining fuckin terrorist groups and/or growing illegal drugs.

come on!!!!!!!!!

so true tomtom33, same thing happened when they were bringing the color tv to Colombia, people was oposing to it, is not that me why Colombia is a 3rd world country? maybe because we always opose to any kind of advance in any field? we invest ina airport "hey why we dont use that money on this" we invest ona a bridge "hey we should have invested that money on that" now people is oposing to bring HDTV to Colombia too, i mean seriously we will never leave the 3rd world until we change that stupid mentaly

want proof of that? the actual Bogota's major want to create a metro and people is opsing it because its too expensive blablabla, thats what i call 3rd world mentality

turnmeon says on Sep 22, 2008, 23:23:

that proves once again that we will never be satisfied by anything, in Colombia some people want free house, free food, free everything, now i ask myself in which 1st world country its citizens get everything for free? ask my US friends how hard they have to work for what they have
