Does anyone know if they are going to show the Colombia vs USA friendly international soccer match on tv?

Mexico's national team plays Argentina tonight so guess which game Telemundo will be broadcasting? Like I said before, I think it's shameful that Telemundo, a US network, would opt to show that game instead of the game in which the home country (USA) will play.

ColX Amigo... newsflash, the home team is actually Mexico, wouldn't you agree? Think about it.

ColombianoX says on Mar 9, 2005, 17:18:

No, I don't agree. Telemundo is based out of the USA, not Mexico.

I am not a big futbol fan but it would be interesting to watch. I agree that while technically the USA should be the 'home' team for Telemundo if it is actually based in the USA, the fact is that such a huge percentage of the viewers are Mexican that Mexico probably is the 'home' team. Do you think a Mexican would rather watch the Mexican national team or the US?

I believe Telemundo is owned by NBC.

Most futbol fans would prefer to watch Argentina play than either Colombia or the USA. So the decision ist understandable.

santiBOG says on Mar 10, 2005, 05:29:

The Decision is understandable Mexicans are the biggest Latin American population in the US. As a whole they are probably bigger that the entire gringo soccer fan base (which probably does NOT watch Telemundo anyway). Telemundo is a business and thay have to cater to their Mexican audience. They are not in any way obligated to broadcast the 'home team' games. Who the hell would want to watch the US team anyway??? I love soccer and the Colombian Nat'l Team but both games are friendly; I won't mind watching Arg vs Mex... both teams are excellent.

So come on ColX, Telemundo's decision is not 'shameful'... let's not be overly fanatic.

santiBOG, I am one of the few gringos that watch Telemundo..on occasion. I watch it sometimes to help me with my spanish. Those telenovelas have some of the hottest women on TV.

fzrdan I myself can't get enough of the women from Pasion de Gavilanes or te Voy a Enseñar a Querer.

It's good that you're watching to improve your Spanish... it works. Tip: Avoid learning Mexican and Venezuelan accents at all costs.

"They are not in any way obligated to broadcast the 'home team' games. Who the hell would want to watch the US team anyway???"

Of course they are not obligated to broadcast the 'home team', but I think they should do so out of respect for the nation that gives them a living!

"Who the hell would want to watch the US team anyway???"

I do! And I'm certain there are hundreds of thousands of people in this country who want to watch the US team play. Ever hear of 'Uncle Sam's Army', the official US national team fan club?

"I won't mind watching Arg vs Mex... both teams are excellent."

Yes, Argentina is excellent.... but Mexico??

Respect "I think they should do so out of respect for the nation that gives them a living!"

Respect? Surely you must be kidding! Respect means standing up when the national anthem plays. Choosing to broadcast a Mexican game instead of a US game has nothing to do with respect or lack thereof. Telemundo has every right to choose whatever they want... it's a corporation, not a government-owned entity, they can do whatever is better for their ratings. We are NOT in Cuba.

And Mexico has a good team. You're not exactly a football scholar, are you?

Mexico has a very good team, I don't understand why anyone would think otherwise. They have been playing football longer than any country in Latin America I believe. They are a team that plays a game closer to European football than most Latin American teams. I don't include Argentina in that equation as they think they are European anyway. ;-)

I don't like teams who play the ball in the midfield all day with brilliant ball control but no attack, unless the team happens to be the opposition. ja ja

Mexico in football = 0 World Cups (after hosting two!) + 0 Copa Americas + 0 Copa Libertadores.

santiBOG says on Mar 12, 2005, 08:30:

ColX... fyi The Copa Libertadores is theoretically a SOUTH American club championship. Conmebol (the entity that regulates South American football) started inviting the Mexican clubs because of their very competitive level. This started happening relatively recently and it's just a matter of time before a Mexican club wins the Copa Libertadores. Trust me on that one.

The Copa America is a similar story. Theoretically it is a SOUTH American national team championship. Even though Mexico is not part of Conmebol, they get invited to the tournament every time because they are one of the main football powers in the American continent. They bring up the overall competition level in the tournament. We want them there every time because they are a world-class football team. It's a matter of time before they win the cup. You probably don't know this but they were a finalist in 2001.

So, to answer your comment... true they have not won either tournament yet. But the fact that they get invited without being part of Conmebol speaks for itself. Lastly, I would like you to visit the current FIFA World rankings page (Mexico is #6 in the world).

Fifa

I rest my case.

Jajaja, tan chistoso! Of course I know, just like I know it was Colombia who kicked their ass in the final.

santiBOG, I live in California so I hear Mexicans speaking almost daily but my Spanish is not very good so it is not easy to pick up different accents (well, it is easy for me to spot a gringo accent like mine!). Are the actors on the telenovelas mostly Mexican or from other countries? I have no idea.

santiBOG says on Mar 12, 2005, 14:55:

Actually, on Telemundo the actors' national origins are somewhat more diverse than on Univision, where it's Mex-o-rama (and Venezuela).

I wouldn't call a 1-0 score kicking their ass. It was a tight match that could have gone either way.
