Colombia vs Thailand

Hello everyone!

Im in my late twenties and im european.. Now.. My friends have both moved to Thailand and they love it!
I`ve been to Thailand a couple of times and i to love it... As for living there i dont know... The differences in western culture and thai culture is a bit of a shock! And also i dont really care that much for thai girls.. although some are beautiful.(I like curves! :)

Im sick and tired of living in my homecountry (denmark) and i have yet to explore south america. The obvious place to visit is Brasil. But i have been wondering about going to Colombia intead. Since im still relatively young i will use my vecations the next few years to explore different countries. I am considering moving to Thailand but i have desided to check out south america before i make up my mind. I work shifts so i can live where i want. The idea is to work in denmark half the time and to live abroad half the time.

My question is this: *It may be hard (or plain stupid) to compare such different countries like Thailand and Colombia, but i`ll ask anyway. Have any of you guys/girls been to Thailand as well and what do you think about Colombia versus Thailand? Quality of life, living costs, safety, girls and so on.

Ronny I'm actually preparing for my second trip to Thailand.
I'll be going to Koh Samui which is the same place I was a couple of years ago. I don't know what part(s) of Thailand you are familiar with but it's a healthy decision to explore South America before you set up sticks.
You could say what it is about Thailand that you like or what you are looking for in a place to settle. If it's nice beaches you are after I think maybe Thailand has the edge. You say that the difference between western and eastern culture is a bit of a shock....I think you won't be so shocked in Colombia (or SA in general) as they seem to be pretty well influenced by the west...majestic Wats are substited by Catholic cathedrals and churches....no need to take your shoes off when entering homes/establishments.
If you said you like curves (in women) well let's just say you won't be dissapointed.
I'd say quality of life in Colombia is very good...just have a healthy regard for personal security and enjoy Colombia through its peoples....if you ever visit you will find the great majority very welcoming and helpful. I haven't lived in Thailand my stay has been no further than 2 weeks but I was hugely impressed in the short time I spent there, I very much look forward to going back and the thought of staying for a longer period of time has crossed my mind, the only drawback to Thailand is the huge influx of western tourists which you will not see as much in Colombia and before you ask blonde and blue/green eyed does not equal gringo.
The living costs in Colombia I would imagine are pretty similar to those in Thailand...but that depends on how you were living in Thailand.
Anyways...hope you do get to travel to Colombia and see how truly beautiful it is....but it would really help you to actually know a Colombian that could make your holiday easier as they would be able to let you know which areas are fine and which ones you are better aff avoiding.

sum info on colombia I've never been to thailand, but i did used to live in colombia and from what i have learned of thailand's culture is that it is dramatically different than that of european culture. colombian culture is a modern culture which may resemble some european culture....all you need to worry about in colombia are the palces that you go to. there are prety safe places like bucaramanga thats where i used to live...its pretty cool and modern. you should never go to places where there is too much poverty. try to remain in the middle class area or if you can afford in the high class. but bucaramanga is mostly middle and high class so you may want to check that city out. as for the colombian girls...well let me tell you they are some of the best looking girls in the world, plus we have european ancestry so they may resemble like european girls. there are all types of girls, every color and every flavor lol. well thats all id have to say about colombia. its a very beautiful country and you should definately check it out.

That's interesting, Bucaramanga is some kind of Oasis city in Colombia where there is no - or almost no - lower class???

COLOMBIA let me tell you something, for myself I'm German and I lived the past 16 years all over the world incl. Thailand, Phillipine, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Italy, Russia, USA, Europe, South and cental America and so on, I really liked most of the places but when I came 3 years ago the firste time to Colombia I know right away where I belong to and I decide to stay,

you have security issues all over the world even in Denmark or Germany, just watch out with what kind of people you are hanging out or what places you go.

so for me is Medellin the perfect and best place to live.

ciao
Tom

Colombia, definetly Hey man, I am Colombian but lived in many places in the world including Japan, Germany the US, central and south America..well I went to Tailand for about a week, what can i tell you... i really liked it, i thought it was full of culture and a big caothic cosmopolitan city....living there...mmmm I don´t think so. As you said the cultural differences are big and the traffic, all the noise..the caothic factor that i was talking about is a big withdraw to live there, besides, they will always know you are a Foreign.
For Colombia...well, you have it all here, anything you want, any climate, any food, all sorts of entertainment, beaches, ecoturism, cosmopolitan cities, deserts, jungle....All. I would say however that the best part is the people, colombians are just naturaly warm very polite and they will try their best to make you feel as welcome as possible. As any other part of the world, you have to be careful who you hang out with and where you go, Bogota, Cali, Medellin, Bucaramanga, Cartagena and even smaller cities will feel very modern, with tons of choices for restaurants, clubs, culture...etc.
I hope that helps.

Take care.

Thanx for the tips!! For me the most important things are prices, friendly people, girls especially :) and warm climate. I suspect i will like colombian food better than thai food also. The thing is, as THEY say, when you first have asia in your blood its real easy to get hooked! I think thats true!! :)

Im getting interested...very interested (excuse my english). Ive heard good things about Costa Rica and Dom.Rep.to. But Colombia sure sounds interesting! I`ll probably have some questions in the future and i hope you can help me then to! Thanx a lot for the answers! much appriciated!
